Wow, what a blast from the past. Campa Cola was owned by Pure Drinks, which was last owned by Sardar Charanjit Singh. I used to love their Campa lemon flavour. Awesome taste.

Also do remember the other soft drinks from yesteryears,
Thril, Rush, Do IT, Double Cola (the first American cola, still remember their casettes of Bruce Springsteen), Ice cream soda (Dukes, Rogers etc...), Goldspot, Citra, Tango (Anyone remember that?) Rim Zhim,

There was one other drink "Bovonto" - the tag line was "bouncy fun, this one"!

I think the one brand still surviving from that period is Fruitnik.

Bovonto is still there! In fact they are pretty famous in South Tamil Nadu. They are available in 500ml, 2L pet bottles as well.

SOSYO! The tomato soft drink you got at the railway station!

Torino is still available, its been taken over by Coca Cola company, and is very suitable camouflaged as the Fanta, the Torino factory is still active on Kengeri Road in Namma Bengaluru:D

And about those desi colas:uncontrol, here's one pic for you.

What an excellent thread!

I don't remember most of the drinks being spoken about here but I find all this very interesting. I do however remember Gold Spot and Thums Up.

Someone mentioned Pallonji's and Roger's. Both are still available today in Brittania. Pallonji's has a ginger flavoured drink as well but I have never tried it.

You may be surprised to know that Bovonto is also available in Chennai in the super-markets (Nilgiris for sure)...it is one of my fav (soft-)drinks :thumbs up

I think they manufacture this in Virudhunagar.

That's news to me! Bovonto has a very distinctic taste.

Some 10 years back I remember buying it in VGP, Chennai.

I am not sure if any of you remember the name Lime Lite. My grandfather was a recipe maker at what used to be called Roger's, a soft drink factory in Byculla. He used to get crates of Lime Lite delivered to our house when we were kids. Roger's also made the famous Raspberry drink. While Duke's still makes this it is nowhere close to the original recipe that my grandfater had made. And believe it or not, it is missed by people. Also there was Vimto. Vimto is still available in the gulf.

Nice to learn about all these other regional soft drinks. I was surprised to see people still selling those home made drinks where they use those bottles with a glass marble type top. Those bottles gola soda bottles are a collectors item in some places.

Nevgin,

Vimto is still available in the UK as well. You can get the fizzy version and a concentrate which you mix with water to get a non fizzy version.

I am having coke right now and it just started tasting BAKWAAS.
I miss crush and canada dry. :Frustrati
BTW i saw coca cola pet bottles near my place just a few days go.

Well I remember all those & it brought back a lot of memories. However my personal favourite was
CANADA DRY

It was AWSOME to say the least

Nice memories... Local brands in Udupi/Mangalore area were Beeco-joy and Bajal. In the 90s there was also Manipal Commander, older MIT alumni might remember that.:)

And let's not forget Rasna, it didn't come in a bottle, but it was a popular cool drink.

I have been wondering for a while about what happened to Campa Cola. Have they totally shut down their bottling plants (as Pepsi and Coca Cola have sewn up the soft drinks market).

Bah! You brought back memories of a bygone era. Long long back, when I was a kid and lived up north they used to be the drink to have. Those were the socialist days when Coke had been chased out of the country by George Fernandes and his friends and desi drinks like Campa Cola ruled the roost.

But I think they folded up long long back. At least 15 years back if not more.

They are nearly defunct now. Here are a couple of pics. of the co. HQ at Delhi I found on flickr:

I remember as a kid back around 1990, there was a case against Campa-cola for allegedly containing BVO (Brominated Veg. oil)? I think they had disproved it eventually though.

BTW, I thought it was Morarji Desai who'd banned Coke back then?

And was there also a drink named Nova-cola back then? I remember seeing an ad for it in a Readers Digest 1979 issue.
