It's true. The mainsprings in automatics are made to deliberately "slip" in the barrel at full-wind... it's not like windup watches where you can crank it up too tight and break it.

Sure they slip, but that must cause wear? If they don’t get overwound there is less wear I am thinking. To what extend that translates into something I am not sure though. Just don’t like the idea of my winder thingy turning and turning and the mainsprings slipping and slipping.

I am on the lookout for a Tourbillion'watch. I find an Era for under 200,000. Is it true?

If so then how are these watches.

It’s a very new brand and most if not all their watches are on pre order. Reliability and their movements are yet to be proven and if they go kaput, repairing them in India will cost more than the watch itself.

If you want a tourbillion at this moment, it would be safer to add another zero.

If the winder turns slowly enough, it may hardly wind to the slipping point anyway, since of course the watch is always also winding down...

But presumably that's why specialized barrel grease is used in there. I suppose only an experienced watchmaker would be able to say whether barrel ID's ever wear out - but I'd doubt it as the slip (if there at all) is so incredibly slow, it's well-lubed, and there are no heat or contaminants there - just not much of a wear environment. And only the outermost coil of the mainspring would be exposed to slip, and spring steels are hard, so that's hardly an issue I'd think.

But yes, from what I hear your source is right that modern synthetic oils have an almost indefinite shelf life and that they're not going to gum up / dry out from non-use like, say, an old fish-bone based oil might have seventy or more years ago, or lower-grade oils still might. Not sure what Seiko used, but some of their 1980's watches would allegedly run 25 years without service.

All said, probably not worth bothering with winders unless running stuff with moonphase or hard-to reset day/date functions that the user would rather keep current. Or maybe if having watches serviced with ₹20 Microtime oil down in the gari bazar... which, since costing within maybe ₹300 for full-service, saves you a lot of money to put towards watch-winder purchases!!!

Re: Which watch do you own?

I would like to Present the only watch I've ever owned. I have never really liked watches as I find them quite constricting. I prefer to keep my wrists free, to the point that even a ceremonial dhaga or rakhi is too much to handle for more than 1 hour.

That said, I present to you my anniversary present - Casio A158W

Pros
- Works Fine in all scenarios
- Looks classy if you're classy
- Not that constricting on my wrist, maybe it's the love behind it
- Cheap AF

Cons
- None that I can think of

I like it! This is one of the Casio classic series. These type of watches came about in the 70s I guess, when this technology made its break through into consumer goods big time.

They are very cheap watches, but incredible accurate. They will outperform any mechanical/automatic fancy brand of course.

If you google it, you will find several reviews calling it the best cheap digital watch!

Enjoy, I might get one too.

They say they can service for $25. I have my doubts.

I think the bottom line is do'nt. Also it seems to be a US brand.

This one brings back memories, this watch would be the envy of everyone! I remember one kid used to wear it and everyone in the school used to flock to him to check it out.

I jumped on the bandwagon and purchased this over the weekend. The watch finally arrived.

AND ITS TINYYY

So much that it actually fits nicely on the wife's wrist (she's already getting some thoughts ). But I'm liking it already; the watch is ultra lightweight but doesn't give a el-cheapo feel.

Re: Which watch do you own?

I find the glass on my watch broken.
Are there any watch repair shops who stock HMT spares in Bangalore or I need to visit HMT watch showroom? I bought it online, HMT showroom is quite far from my home (I am near Sarjapur). My watch is less than 6 months old.
