You can receive AM stations all over India.
Especially at night, shouldn't be any problem.

AM broadcasting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Medium wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I remember listening to Radio Ceylon etc being broadcast in totally opposite extreme of our coutnry.

I guess tge problem with modern radios is that they are simply not built to for AM/MW transmission.
They are built for FM and only that they do it fine.

Compare it to an old Philips "transistor" radio.
Still would pick-up weak signals from lands far away.

(Shortwave signals can be caught from across the globe)

Medium waves propogate along the ground and get attenuated within a hundred or so kilometers depending on the broadcast power. Hence you would not get an adequate signal beyond that range even if you have a medium wave radio. They are mainly intended for local coverage.
