Re: The Tennis Thread

I wish instead of Nick getting a walk over into the finals, Firtz should have been promoted to the Semis to face Nick. Would have a gotten a match out of it

Re: The Tennis Thread

Novak Djokovic defeats Nick Krygios in 4 tough sets to win his 7th Wimbledon and 21st major overall! Djokovic never looked his usual fluent best throughout the tournament, however this did not stop him from lifting the trophy! Amazing player!

Re: The Tennis Thread

A match with tremendous potential ending in somewhat a dam squib.

I think Kyrgios had a very serious chance of winning the match, had he kept his composure and displayed temperament. Djokovic did not seem to have answers for his aces, and most drop shots. But then that it what makes Kyrgios, Kyrgios.

Funny anecdotes from the post match interview:

MC: "Now that you've achieved this, are you hungry for more?
NK: No
MC: Look forward too see you back next week
NK: I'm here now, I can't promise about next year. We're playing just too much tennis

Wimbledon finals, British royalty, Centre Court - he didn't seem to think much of any of it. Refreshing change from how buttoned up most players tend to be on such occasions.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Though he got closer to Nadal in the race for ‘total grand slam wins’, it is still advantage Nadal. Djokovic may not be able to play next two grand slams because of vaccine mandate. And we all know how Nadal plays in French open. So, that’s 3 grand slams for Nadal to consolidate the lead.

All that Covid mishandling by Djoker in the Australian Open has left a bad taste in my mouth. I have always been a fan, but the victory yesterday did not evoke the same kind of emotions in me as they did before.

I completely agree with you. For me, he behaved like a villain during that whole AUS OPEN saga. Getting vaccinated or not is one’s personal choice. But the way he tried to fool the system was absolute disgrace.
Djokovic is my second favourite (after Federer) among these top 3. But even I did not get the same ‘warm’ feeling yesterday that I would have normally got, after he got close to Nadal’s tally.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Nick was so embarrassing he made Novak look like Roger. This newgen has failed spectacularly with none since Novak arrived.

Quote:
2011-2014: 6 of 16 slams won (37.5%)
2015-2018: 7 of 15 slams won (46.7%)
2019-2022: 7 of 13 slams won (53.8%)

32-35 year old Djokovic > 28-31 year old Djokovic > 24-27 year old Djokovic
Roger had to face peak Rafa and Nole in his later years and he himself was the most challenging opponent to them instead of any younger player stepping up.

The Tennis Thread-atprankings.jpg

I'm not a fan of Djokovic but losing 2000 points even after winning Wimbledon is atrocious. The whole thing is a farce. The state of that list...

Re: The Tennis Thread

Is anybody looking for a player to play with? Wild shot but if you're in the West Delhi area and looking to play occasionally, hit me up. Thanks!

Re: The Tennis Thread

Serena Williams has called time on her career; looks like every tournament she plays this year might be her last. Here's her farewell from Toronto Masters.

US OPEN 2022

Daniel Medvedev is all set to lose his top ranking following a crushing defeat versus Nick Krygios in the round of 16. Krygios won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, or Casper Ruud now have a chance to be at the top of the rankings at the end of this week after defending champion Medvedev’s early loss.

Re: The Tennis Thread

With Rafael Nadal losing to Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16, we are all set to see a new US Open in a few days time. In arguably the upset of the tournament, Tiafoe won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to book a place in the quarter-finals.

However, Alcaraz or Ruud must make the final to have a chance of reaching the summit of ATP ranking. If neither does so, Nadal will return to the top spot once again!

Re: The Tennis Thread

Carlos Alcaraz is the 2022 US Open champion and the latest men's world no.1 player!

At just 19 years and 4 months, the Spaniard is the youngest and the first teenage player to top the ATP rankings, more than a year younger than the previous record holder, Lleyton Hewitt. His rise to the top has been phenomenal and rapid. Don't be surprised if he continues to dominate the tennis world for the next few years.

Alcaraz defeated 23-year old Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the title match. Alcaraz came into the finals winning 3 absorbing 5 setters on a trot in the preceding rounds.

With young guns like Alcaraz, Ruud, Tiafoe now coming to the party, the future sure looks exciting.

Re: The Tennis Thread

What I like about some of these players is that they are not so one dimensional as in just a big serve or a big ground stroke. They strike the ball with precision and power, no mindless ball bashing. And most importantly for a champion, they go for the lines most of the times, don't indulge in defensive match play. To that extent, they are different from even the "cross-over" generation of Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, and some others.

He would have won more slams if he had changed his racket head size earlier.

What an amazingly natural player, made tennis so effortless and classy. More than that, an amazing human being. He will be missed.
