NHAI identifies 325 accident prone spots across India!

Interestingly, as per NHAI, 90% accidents happen at 325 points in the country, which they have identified as "black spots".

I saw this article in Maharashtra Times
http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.c...w/17039704.cms

Detailed information is available on:

http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelease.aspx?relid=87693

http://morth.nic.in/index2.asp?slid=...kid=504&lang=1

Remains to be seen what exactly they will do at these spots.

This does not seem to cover expressways.

Re: NHAI Identifies 325 accident prone spots over the country

How did each State end up having exactly 25 Black spots each? Looks more like an artificially made up figure. Or is it a figure of the number of Black spots to be taken up by NHAI for road improvement?

The figure seems to be made up. Here in Assam, people die of road accidents literally every day. I read somewhere few months back that Assam has the highest number of road casualties every year and this list of 13 states doesn't even mention Assam.

The state departments must have been told to come up with around 25 spots and hence the figure. Shows how serious they are in preventing accidents.

Re: NHAI identifies 325 accident prone spots across India!

There are many other states missing in this list, which are having high accident rate.
However, I feel this is good data collection, atleast authority will think something to improve the infrastructure at these spots. These days we are hearing a lot of accidents on road of prominent personalities. It may be case of driver error or judgement in most of the cases.

Re: NHAI identifies 325 accident prone spots across India!

After going through the list and the reasons for accidents, I feel that this is purely based on the feedback received from the states and not based on any study done by the NHAI.

I was going through the blind spots in WB on NH6 and NH2 and in most cases the reason has been shown as rash driving by the drivers. They have even suggested installing speed breakers as a remedy.

@Rituraj : One reason why Assam is not figuring in the list is that the state might not have submitted the report. Many more states are also missing from the list.

It must be the top 25 in each state. That may not necessarily mean the top 325 in the country.

Surprising!! How did Goa miss out? Here the fatalities due to accident is soon going to be 1 per day, that too with Goa being one of the smallest states..!!

Highly doubt the authenticity of this information.

If that were true, then this is farcical. The study is their responsibility to conduct and if it is incomplete in some states, then the incomplete report shouldn't be published at all. Its like saying "Since we do not have all the information, please make do with whatever we have and treat it as complete". Large scope for misinterpretation, IMHO.

As per the following link, Kerala has the highest black spot, Scary.. Such a tiny state has the highest spots. Ok, now we have the data, hope the govt. doing something about it.

Re: NHAI identifies 325 accident prone spots across India!

There was an article in Chennai news paper few weeks back about identifying the black spots in highways. They even mentioned some spots. Some reasons given were Faulty Road Engineering , Poorly Lit , etc. They even made plans for short term and permanent correction of these spots. I think these activities must be related together.

Unfortunately I am not able to obtain the news article. Anyone from Chennai remember this article ?

Re: NHAI identifies 325 accident prone spots across India!

325 spots? ok, then maybe the Mumbai Pune expressway is one giant spot?
In any case, we are left to our own devices so its better that we continue to expect that pothole around the corner, someone running across the road, heavy vehicles/ loaded tractors without tail lamps or indicators, overtaking from the left lane, and the other usual suspects.
If they have identified these spots, I would have to ask how were these spots designed/ approved in the first place? And now that they have been identified, how these would be fixed? By building a flyover?
