Credit card reward points can be redeemed at select outlets at the time of purchase.
But this may not be applicable to all credit cards from all banks.

I too have HDFC Bank World Card and never redeemed my points. Can you highlight how many points you swapped for 25K worth of Fab India coupons? |
Hello Mobike,
I also have the World Card. For Fab India you need 1620 points for a Rs.500 gift voucher. I swapped 81k points. I was also charged some Rs.75 (+ service tax) as a processing fee towards redemption.
To be honest : I have never been a fond of HDFC's reward program. But since I had to make some purchases from Fab India, I thought of redeeming the points.
I have attached the HDFC Cards Rewards Program catalog for your reference.

How do we pay using the credit points? I asked a cashier in Pothys to charge my purchase against the reward points. He nodded his head but charged it like a new purchase without redeeming the points. When asked about it he kept saying that I would get points added automatically for the purchase :Frustrati. |

First of all, the card in question must give you this choice. If it does, you can inform the cashier at
notified stores at the time of billing. He will then take a telephonic approval from the bank to adjust the points.
At all other stores just swipe the card as usual at the time of purchase. Call the bank the next day and inform you want to adjust X number of points against your dues, and the credit will appear in your statement.
I have two Platinum cards, one from Citi and another from HDFC. The former offers this option while the latter does not.
I always use the points from my Citi platinum card to adjust against card outstanding balance. I get 1 point for every Rs.125 spent and 1 point = Rs.1 which I thought was a good deal.

Thanks Amogh, for the Rewards catalogue upload!
Continuing to be lazy, can I ask you how the points are accrued. i.e. how much do I have to spend for getting 1 point? I have a Platinum plus card for whatever its worth!
cheers :)

2 points for Rs.150/- spent
However from time to time HDFC throws in some offers for eg currently they have an offer wherein online transactions get 50% more points. Last time I payed my HDFC Life premium using the HDFC card I got twice the number of points.
The best thing (at least for me) is that HDFC gives me the longest credit period - 51 days. Helps a lot to plan your cash flows.
I usually redeem fuel, also have got a 4GB pendrive some accessories for the Mrs.
I redeemed my points for
1. PS3
2. LG 1.5 ton split a/c.
the i-mint programme had some good gifts to choose from.
I am having Bank Of India's GoldCard for years.
I do shop a lot using the card. And accumulate a lot of points.
All that they do is waive my card renewal fees from the points (1750 Rs per year). I tried to break my head once with one of their guys and returned with headache.
He was hell bent that card renewal fees is the max that I can get back. The points can't be redeemed for cash apperently.
I think they do not have any worth point redemption program. Offlate I found a link on their websitewhich when clicked show some error.
However dealing with money, payments etc they are very very fair.
I still wonder if changing to HDFC card would be any worth?
I will keep only one card and hence would surrender BOI card if I opt HDFC card as I think it is just necessary evil.
Any suggestion?
Rgds.
My primary card has been Citibank IndianOil Titanium. 4 points for every 150 bucks of fuel spend. Accumulate 300 points and they adjust it against your bill.
Worst card for rewards is SBI Gold & More card. You need over 2100 pts at 100 rupees a point to get gift voucher worth 500. Shipping charges + tax = 109.20 extra!

Thats some serious gifting. Which card is this? The ICICI card? How many points do you get? How come I only get eligible for 500 Rs fuel vouchers? Damn!
For me its only and only cash.
Whatever points I get on my RBS card I redeem them totally for the cash.
HSBC took me for a serious ride by redeeming my 500 points something for a pathetic bag. After that I am converting my points to cash only.
I have an ICICI Gold Card as well with 4500 points.
Anyone has a list of items that can be redeemed for these points?

I think redemption of ICICI Credit Card points now happens through Payback (which was earlier i-mint) :
Payback
You will have to open a Payback account, call the ICICI Credit card helpline and transfer your current points to Payback.
Once your payback account number and ICICI card account number are linked : all your future points will be directly credited to payback account.

I can't find any information on the HDFC bank website. :Frustrati
