@ Brraj : It's best to create a thread in the meets section. Mass PMs are only used for very important Team-BHP news & announcements.

@ Moderators:

I think the quality of a lot of the posts/threads on this forum leaves a lot to be desired. I am no expert on the English language myself, but posting in proper grammar and punctuation should be strictly encouraged. Sam's thread about how to post properly in English is definitely a step in the right direction, but more should be done in this manner. Maybe you guys can alter your screening process in this regard a little bit during new registrations.

I can understand that English is not the first language for the majority of people on this forum, but that doesn't mean that we cannot be good at it. Just some food for thought for you guys.

Journey of a car model through its generations

I am new to this forum and have been trying to find out info regarding discontinued cars since all the best driver's cars seem to be found in discontinued lot (OHC etc). Surprisingly, I could find only tidbits of scattered info which is hard to piece together. The test drive section (shockingly) does not include reviews of cars which most enthusiasts rave on about and have been discontinued. After three days of various searches and reading, I want to start this thread: to discuss how a car has progressed since its launch in India. Wikipedia gives car model progression throughout the world with sketchy details regarding Indian models (case in point, Honda City). Again, harping on the same point, I am now exasperated to not be able to find when the City came to India in what form and how it progressed so I can know from one article about the three generations of the City. Ditto for models such as Sonata, the older Mercs etc. Automakers' habit of calling models GXi, EXi, ZX or ZXi, ZDi for various engine types/trim levels or lebelling them class E220/230...and so on (whether it's a W124, W210 etc) across generations makes it even harder to identify a car. Non standard nomeclature apart, it's also hard to find sorted data regarding a particular model. So unless one is a seasoned enthusiast, it becomes hard to find the life history of a model. So here I ask, may we start a classification systematically so that info regarding one particular model is available (not ownership reports, not opinions) which gives out some pics of the car, the specs of the car's variants for that generation and upgrades etc. Why I think this is necessary is that this kind of info regarding aircraft is easily available if you wish to see how a particular model progressed (say, a Boeing 737 or a MiG-21 or a Su-30 of which there are far more number of variants than a car can have) if you just pick up a Jane's guide. I may not be the first one to post this issue in which case can I be pointed to the right section? If nothing of this nature exists, then why don't we start posting? It's a Herculean task but am sure TBHP will have owners of wide ranging variety of cars and they would happily contribute. This is huge topic and probably needs a new section altogether with a thread for each car model. What say?

Hi DeltaWing,

We share the same views. I have been thinking of starting such topics since a long time now. In the Indian context, there are quite a few discontinued cars which need a good Introduction, History and detailed pics (on the same lines as a new car test drive). Something similar to this format - > Toyota Qualis - Product Review / Discussion

Some of the cars that come to my mind :
  • Tata Sierra / Estate / Sumo
  • Opel Astra / Corsa / Swing / Sail
  • Fiat Siena / Petra / Weekend
  • Ford Escort
  • Daewoo Cielo
  • PAL-Peugeot 309
  • Rover Montego
  • Standard 2000 (an exception to the post-1990 rulw)
  • Martui Suzuki 1000 / Esteem

You can refer to the below thread for more information :

Need more

@ V12: Awsome thread on the Qualis there. If I were to look for what Qualis was 10 years from now, I know where to look each time for all details. If only Toyota had styled it a little better...! Though the Indica and Zen thread are not equally detailed, it's a good thing to have them at all. So I'll put in my 2 cents and do a job on the M1000 and the Esteem. Will get back once I get the material to post. Thanks.

I think our policies (including new member approval) are strict enough, already . If you see any post that is completely out of line (poor readability etc.), please use the "report this post to a moderator" functionality. We will look into it ASAP.

If you need to know any information, maybe it's a good idea to start a topic instead of searching for days at a time It will also be interesting for members like me who is not specifically looking for that information. I am also disappointed due to the limited information available on Wikipedia regarding Indian cars. When I have time, I'll start a thread elsewhere on the forum so that interested Team-BHPians can collaborate on improving Wikipedia.

I agree with you but as GTO said, it looks like the Team-BHP Support Staff is already pretty strict while screening.

There are many posters on this forum who don't use proper punctuation. But their posts are not sobad that I'd want to report the post to T-BHP Support.

To anyone reading this,
- Start a sentence only with an uppercase letter. I know everyone knows this rule but many are too lazy to implement it.
- Proper nouns start with uppercase letters. It's not a skoda laura. It's a Skoda Laura.
- Always use a blank space after a comma or a full stop.dont do this. This is better.

Prateek, the chat option has been discussed before, and also rejected since it offerred no value. You could search for related posts on the same on this thread.

I think the only way to prevent one liner spam posts (which many people do just to increase counts) is to start deducting 20 post counts per spam one liner that a mod deletes. I'm getting really tired of one liners which add no value and just say "WOW, so cool, good, wish i had one, i did 180kmph in my 60bhp car in reverse gear, etc, etc, etc!!!!" Encourage people to PM the person he / she wishes to say thanks to and not on the thread. If you want to keep an eye on the thread, use the subscribe button. It takes 4 times the effort going through a long thread because of this one line nuisance!

New Registrations!!

I have a suggestion in this regard.

How about giving priority to the new joiners who have a referral from existing senior members later by members (*not newbies for now). Of course the registration page should be changed a bit making the referral field un-editable (it was editable when i joined back in 2006).

@Tejas, agree with you reg the one-liner responses - these dont add any value to the discussion, but just add to the post count of the thread & for the member. I think post count is an automated update, and hence manual deduction of post count may not be possible.

It definitely helps if members can check for themselves if their post is going to add value to the thread/discussion - before they post it. Like you said, they can always use the PM feature to communicate such msgs to the other person.

IMHO, just like these one-line no-value messages, even the quoting - esp quoting full messages is annoying. To me atleast.

What is the reason for this. For example if I have 4 issues with my car (which is 1) then I will have to open 4 new threads. Instead of that there can be a single thread, for example Hyundai Accent Issues thread where all the owners of Accent can pitch in if they know the resolutions.
PS: I faced this issue a week back, That's why I'm making a point here.
No offense meant.

EDIT: I guess its an OT
1 more thing I always wanted to know. Does this search function really work or is there something i need to know as IT never worked for me.
For example; I type Hyundai Accent. and below is what I get as result.
Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians-sss.jpg

What is going wrong here? I mean the search result is totally irrelevant to what I typed.

A single thread often runs into several pages making in almost impossible to search for a particular issue or advice.

In your case an Ownership thread with suitable title(mentioning your issues) would be much easier to document & search.

Also all issues in one thread again means that if a car has 10-15 issues browsing through thread for a specific issue(s) would be difficult.

I hope this explains.
