Hmmm logically it would be good to apply for a new passport, as the signature, address change and spouse details would be covered without any issues.

The problem is the existing passport is valid and even Im not sure whether one is supposed to then apply for renewal or fresh passport. Seriously an agents advise is needed or any member who faced a similar situation can come up and share their experience.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

For minor passports, does a new registration have to be made or is it possible from the parents login?

Renewal or fresh, both are one and the same as far as the process is concerned. If the passport is valid beyond one year, you can apply for renewal under "Change of appearance" category. Don't worry - there will be no issues.

I guess one login can have three active applications at any given time. If this is not a limitation for you, kid's application can be submitted via parent's login.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

Thanks Skumare.

Another quick question was is it necessary to have the name of the baby on the birth certificate? I do not have the name as it was decided quite late. I heard we can give a declaration on plain paper. Anyone had a similar experience?

+1 racer_m.

Visa applications are denied if you hold a passport having more than 10 years validity and if your passport is handwritten one.All embassies/Consulates insist on machine readable passports.

My aunt could not apply for Schengen visa as her passport had 20 year validity and it was handwritten. She was made to apply for a fresh passport.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

So what is the best time for me to try booking the appointment these days. For the last two days I'm trying it in the morning and each time it says that Maximum number of appointments have exceeded for the day.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

Ok so I managed to get the appointment for my wife however I wanted to clarify something.

I have a passport where spouse name is not added and now I've got the appointment for my wife's passport for 11th July.

Now would I be getting my name added in her passport and then once I receive her passport would I need to get her name added in mine or can I start the process of getting her name added simultaneously.

Also, what is the advantage of getting the spouse name added in one's passport?

When I applied for mine the appointments used to open at 6pm and get exhausted by 6.10 or so.

You dont have to do both together. If your wife's name is endorsed in your passport then I think your passport is a valid address proof for her - thats one advantage.

1. My wife's passport application is for a fresh passport. I have already mentioned my name in the spouse name section so will her passport already have my name as spouse?
2. Do I need to again take online appointment to get spouse name added for my existing passport or I can just walk in with the marriage certificate etc. and get it added in their office?

Yes, your name will be added in her passport and no proof required for the same. You need to take an appointment to get your spouse name added in your passport.

Online appointment is mandatory for everything now; Addition or deletion of spouse name, change of address, change of ECNR etc.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

Thanks guys. I've managed to land up back to back slots for my wife's fresh passport as well as spouse name addition on my passport. I just selected a different PSK in Delhi (ITO one against the Bikaji that I was trying get earlier) and got the appointment easily.

My passport is to expire in 2016 so not sure whether it was wise to spend 1500 just to get the spouse name added till then as I can't figure out any advantage of it on the net.

Re: Passport Renewal Procedure

Guys,
I received the passport last week. There seem to be several new features/changes in the passport. Till today I was of the opinion they have screwed up with my passport; even pm-ed @tsk1979 to know more about his recent experience.

Passport Renewal Procedure-12thpassport_1424828e.jpg

Some more changes that are not seen in the above image
- Earlier setup of front two & last two pages of the passport moved one page inside. So the key details are now one page inside.
- Bar-code added on the last page

Refer to the below article

Quote:
“No need to surrender existing passports to get the new ones”

Three hundred and eight passports, with additional security features, were dispatched on Thursday, marking the launch of a new variant of passport.

C. Senthil Pandian, Regional Passport Office (RPO), Chennai, said that since Wednesday morning, officials in the Chennai RPO were coordinating with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials in New Delhi and Tata Consultancy Services professionals to make changes in the software and alignment procedures to synchronise the printers at the RPO office, Chennai.

Mr. Pandian said that only six new passports could be printed on Wednesday as only one printer at the Chennai RPO got synchronised with the MEA office, New Delhi. On Thursday, three more printers were synchronised with the MEA, which facilitated the printing and dispatch of 380 passports. Two more printers had to be synchronised.

Mr Pandian said that if all the six printers got synchronised, the RPO Chennai would be able to print and dispatch 1,800 passports a day.

New security features

Personal particulars of the passport holder, hitherto printed on the inner cover page, would be printed on the second page of the document. This had been done to prevent criminals from producing fake passports. Under the existing method, there is scope for smudging when the lamination is done.

Another added security feature in the new type of passport is the ghost picture of the holder, which will be found on the right side of the second page.

Similarly, the details of the holder, now printed on the last page, would be taken to page 35. The signature and seal of the passport issuing authority would be printed on front overleaf page instead of page one.

There is no need for the passport holders to surrender their existing passports and obtain fresh ones from the RPO Chennai office. Such passports are valid till their expiry date, Mr. Pandian added.

You can apply for a renewal before 1 year of expiry

Renewal of passport doesn't have any (expiry) time limit if you have any valid reasons for change in the passport details (I just renewed my passport that was due to expire in 2020).

As correctly pointed out by Waseem, re-issue of an soon-to-expire passport has a 1 year time period condition.
