Delhi students make supermileage car

June 01, 2005 18:35 IST

For those worried about rising fuel prices and low mileage of cars, relief may be closer than you think.

Students of the Delhi College of Engineering have developed a 'supermileage' vehicle with a fuel efficiency of 150 kms per litre.

The concept car, which will participate in the World Supermileage Vehicle Competition being organised by Society of Automobile Engineers International at Michigan in the US, was flagged off on Wednesday by Chief Minister Sheila Dik****.

This is the first time that an Indian team is taking part in a world competition on innovative concepts. It will also be the only team from Asia this year in the event.

The aerodynamic green-and-black car with a body made of carbon fibre and reinforced plastic weighs 55 kgs. It can seat only one person and has a top speed of 36 km per hour.

The 14 students of DCE's third year production and mechanical engineering course who developed it have named themselves 'Team Endeavour'.

Neha Juneja, the only girl in the team, said the 3.5 hp, four-stroke 140 cc Briggs and Stratom engine used in the car had been given to them a year back by SAE International. They then reduced its capacity to 60 cc so that it could achieve its 'supermileage'.

Congratulating the team members on their achievement, Dik**** said, "We are proud of the students who are making an effort to achieve fuel efficiency."

The concept car uses 100 octane petrol meeting Euro-6 standards, which is not available in India as yet. It does not have a fuel tank and instead makes do with a 'fuel bottle', which holds about a litre of petrol.

However, the engine which does not have multi-point fuel injection system and tyres which are not world-class may prove to be drawbacks for the vehicle when it takes on others at the Michigan competition to be held on June 9 and 10.

Thirty-six teams from universities across the US, the UK, France and several other countries will participate in it.

The project to develop the car was supported by DCE, the department of science and technology of the government of India and a number of players from the auto industry. The vehicle will be dismantled and sent to the US while the team members will head for the country on June 5.

DCE students had earlier designed and developed a Formula student car and an all-terrain vehicle, which received the FISITA Best Endeavour award, according to a release from the institute.

*** please dont call it a car at least. A puny 60 cc engine pulling a weight of 55 kgs with no technological breakthrough is being hailed as a "concept" car. I do not expect Miss CM to be know a thing about it but DCE guys praising it

Great work by these students.
However this car will be what it is CONCEPT CAR.
sorry, but single seater, 60cc, 55kg car will be not practicle in city driving.
any idea about engine alterations & tyres? they must be using very think tyres to reduce the air resistance & contact area, also my guess is that this car must be sensitive to addition of weight

Anyways still a great work done by the students

Well, the original 140cc engine had 3.5hp output. Pray, what is the final power output after the reduction to 60cc?

I'd rather drive a cycle than buy this supermileage car. The cycle would be cheaper, healthier, faster, and would have infinite mileage.

but people don't forget this car is specially build for this event.
which is to make best out of everydrop. & thus you can get away with being single seater, under powered
against there are races of cars powered by solar energy those cars are too single seater, bad lookin, have low power but then again those cars too are built for that purpose only

why did they have to go through all the pain of building an engin eallthey needed to do was to source the now defunct Mofa 25cc engine (was a chain saw 2 stroke engine) it gave 125 kmpl without any mods and could pull 2 people with ease ... change the carbs to smaller ones rejet and you can beat the 150kmpl record...

the people who support the cause for building the project vehicle may be right in their own point of view.
but the milage marathon vehicles comfortably cross 2000 mpg figures..
the record is around 4000 mpg....
THATS THE MILEAGE AND ANYTHING LESS THAN 1.5 K MPG IS NOT WORTH THE EFFORTS.
actually the well to wheels emissions should be taken in to accounts.
exotic materials+premimum fuels cost a lot and produce significently more amount of total polution in manufecturing only.... its even before its added to the vehicle..
bike wheeled space frammed single sater THREE with mofa engine and 5 to 10 speed gear set < mach 5 ,mach 10 of bsa brands> can comfortably give 200+kmpl if thermal insulation to the engine and starter is fitted , and driven with wot -off ,wot- off style AND TYRE PRESSURE @80 PSI..
it wont cost more than 10 - 15 k rupees if purchased brand new ... and 5 - 10 k if purchased scond hand
3.5 cc 2 stroke model aircraft engine can give even more .....

This is a three year old thread

Btw anything new happening in India with the supermileage concept?

The original can hardly be called a car.
