Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Have any one of you tried Thimmappa Hotel(fondly called Thimmappa Palace) on the Malpe Beach road close to Karavali Junction? I have not tried this place, but I have heard good things about this place. This place is quite famous for fish curry meals. Caution: Ambiance is deceptive

One restaurant I regularly used to visit in the last decade was Dollops in Manipal. I don't know if it's still there. Tiled roof and unplastered walls was the theme of the restaurant. Quite a cosy place coupled with great food.

There are a few new ones that have come up and are pretty decent.
1. Hotel Sai Palace in KSR Road opposite City Center Mall.
2. Chutney in MG Road - Deepa Comforts building
3. Ideal Cafe in GT Road opposite Sharavu Temple also has a decent menu and have recently introduced Veg Biryani. You can also enjoy the ice creams post your meal.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

I am looking for suggestions for good eateries in Kundapur but found little info in the recent posts. Can anyone share some options, preferably non-veg (or exceptional veg ones)?

Also any exceptional breakfast/lunch/dinner options which one shouldn't miss, on the BLR-Hassan-Belur-Agumbe route and Thirthahalli-Tarikere-Hiriyur-BLR route?

I was a fan of Parijatha in Kundapura. But its no longer the same.
There are quite a few good ones but mostly old ones listed earlier. Among new ones below are good:
1. Chutneys
2. Ideal Cafe
3. Udupi cafe in KS Rao road.
4. BMS(Ballal group)

If by any chance you are crossing Bhatkal, try Tamra(Copper in Kannada). This is a newly opened place, and food was very good. For Veg its typical multicuisine affair. They have private rooms which depict local age old architecture. Also I love Vijaya cafe in Padubidri.

Raama hotel & lounge bar (in town), Hoysala Village (Enroute to Belur \ Chikmagalore) is preferred. Family considerations.

When out with boys there is Prabhat Military in BM road (in town), local delicacies - must visit if you are into the military style food.

Some relatively newer breakfast places, nice and clean.

There is Paakashala in Yediyur, which is good for breakfast.
Cafe Udupi Ruchi - Bellur cross, next to coffee day.

The people running Jayanagar`s Shetty`s lunch home (amazing food & has become our La Casa`s spiritual replacement) has recommended that I visit their Kundapura outlet in the same name, I may visit sometime this week hopefully. If you get to it earlier, let us know.

Back in December 2020 I went on a trip with my friends covering the coastal towns in Karnataka and Goa. I had just seen Kripal Amana’s video of Thimappa Fish meals hotel in Youtube and ensured I made a stop there. Let me tell you it is one of the most simple and best seafood I have had in my life. The ambiance is that of a typical mess in the original outlet. Food is served hot and fresh. The taste of the masala and the freshness of the fish is something to be experienced at least once if you really love seafood.

We had the Vanjaram(Sear) fish tawa fry and the owner there recommended us to also try a fish called Disco that is caught of the coast in Udupi. The disco fish was Rava coated and deep fried and it was also outstanding. Apart from this I also had their parotta and Chicken chukka followed by rice with fish saaru which tasted very homely. Best part was four of us ate food that was enough for close to 6 people and yet the bill came to only ₹1200.

Infact we loved the food so much we again stopped for lunch there on our way back from Goa as well. Must visit if you are passing by and saving grace is it located right of the highway. Also fun fact the parking lot is bigger than the hotel.

Yes, during my last visit to Udupi, I noticed that the vehicle parking space has got bigger! I was amazed to see the large no of vehicles parked there. I really don't know how they manage to seat so many customers in the limited space they have. Being a vegetarian, I never had an opportunity to check out.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

During a recent trip to Kundapura and Udupi, we had an afternoon to kill and hence, me and wife drove down to Mangalore for some nice lunch.

Since it was a hot afternoon and we were looking for somewhere comfortable to dine, we went to Gajalee seafood restaurant for lunch. The food was very tasty and we ended up overeating a lot! Special mention to Pomfret masala fry which was one of the best preparations of pomfret that I have ever had in my life. Service was very good, honest feedback from the waiters and they didn't try to oversell. Overall experience was very good. Anyone looking for good seafood and a fine dining experience can try it out. Since it is located on a small hill top, if you go in the evening you can enjoy outdoor seating with a good view of the city.

Next up was Pabba's ice cream parlour. It was very crowded but we managed to get a seat. Tried their Special Gadbad and a Kesar Falooda (I missed those from my Hyderabad days). Both of them were good but nothing extraordinary. Overall experience was slightly underwhelming.

Because of this Mangalore trip, we couldn't try any place in Udupi (regret). We were staying at Blue Waters and had a lot of our meals at the hotel out of sheer laziness and also because the food itself was very good. Tried a variety of dishes like pasta, noodles, fried rice, fish fry, kerala parathas, chapati, mixed veg curry, manchurian, dal takda and their standard breakfast spreads. Each item was very tasty and sumptuous. While checking out, we were surprised to see the final bill which was very low for all the things we ate. Overall, it was an excellent experience at this property for the 3 nights' stay.

Shetty's lunch home, Kundapura is at a walking distance from Blue Waters and we went for dinner. Tried the Chicken ghee roast and loved the item. Tried few other dishes and all of them were good. One thing I didn't like is the waiters trying to push-sell additional items. We were just two people and had a hard time finishing everything. In the end, we could finish only half of the chicken ghee roast and brought back the remaining half, kept in our room fridge, asked the hotel kitchen to warm it up next day and serve it for lunch. Overall, it felt slightly expensive for what it offered even though the food was very good.

I got a suggestion from couple of local folks - Hotel Mahalakshmi. Per them, it is a favorite among locals for fish curry rice and other sea food items. Not very expensive. I didn't get a chance to try it but thought of sharing here in case someone wants to give it a shot.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Mangalore/Udupi/Manipal

Hi folks,

We are planning a Goa to Udupi trip this weekend; the plan is to leave on Sunday early morning.

Could you guys suggest good places enroute for Breakfast & Lunch. I heard that Thimmappa is a good place in Udupi for sea-food. Any other good eateries in an around Udupi.

Also, if you guys could suggest some good places for sight-seeing enroute and also in Udupi would be great!

It is pretty close to my house in Udupi. But I have never tried it since they are not on Swiggy. May be I will drive down and do pickup.

Hotel Karthik Estate on the Highway is excellent for both veg and non-veg food. Lots of local dishes in their veg restaurant. Their Tandoori chicken is excellent, my wife never misses it in every trip.

BTW, the Madhuvan restaurant which used to be the best veg restaurant in manipal, has totally lost it during pandemic. From 1st floor, they have moved to the basement and their cook has obviously changed.

I finally somehow remembered them when I was Udupi this time. Since they are neither on Swiggy nor Zomato, I had to drag my bum down there to get a parcel. It is quite close to my home and they have a huge car park. I ordered rawa fried and tawa fried anjal, rawa fried pompret, pepper fried prawns and prawn ghee roast, and finally lots of fish curry.

Since they cook everything in coconut oil, my mom really liked their food. Usually she only has disdain and disgust for hotel food, but this time she liked everything.

One more Udupi restaurant that only cooks in Coconut oil. Only exceptions are for ghee based items.

Hotel Badagumalige on Court Road

Sorry, the entire video is in Kannada. But they use enough English words to make it understandable.

It is still there as confirmed by my local contacts and the food's greatness is well maintained. Going there next week. Will create a Manipal travelogue.
Man, I miss that place. Going to beach hop all day long and really hard and do long exposure shots of ocean waters. Can't believe that it's been nearly three years.

Oh and to add to the list, some of my favorites from Manipal (will hit them all during this upcoming visit):

1) Eye Of The Tiger: Pricey but great ambience and cocktails. They play good music (rock, 80's pop, sometimes metal like Pantera) when the crowd is thin.

2) Westind Country Club: Very nice place if you like sitting outdoors. Must try the Butter Garlic Chicken/Paneer/Mushroom/Prawn.
Also the Chicken Patiala and Compact Slayer Biryani (don't know if I've named it correctly, comes in a pot with a big boiled egg). Hope Ron Anna is still a part of WCC.

3) Swathi Restaurant and Bar: Not for the faint of heart. Not family oriented. Just the bunch of us loud and noisy TAPMIans and some locals partying with us.
This is where I've spent most of my recreational time singing metal on my tiny bluetooth speaker during the TAPMI years.
Excellent food, excellent staff. Damodar Anna is the MVP there. Have met the owner as well. A very well-read and understanding man. Very nice, helpful and accommodating people general.
Don't forget to give some pets to the mascot Julie. She'll steal your heart and maybe some fallen snacks too while under the table.

4) Paratha Point: Best parathas in Manipal, bar none. Try the Mooli/Gajar hybrid and the Paneer/Aloo hybrid.

5) Snack Shack: Spaghetti and Meatballs? Check. Massive chocolate fruity dessert bowl? Check. Annoying crowd of my age group? Check.

6) Varsha/Vijaya Hotel Underground: Hard to spot, located to the left of Down Town Bar on the Manipal-Alevoor road. Go there if fish and rice are your thing.
Well, not so much for me, despite being a bengali. But it is good fish, I can tell you that.

7) Country Inn: You want to go all out and spend a nice and slow evening away from all the hustle and bustle?
You get it but the cherry on top is the fantastic buffet. It's priced reasonable too, for the ambience you get.

I think I wrote too much. Allow me to visit this thread again after the trip
