Local places in Goa

Anand seafood restaurant (Anjuna)
This is a basic place, rates are pretty cheap for seafood.

https://www.google.co.in/maps/place/....7607486?hl=en

Spice Goa (Mapusa)
Awesome Gomantak seafood, but a little upscale.

https://www.google.co.in/maps/place/....8242948?hl=en

Street food:

In Vagator on the main road, a guy sells omlet burger and chicken salami at night. Good for hungry party goers on a budget.

Pizza:
Piccolo Roma (Vagator)
Italian food and margherita pizza with ice cold beer. They have a wood fired oven.

https://www.google.co.in/maps/place/....7466194?hl=en

Another pizza place
Fellini (Arambol)
Wood fired pizza, pretty economical

https://www.google.co.in/maps/place/...3.701881?hl=en

Great breakfasts:
Noname guesthouse (Arambol)
Try their fruit bowl and vegetable sandwich with cream cheese.
This is slightly pricey at 250 rs for a fruit bowl but the quality and cleanliness is worth it.

Re: A Guide : Eating out in Goa

Had an unplanned visit to Goa (for the first time in my life) and came to know about the infamous off-season shutdown. All the beaches were vacant, devoid of any on-beach shacks.

Two places where had fairly good food was Mickey's in South Goa near Colva Beach and Cafe Sussegado Souza near Calangute. Liked the ambience of the latter. Quiet, peaceful, and ancient Goan property. Heritage reflected through the ambience.

Since our trip had an unexpected end due to heavy monsoon and had to return, this was all. Hope to update the list with better explorations next time

Re: A Guide : Eating out in Goa

In my last trip couple of weeks back, I visited Martin's Corner, Souza Lobo and Dropadi (Palolem) apart from some small shacks. All 3 was great.

Adding to an old thread.. Moderators, if this warrants a new one please move it.

What struck me was the ease with which we got good to great food, in most cases non-greasy. See the number of 7, 8 and 9 dishes. Why can't we get this in Whitefield, where every restaurant tries to outdo the next one in oily messiness?

Possibly because you're not going to the good restaurants in Whitefield.

Hmm, may be you should post it on this thread?

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/shift...bangalore.html (A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore)

In any case, my point is that we didn't do too much research, picked places by rating on Swiggy or Zomato, and they turned out good in most cases. I do the same in Whitefield, and they don't. Only places I can think of off-hand are Bloomsbury's, Cafe Palmyra and Oota.

Haha, yes you cannot trust ratings in Bangalore - I've actually figured out exactly why.

The restaurants you've suggested are where I would go - I would add to that Chez Mariannick, Herbs & Spices, Fat Chef (from a while ago anyway), Toscano, Cafe Noir. There are a couple more places whose names escape my mind now. The Indian restaurant above Palmyra is (was?) actually far better, though I'm not sure what the current status is.

Sorry, this is all terribly off topic!

Re: A Guide : Eating out in Goa

Not a foodie, but as far as Goa goes, I've seen that the closer you are to the beach, the worse the food is and lesser the value for money!

IMHO, as with any place, if you want authentic local food, look where the locals eat. The past few months in Goa, we've learned the hard way to avoid any place that has mainly out-of-state vehicles or taxis parked outside and stick to the smaller interior bars for the tastier (of course in our subjective opinion) stuff.

(But of course if you just want to try banana pancakes or gobi manchurian everywhere you travel, then zomato and instagram reviews are a good bet! )

Agreed and i follow this technique everywhere i travel. Food is fresh, priced as per local wallets, and fast moving.

On a lighter note, i do speed reading and i read that as banana manchurian and gobi pancakes. now to find a restaurant that does these

Ouch, that stings!

We prefer multi-cuisine restaurants in the name of diversity!

My apologies, I didn't mean it that way. Food is entirely subjective, to each their own.

I was just trying to give a pointer for folks who are more interested in trying the local cuisine of each place and hoping to share the lessons we learned the hard way after years of visiting Goa. All Goa beach shacks are leased out to locals, but rarely will you find a local actually running the place or hiring a local cook. The family run bars off the main roads are really the places to go local.

No offense taken. One aim of this 2-week long trip was to try out local food. While this was quite successful in Mangalore, didn't work out so well in Goa..

There is something about Goa. I am a vegetarian and usually, I get my order when my non-veg friends are digging onto their desserts. But only in Goa, of all places, I would get my order first, always. Initially, I thought it was just a coincidence, but then the experience has been consistent over the years, on multiple occasions across multiple restaurants.
