I agree with the 'trade off'. No genuine patient in need of medical attention should suffer because of the ones taking advantage of the free way for ambulances.

This 'free'way is very much abused near the tolls on highways - switch on the siren a few hundred mtrs before the toll gate, get a quick and free pass, and once you pass, switch the siren off and go peacefully/normally until the next toll.

There was an incident in Bangalore a few years back where an ambulance would traverse the same route at the same time of the day, everyday, with blaring sirens and utmost urgency. Police got suspicious, followed the dude and found that he was 'misusing' the privilege just to meet his girlfriend on time (and probably brag about it later)

Apart from leaving ambulances for more emergency purposes, it would also led to less gossip. The moment an ambulance enters the society residents and other workers start hovering around...

All that is needed in a taxi is space to fit a stretcher or a wheelchair. Which is why it is difficult to take them in a car. No need of any other equipment or responders.

On topic: The time "wasted" in giving way for an ambulance is a few seconds. It takes a lot more effort to analyse where the Ambulance is in an actual emergency or not. So I just give way.
