re: Which watch do you own?

@architect
Citizen as well as Seiko have nice automatic watches in the Rs 5k - 10k price bracket. I have seen them in leading watch stores (P.ORR & Sons, Zimson) in Chennai. I am sure they will be available in leading watch stores at Delhi as well. Ask for them specifically. We can also see the words "automatic" on the back case. Also check for wordings such as "21 jewels" etc on the dial. These are sure signs of a mechanical watch.

Also check out the nearest HMT store. They have some nice automatics - especially the ADSL series. Costs around Rs 3.5k.

re: Which watch do you own?

Guys I am looking for a Tag watch to buy. I was generally checking the US prices and because of the Dollar being so high against the Rupee there is'nt much of a difference in the price in India and US.

Then I came across this site "Tag Heuer- Largest Discount Watch Store"

The store prices are really cheap, some are even cheaper to the tune of 40%.

Now what I would want to know is if the website is genuine, and I have no idea how to check that. The layout seems to be very good but then I guess best is to be wary because of the discounts offered.

Can anyone good at it kindly check and inform me of the same??

Regards

re: Which watch do you own?

Deky: I'd stay away from any online watch store. There are just too many fakes out there.

The carrera tags cost over a lakh and it's fir less than 500$ on this website. Something's fishy for sure.

When it is too good to be true, it really is. My advice is stay away from that site and buy only from AD. There are too many fakes out there of high end watches. One of my friend got cheated at one forum, he bought a fake rolex at no so cheap (But cheaper than retail) price. It was exact replica and he got to know that its fake after 3 years when he was at a watch shop to get one watch for his wife.

This was the original requirement:

2. Not large, since I have a small wrist and a moderate build.
3. Not very flashy, since it goes totally against my own sense of dressing and behaviour.
4. Good looking, well proportioned with clear and elegant numerals and typefaces.
5. Resistent to sweat as I tend to sweat a lot and that seems to have affected the coating of all the watches I have had earlier.
Quite a few recommendations came for Seiko 5 series as well as Citizen for affordable mechanical movement watches. Many people also recommended HMT

So, finally friends, here it is:

A Seiko 5 series mechanical movement watch with automatic winding. It is a little heavy and a little thicker than I would have liked, but I like it's looks and fit-and-finish (including that of the strap). I also love the glass back.

Retailed at a price of Rs 5,750/- in the Seiko Authorised dealership at Khan Market.

I am wearing a mechanical movement watch after 18 years. The feeling of watching the continuous revolution of the second hand is mesmerising and so is the 'tik-tik' in the quiet of the night instead of the 'tak-pause-tak' of the quartz. I hope it stays.

Some pictures (10:10:35 timing was purely co-incidental, believe me!)

Lovely watch architect. Glass back is an interesting touch. Hows the durability of the Glass back?

Online is a risky proposition, desist from buying watches online.

Major retailers in Delhi give any where from 15% - 30% discount, depending on the demand and your haggling ability. Do not go to the Tag shops, but to high end retailers like Kapoor or Johnson. I got 20% on Rado and 25% on my Rolex and my Son's Tag, but persistent souls have bargained much better discounts.

Thanks. Yes, the glass back is indeed a nice touch. (A glass dial base under the hands is also nice, but it makes the dial look too cluttered, IMO). As far as durability is concerned, I can't say. The whole idea of buying this watch was to buy something durable without a big dent on the wallet. In that sense, I am happy that I got this one well within the original budget.

A couple of questions:

1. What's the model #?
2. What is the warranty period, and is it an international warranty?

Congrats on your new possession!

Cheers,

Do Exact replicas last for 3 years??? Not bad if you paying 1/10th of the price

Anyway, back to my querry, I have decided not to buy from the site I mentioned as you guys mentioned, it seems to good to be true!!

15-30% discounts, are you serious? I was offered 7.5% discount on the Tag I shortlisted, and I would have been happy if I got 10% discount. Now I should think about waiting and buying it from Delhi, guess it would be a huge saving if what you saying is true.

Btw, would u be able to help me here? If I pm you the serial number, would you be able to find out, over the phone maybe, how much discount are they willing to offer??

Thanks for the update on discounts available!!

Regards to all

Thanks. The pricing is indeed very good. I had almost given up on mechanical watches below Rs 20,000/-.
Model number is Seiko 5 St. Steel 7S26-02. It came with one year of International Warranty and one year of Service Warranty in India for the second year.

Replicas vary in quality. I was reading about Rolex replicas, and believe me they range from less than $100/ to $2,000/. The cheaper ones have Chinese digital modules, and a cheap case, while the most expensive ones have a genuine Swatch (Omega) mechanical movement and first class case and bracelet.

Pleased to help you. Please PM me the models. Next time I go to the market, I will inquire. Normally you have to be on the look out for bargains. In case you come to Delhi, visit the show rooms of both Kapoor Watch as well as Johnson Watch. They have a number of show rooms - CP, South Extension, Emporio Mall etc. When their next add comes I will note the locations.

With the current recession, sale of high value watches is on the decline, hence there will be better bargains to be had, of course they will always try the ploy that prices are increasing due to dollar, but as they have the inventory for at least three months, they are just trying their bit to get better prices.

re: Which watch do you own?

At last, after dilly dallying for a really looong time, I mustered up the courage to spend more than 10k on a watch and bought a Seiko 5 Sports Automatic today.

Model number is SNZF11K1, and it cost me Rs.12,800. Warranty coverage is worldwide warranty for the 1st year and service warranty applicable in India for the 2nd year.

Even though I tried to pit one dealer against another to see if I got any discounts, neither budged from the MRP. Guess the heavy discounts are applicable only for the expensive Swiss marquees. Anyway, am not going to lose much sleep over it!

Here's a pic:

Apologies for the really bad photo quality; a better pic can be seen here, courtesy moderator Rudra Sen:

Excellent buy! It's raining Seiko 5s this weekend on Team-BHP!

This was one of the watches I had shortlisted in the showroom yesterday. But I did not particularly want a chronograph and the numerals on the outermost rotary dial were a bit too big for my taste.
