Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

I'm in office today and a colleague just walked in my cabin, absolutely freaked out and worried. Said he is in deep trouble (mentioned personal trouble) and needs my help.

He then proceeded to state that he just got a phone call from FedEx (Number +91-73980 90454) and a parcel has been confiscated with 5 passports and drugs with his details, being shipped from Mumbai to Dubai. The lady then transferred the call to custom police, who even convinced him to download Skype post confirmation of his job, living standard etc.

What saved him is:
1. He did not want to discuss all this at office. He said he'll add the police officer to Skype at home
2. Luckily, he discussed his conundrum.

I smiled and showed him zillions of articles online. At first, he was apprehensive but then when I read out a few articles which mirrored his situation, he breathed a sigh of relief.

He is now going to Sarjapur police station to inform them.

PS: He asked one interesting question. What is the standard SOP by police, in case ever such a thing happens. Do they ever Skype? I dismissed that flatly. But do the police actually do video calls over Skype, Whatsapp, etc.?

SOPs per se don't exist in practice. In theory, there could be SOPs for different states and different districts. At most, a person could be called to the police station or an office.
A video call or a whatsapp call is a red flag. They try to intimidate the innocent in the name of police. Even if a constable calls over say whatsapp, he'd never ask to join Skype or a platform of his choice.
Common sense should prevail and the first thing should always be to not be afraid and discuss with friends, family or colleagues first. Like he did in this case. You saved him a lot of time, tension and the potential & inevitable fraud.

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

The mobile operators will be told by the Department of Telecommunications to block 18 lakh mobile phones in the near future, which are being used for committing frauds and cybercrimes, The Department of Telecom has already ordered blocking of 28,220 phones on 09.05.24, of fraudsters and cyber criminals.

This is a good beginning and hopefully tracking of more and more fraudsters and cyber criminals including registering of FIR's against them as a deterrence.

If the Department of Telecom also collaborates with Apps such as Truecaller which has details and user ids of lakhs of blocked numbers as SPAM, they could zero upon many, many more such fraudsters and cyber criminals.

These types of scams are becoming increasingly common. This week alone, I have received two such calls from the number +918199709947

The calls feature a recorded message claiming that a FedEx parcel has been returned and instructing the recipient to press 1 to proceed. The message is so professionally crafted that someone unfamiliar with these scams could easily be deceived.

I have instructed my family members to hang up immediately if they receive such calls. Since my brother and I handle all online orders in our household, no one else should be concerned about any parcels.

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

A new Term Policy Scam. Long post alert.

I got a call from Medical Insurance Call Center. As soon as I heard this term, it rang me scams all the way. Had some time, so I proceeded with the conversation. I ensured that, I don't utter a word in English and the entire conversation to be in the local lingo and no smart words and act naive.

Tele Caller: Sir, you had a loan during 2018 and there was an insurance attached to that loan. Now the insurance amount is matured to 2 lakhs, and I can claim that amount
Me: What loan was that?
Tele Caller: It's the loan you took from the bank.
Me : OK.
Me : What should I do to get that amount?
Tele Caller: With lot of enthusiasm, Sir, you are very lucky for this opportunity, and you have got 2 Lakhs. If you don't claim it now, the company will freeze that amount and take it back.
Me:Tell me what should I do before it goes away
Tele Caller: I will guide you to a temporary term policy. As soon as it is applied you will get that amount
Me: I have no idea about Policy, gilacy and all. I will give it to my brother who has some idea.
My friend: What is that policy and what is with these two lakhs. ( Asked him to budge to his questions and reply soft)
Tele Caller: Explained the same to my friend
Friend: I know a person, working in that Policy company and can I get it done through him
Tele Caller: He did not have answer and said his manager will call
Manager: Calls me back and says it has to happen through them only for that 2 Lakhs and he is arranging a call from the Policy company for my details to be provided.
Policy Caller: Sir are you OK with getting the Life Time Term Insurance policy
Me: I said its only temporary policy for 30 days until I get that 2 Lakhs
Policy Caller: It doesn't work that way and I need to pay a minimum of 20K per annum for this policy and for 10 years.
Me: No need of payment. I'm getting two lakhs. Ask the Medical Insurance Tele caller.
Policy Caller- Said OK and cut the call.
Tele Caller: Sir, did you talk to the policy team?
Me: She is asking me to pay 20 K and she is trying to cheat
Tele Caller: No Sir, she is not. You can pay that nominal amount as you are getting 2 Lakhs
Me: OK. Why don't you give that 20K from those 2 lakhs to the policy team and the rest 1.8 lakhs to me.
Tele Caller: He is aghast and says Sir, it doesn't happen that way
Me: I got a jackpot and I'm ok to give that 20 K from that money. You can take 5K also for reaching out to me. Send me 1.75 Lakhs in cheque
Tele Caller: Sir, Both Policy and Jackpot Money is on us. I think, you found us and the purpose. Thanks for wasting our time.
Me: I blocked the number and marked it spam in true caller.

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

Saw a post on LinkedIn about an attempt to cheat. The comments under that post, too, are informative.

Summary:
[1] A makes a UPI transfer of Rs 10,000 to a stranger B, immediately informs B that the transfer was mistakenly done and requests B to transfer the amount back.
[2] B, in good faith, transfers Rs 10,000 to A.
[3] A then proceeds to raise a dispute with the bank on the original transaction. If the bank reverses that transaction, A gains Rs 10,000 at B's cost.

Is this a new scam targeting iPhone users? It’s a iMessage and specifically asks to use Safari to open the link.

Seems likely that it is targeted to iOS users but my question is how do they have a iMessage number list?

I guess for now they are just targeting DBHPians , one more incident posted here.

I opened the link and they are after your card details. For resending the package they are charging a fee.

If A can raise a dispute request for reversal then so can B raise a similar dispute request for reversal of funds transferred by him/her. What's am I missing here? Also do we even have such an option to get UPI transactions reversed? I haven't seen such an option anywhere yet or at-least haven't heard of anyone getting UPI funds reversed by disputing the transaction.

Anyone can put funds into your account. But no one, even the bank, can take the funds out of your account without your approval.

The scam I have heard is that step (1) above is never done but a message will be sent to B that makes B believe that 10000 has been credited to his bank. This message is usually a very carefully crafted message that mimics the message from the bank.
This scam relies on the fact that B never actually checks his/her bank account but relies on the sms to assume that the money has come in.

Re: Fake / Fraud / Scam Calls

I have received such scam calls too. Recently, I got a call saying they were from HDFC Life Insurance, and without my knowledge, the agent took my signature to withdraw 10 percent from my insurance as a commission. And they said, This call is to confirm if I have signed it knowingly or unknowingly. If it is without my knowledge, I can still stop paying the commission by calling the manager, and they provided a number to call immediately. It all seemed like a scam to me.
