Wow...this is some news to me. May be, he is already thinking about next year French Open? Or, may be preparing for US open, where he is relatively successful compared to AUS open and WIM.

Re: The Tennis Thread

With Rafa gone and Fedex not having a great outing in Halle, the firm favorite will be Djokovic in the Wimbledon. The new/next gen has grown up on hard courts and is not really the best at playing on grass. So the only other credible threat I see is one of those big serving players who on their day can blow one away - Isner comes to mind, Zverev too and Kyrgios being a dark horse - if he can get his act together.

Re: The Tennis Thread

2-week turnaround between tournaments can be brutal even on elite athletes once they're in their 30s. We'll probably only see Nadal and Federer play the occasional Grand Slam the next few years (ones they feel they can do well at), before they eventually retire.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Federer advances to Wimbledon 2nd round after surviving a huge scare against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the opening match. Federer and Mannarino were tied at 2 sets a piece, when the Frenchman retired due to knee injury which he had picked up late in the 4th set. The scoreline read 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 6-2, 0-0 in Federer's favour.

Re: The Tennis Thread

The Indo-British mixed doubles pair, Divij Sharan and Samantha Murray Sharan are the first married couple to participate in the Wimbledon mixed doubles event in 30 years!

News Link

The pair's journey was cut short in the second round after they failed to convert their first set lead and eventually went on to lose the match 6-3, 6-7, 3-6 to Croatia's Darija Jurak and South Africa's Raven Klaasen.

The writing is on the wall, perhaps. It's really heartbreaking for Federer fans like me. Hope this is not going to be his last outing at the Wimbledon.

I was looking forward to this match and after the first set, I was looking upto Federer to make a match of it. He obliged by leading 3-0 in the second set before squandering the set. By the looks of it, we could see the end of Federer pretty sooner. Hurkacz reminds me of a young Richard Krajicek although he is taller then him !!

Hurkasz inflicts Federer's first bagel at Wimbledon on the way to a straight sets victory. Great day for the young man.

A true great, but much as we'd wish otherwise, still a human. The spontaneous ovation at 0-30 in his final service game says it all.

Re: The Tennis Thread

As much a fan of Federer as I am, at age 40 its almost impossible to win a best of 5 at the semis or finals , unless the opponent retires . As it is Federer, Nadal and Djoker have raised the bar in terms of longevity, but its also primarily because not many players have the mental capacity to defeat them in best of 5 set matches. But someone eventually will. It could br Hurakasz’ tournament for all you know!

Re: The Tennis Thread

Being an hardcore Federer fan, I want him to retire immediately. I watched the last set yesterday and it was really painful to see him play like that. He has achieved everything (almost) in his career and I want him retire peacefully now. Otherwise, he may start getting some embarrassing records (like first bagel in Wimbledon, first loss in straight sets since 2001, etc) if he continues to play.

Barty picks up the Ladies Singles title beating Pliskova in a nervy match.

Berrettini meanwhile, is giving it a right go against Djokovic.

Berrettini reminds me of the person who is right now sitting in the player’s box of his opponent- Goran Ivanisevic !! Thing is, he has got the play as well apart from the booming serves. His game is tailor made for grass and I can see the game going right down to the wire and Djokovic’s experience can be the differentiating factor. In the end, expecting a great match

P.S- With Tom Cruise in attendance, this match could turn out to be an advertisement for Mission Impossible series if Berrettini comes out the winner

The crowd is playing its part. Berretini is getting louder cheers than his illustrious opponent, who reminds the crowd just who they're betting against.
