Me and spouse are evaluating Star Health's - Health Assure plan. It has feature of automatic restoration of sum assured. Which means, if 10 lac claim gets claimed, then 10lac is restored unlimited times during the policy year.

Will update which one I choose when finalized.
This sounds good, I'll try on my next renewal which is in a couple of months, if this works at my age.

Try and go through an agent, less headache at times of non cashless claim.

Most of the insurer's offer this option for a higher premium as compared to the standard plan.

Some of them offer a one time restoration, while others offer a multiple restoration benefit. The pricing differs accordingly.

Re: Health insurance queries? Ask me!

Hello to the knowledgeable folks here. I need some advice on the way forward to good health coverage.

I'd soon be 46, and have been covered by corporate insurance throughout the time I have had health insurance. Come November, I plan to permanently move out of regular employment to explore other opportunities.

I would thus need to insure my family (homemaker wife aged 43 and daughter aged 12) when I am no longer employed. I have the option to either go in for coverage independently or port the current corporate cover (that covers my family too) to a personal one. How could I go about evaluating which route is better?

Also, the corporate insurance is handled by a TPA. What must I keep in mind when discussing portability with them? Can I change the insurance vendor and TPA post such a porting, if needed?

Thank you.

Re: Health insurance queries? Ask me!

Team, need some advice here.

I was so stupid to have missed to renew my parents' top-up insurance policy which I was holding with HDFC Ergo.

The grace period was till 03-Oct and only today (10-Oct) did I come to know about it.

I called up the customer care and was told that the policy has expired and I will have to go for a new policy.

Is there any remote chance of getting the policy renewed?

P.S: Don't ask me about how I missed this important stuff / I would have got reminders etc., I'm already pissed with myself on this.

Unfortunately there is no way out mate. But as it’s only a top-up policy won’t be a hassle to get a new one. Next time add the policies to EIA and add the policies in it. You will be reminded through the portal. We all make mistakes, just make sure we don’t repeat it.

As I understand the positives of an agent is he can really help with choosing a policy if he is good and objective and can help with claims. Urban folklore is that insurance companies tend to reject individual claims but agents can help with such cases
The negatives is the loading on premium for life.(I heard 10-15%)
A bigger risk is if the agent winds up his business you are stuck with higher premiums

Any opinions from people who have been on this route and have done some research ? Is there a justifiable value add in going through an agent assuming you have done basic research already?
From my personal experience I can say that its always better to have an agent because if you are the one who is admitted then your family will not be able to handle the Insurance formalities and they may not have the knowledge to file for claims properly.

When I was hospitalised, Care Insurance didn't reimburse for the non-reimbursible items like gloves, sanitizers etc in cashless. Later when I went through the policy details, I realised I had taken Care Shield which covers such items. I sent a reimbursement claim for it and had to do a lot of follow up in their office and on email. They finally reimbursed it.

One of my friend's also realised this issue and he thought its better to appoint an agent. You too have to have some knowledge as you cannot depend on the agent completely but the agent would be atleast of some help in case you are hospitalised. The premium savings by going direct are hardly 5% but the reimbursement loss can be significant.

Re: Health insurance queries? Ask me!

Hi guys, i wanted to know if any of you have migrated to a newer health insurance plan in the same insurance company by keeping your continuity? If yes, then please name the company.

Last year my wife had a Care Maternity plan for 3 years and then wanted to shift to Care Supreme which is their newest lan, but she was forced to take a new policy as it could not be migratred and all the benefits and continuity was lost.

I too had a Care basic plan and was informed I could not migrate as its for new customers only. I would have to buy a new plan and hence loose all benefits.

In such cases, does one need to port to another company and then again port to the previous comany next year to avail of the newer plans?

I have changed my family cover plans with ICICI Lombard several times now without having to take a new plan.

Was it a complete plan change or minor changes in the same plan like Sum assured and member etc?

True. I also have care health insurance plan since 10 years. They denied to change to their new plans which I felt are better. I even offered health tests and based on that they can switch but they refused. They didn't offered any explanation too. I am still continuing in the old plan

I am thinking to port next year for some other provider.

Initially I had taken a basic family floater with low cover and I switched to a different family floater (with higher base cover and higher room rentals etc) 8-10 years ago. This was a new plan altogether. This IIRC is termed as "migration" of policy [the wait time benefits for specific illnesses etc were carried over to the new plan].
Post that the policy itself was migrated to another name by ICICI and over the years I've been tweaking the optional covers & sum assured based on my "perceived" needs (these are modifications under the same plan).

I must also say that when I shifted my super top up from ICICI Lombard to Acko, they did not do a porting but issued a new policy.
I did not pursue a porting since acko offered the policy with no waiting time for specific illnesses/pre existing diseases - which in effect, seemed identical to a porting.

Did you ask to port to Care Supreme? I believe they are offering Care Freedom instead. Porting is one good option but check your pre existing diseases first as they might apply waiting period. My renewal is in March, so 2 months before I will apply and check. The agent says I cannot buy Supreme plan, however when I sent email to renewal team, they didn't deny, but sent me a health declaration and questionairre like I am buying a new policy which confused me.

Thanks for the info. As far as I know porting is not an option for Super Top up / Top up plans.

I don't recollect the name. It is a 10 year old policy since Religare times. It is named as just care with some add ons. I asked for 1 Cr health insurance policy which they were promoting heavily last year. I remember it is called Advantage. It was buying like a new policy instead of changing from one plan to another. So decided against it and continued with existing plan but took 3 year plan as it gave some discounts and I was crossing 40 age bracket.
