Pada - Malayalam (Amazon Prime)

For some reason, this one never came up on my radar of movies to watch till it was mentioned on this thread by folks. That's sad, because this one really does deserve more attention.

Based on a true incident where 4 people took hostage a collector to put forth their demands to the government with regards to tribal land related laws, the movie delivers and how! The action is taut, and at no stage do you feel it is being drawn-out. In fact, i didn't even realise how quickly we got to the interval, which shows how smoothly the sequences were executed.

Clippings and visuals from the real life event help cement this as non-fiction cinema, and the acting from all involved was top class, including the support actors.

Highly recommend a watch.

Radhe Shyam (Telugu)

Streaming: Prime

I am still dazed, is this the same Prabhas who acted in Bahubali? Whose action scenes are still a craze on Sony TV playing dubbed movies. He seems to be so wooden in expressions, acting. The plot was tasteless and hopeless, acting less than mediocre, un hummable songs. All in all an ideal recipe for a headache. I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch this. Even if one does at his own risk.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Bheeshmaparvam (Malayalam) on Amazon Prime

Plenty of style and not much substance - that's the overwhelming feeling I had after the credits rolled. The Godfather homage is impossible to miss. But where the original gives us an insight into the world of Sicilian mafia which was thriving in USA those days and was replete with character arcs cultivated across multiple (very long) movies, the tribute here shows an unrealistic story and several hastily crafted characters (and 3 songs) all crammed into less than 2 hours 30 minutes runtime.

Mammootty's screen presence carries this movie while rest of the characters barring Shine Tom Chacko's are not adequately fleshed out. Soubin especially did not convince me as neither the serene and composed family man in first half nor as the indignant and menacing brother in the second. I found first half where the world was being built interesting but the latter half where retribution was being doled out to assorted villains as if some checklist being stroked off quite meh.

Overall I felt that the movie is a one time watch to kill a weekend night. Watch without much expectation on the content except for visual style and one may not be entirely disappointed.

Baba Baby o.. (Hoichoi)
Interesting premise and not a bad movie to watch
Like most Shivaprasad-Nandita movies however, I felt this was 15-20 min too long and a bit preachy at times.
The 2 babies steal the show along with Jishu's dad.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Beeshma Parvam
OTT : Disney Hotstar

Rating 3/5

A pukka Amal Neerad movie as expected. Engaging from start to end. Especially loved the ambience created for the movie as the story is happening in late 1980s, without making it too obvious or plasticky as movies showcasing such eras usually do. The detailing of this period was taken care of pretty well except for a very very small mistake in one of the scenes (mentioned in the end of post)

Mamooty easily carried forward the flamboyant style of acting and dialogue delivery from Big B, in a different avatar and getup. Even the story had some tinges from Big B, especially the climax scene. Seeing Nedumudi Venu and KPAC Lalitha together for one last time really made it special. Finding replacements for such hugely talented actors is surely not an easy task and malayalam film industry will surely miss them.

Now between BigB and Bheeshma, I still think BigB was a far better movie. Cos BigB gave enough screen time for each character to develop their storyline. But with Beeshma it was kinda in fast forward mode. With so many characters, no character had the screen time to flesh out their story line properly. Same for the villian. Sayippu in BigB had a bigger screen presence compared to Bada Rajan in Beeshma. Maybe if the movie was longer by 30-45 mins and some of the characters like Mamooty's love interest were dropped, it might have been possible. Every scene just got over in a flash. Especially the climax. In BigB the climax was really impactful which was well scripted with a proper explanation of how it was done. In Beeshma, it again just got over in a flash with some vague explanation.

Finally the mistake I noted. Really nothing. Just noting it here for fun sake as this is an automotive forum . In the scene where Soubin rams his lorry into martins amby - just before the accident martin is shown driving without seatbelt. Post the accident, when the car is flipping over in the air, martins closeup shows him wearing a seatbelt. So kinda 2 mistakes -
1. Appearance of seatbelt in that scene
2. Amby in 1988 surely wont have a seatbelt.

Pada
OOT : Amazon Prime

Rating : 4.5/5

Just a great movie capturing the original incident without fictionalising or dramatising it too much. .
And surely wouldnt mind giving this a 5/5 rating, but then I might not prefer to sit and watch it again. Hence 4.5

Hey Sinamika Tamil
OTT : Netflix
Rating : 1.5/5

The usual DQ style movie of similar genres. A little dragging towards the 2nd half. One time watch.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pada was awesome. The gritty documentary nature of the film with no compromises really worked wonders. All the actors did well.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Bheeshma parvam- Why did they even bother? All irritating slow mo and no substance. Tom Chacko shines as usual and is the only actor in the cast who earned his pay.

One small consolation - you could see legendary artists like Nedumudi and KPAC together on the screen for the very last time. Their brief appearance literally dwarfed all the other wannabes.

Now need to watch The Godfather to restore sanity.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Interesting opinions on Bheeshma Parvam. I haven't watched it myself. But it seems that those who watched it in the theatres are generally more impressed with the film that those who watched it on OTT platform. I am not only referring to the opinions here but also outside the forum.

Is this down to the theatre experience? Watching the action unfold on the big screen is definitely something that home viewing cannot match. In a movie hall, your focus for the length of the movie is on the screen (even if you feel a bit bored). But at home you may be distracted and may not even watch the movie in one go.

Another factor could be expectations. After generally good reviews from people who watched in theatres, the expectations from a movie will be greater for someone watching it on OTT platform. So it's easier for the movie to fall short of high expectations.

I had a similar experience with Hridayam. It had generally positive reviews from the theatres. The first time I watched it on OTT, there were certainly a few interruptions and I was not particularly impressed with the movie. I watched it a second time with no interruptions and it was definitely a better experience. Equally, I think I may have subconsciously had lower expectations from the movie during the second watch.
