Watched it yesterday evening and loved it. The art of telling stories is something that Malayalam movies have mastered since long ago and this is another example.

A nicely made movie - 4/5

It is truly a brilliant movie. As you said there are subplots. Small conversations throw up the reality of today. Oliver Twist talking with his wife about how their day-to-day life is !! Such a brilliant point in the movie

Indrans has been brilliant. Slipping into a complex character - a father going through a crisis of taking care of his dad who probably suffers from dementia to a couple of sons - one independent, one dependent. This is a must-watch for sure.

4/5 for me for sure. I have not given any movie 5/5 till now

[W/O Ram - Telugu, Netflix]

This one has been sitting in my Netflix list for a while. This week finally found the time to pick it up.

A lady and her husband who were returning to the city after a getaway at a resort, are found at the scene of an accident - the husband dead; the lady, grievously hurt and having suffered a miscarriage. The police (corrupt and inefficient) are inclined to shelf this case too among all the other unsolved vehicle accident cases - but the lady has other ideas. After recovering, she embarks on a personal journey to unearth the killer of her husband.

The premise is fine, the investigation track believable, the plot twists surprising and performances decent. Some scenes/threads are stretched unnecessarily but everything - even the most seemingly irrelevant character - is tied to the final denouement satisfactorily. But I'd say the movie is strictly for the fans of the genre.

#Home - Indrans undoubtedly shines. But rest of the cast was too loud/uninvolved. Had the editor used his scissors properly, it could have been salvaged. Was way too lengthy for its wafer thin content.

For those who want to see Indrans really shine, do not miss "Velukkakka Oppu Ka". Simply superb. Subtle story telling at its very best. The man literally lived the role. Reminded me of an Oduvil Unnikrishnan gem from long ago - "Oru Cheru Punchiri".

Kasada Tabara - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-d7awioqvuaa8em1.jpg

Synopsis - The lives of a few individuals get impacted, both in good and bad ways, by the actions of others who are hardly connected to them.

Started off well, then it got a bit boring then got interesting towards the end. At times you feel that the movie is a bit too long even though it isn't. Nothing new here but it was a reasonable watch.

Rating - 3.5/5 (Available on Sony Liv)

Ozhuvu Divasathe Kali (Malayalam 2015) [An Off-day Game]

Ozhuvu Divasathe Kali

I was postponing this for years until last week. It is a stunning portrayal of Varnashrama and the way it benefits those in top of the pyramid. I heard last 50+ minutes were live.

Two malayalam movies, two performances stand out.

Movie 1- Home.
What a brilliant performance from Indrans. Simply superb. What a nice little movie too. A welcome break from the monotonous dark malayalam movie themes of late.

Movie 2- kuruthi. What ridiculuous acting from prithviraj. The movie had a few things going for it but gets completely undone by Prithviraj's forced attempt at acting. I agree with a previous post, this movie shows how bad an actor he is. It was just forced, constipated emoting that became tough to watch afrer a while.

Tuck Jagadish - Telugu - Prime Video.

Worst movie, please avoid. Avoid watching with kids, typical telugu mass movie where the villains are the worst people on the whole planet, the hero is the kindest, family loving person. Climax involves the hero killing all the villains, reforming his family members, in this case the villains cannot even touch is tucked shirt.

Watched Sarpatta Parambarai on Netflix.

What a movie and great acting as well. The Hero's wife, 'Daddy', coach Rangan, everyone did a great job.

If anything, I would say they could have done better with the editing. It felt a bit too long. Also I felt it to be loud at times.

Other than that, a great watch.

Kaanekkaane - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-kaanekkane_poster_11092021_1200.jpeg

It started off well and was moving towards an investigative thriller genre (It reminded me of a famous movie of Joju George). Then you realize it's an emotional thriller, a pretty intense one. Although the movie was just 2 hours, I sometimes felt it to be a bit dragging and long. All 3 acted pretty well but Suraj nailed it again. He was brilliant as always.

One time watch definitely. Nothing to talk about. You will definitely forget about this movie after few months.
Available on SonyLIV.

Rating - 3.75/5

Kaanekkaane: Echo Naveen's review and rating. A solid emotional drama with some great performances. Such movies need great performances to work with the audience and the lead cast does not disappoint. Suraj , Tovino and Aishwarya all do a great job.

Halfway into the movie, once the core reveal is done, you know where it is all going to end up and the only thing left is how it gets there. The performances in some scenes in this section is what holds you till the end.

Tuck Jagadish: Telugu movie on Prime. Genre : Action Drama

Nani's movies are liked by all in general. They are usually light-hearted simple movies. But no this one. Actually this is not even like any other Telugu movie entertainers- which are apologetically commercial and feature happy-go-lucky hero with good comedy timings/scenes/characters. For whatever reason they have tried to be unreasonably gory/serious/gloomy in this one surpassing even some Tamil movies. Movie has good support cast but are not utilized well.

Personal Recommendation:
Avoid/Watchable/Watch

Suraj is a proven actor by now and this must have been another cake walk for him. However it is worthy to note that both Tovino and Aishwarya have upped their game in terms of acting skills, compared to their earlier movies. Overall a nice movie and definitely worth a watch :thumbs up.

Watched Annabelle Sethupathi. Nothing to write about. 2/5. Both points are for Yogi Babu only who tried to hold the film. The irritating part is that the producers wanted to make a movie which viewers from south India and few from north should watch and make it a pan India success. Quite ambitious but the movie got knocked out for being so artificial.

Sunny - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-screenshot_1.png

Although this pandemic took a big hit on movies, there's been many interesting stories adapted on the subject. Sunny is one such movie.

It was just one guy all the way in the movie but some familiar voices can be heard during the phone conversations. The movie is boring and interesting at the same time. It's the BGM and Jayasuriya's acting that keeps the movie alive.

Nothing great, just another pandemic related story.

Rating - 3/5

Sunny: Jayasurya- A slow moving one man show set during the lockdown. Jayasurya has come in from Dubai, is in quarantine at a 5 star hotel (Lot of the movie seems to be an ad for the Grand Hyatt Bolgatty-Kochi Hotel :D), has a bunch of financial and personal problems. Movies attempts to show his struggles while being alone in quarantine. Overall found it average

Rating: 2/5

Annabelle-Sethupathi: As a movie, one of those comedy, horror, reincarnation, slapstick 'leave your brain behind' combo movies which you see as a time-pass. From that perspective, yes, it was a time-pass with some decent laughs.

What I could not wrap my head around was how someone like Taapsee Pannu and Vijay Sethupathi decided to do this. Taapsee has been doing some solid films and seems to be pretty choosy even with Hindi movies. So every 5 min, my mind would go 'Really! what made you chose this'. Same with Vijay Sethupathi. Unless they thought- 'We are bored, lets do something nonsensical'
