Deva

Heard it's a remake but had no clue about the story etc. Had low expectations and only watched it because of Shahid. Movie was surprisingly good. Action is decent, mystery for most part is well done. Support cast has done a good job. Bgm and cinematography capturing Mumbai was done really well.

Rating- 3.5/5

Yes, Deva is a remake of a 2013 Malayalam Movie called 'Mumbai Police' starring Prithviraj. Same director. Heard the Hindi version was watered down a little and also expanded to play to Shahid Kapoor mass avatar. Not sure what is the climax of the hindi version, but the Malayalam one had a fairly shocking climax twist considering the 2013 time frame. That may not hold any shock value today. Original is available in Hotstar.

The Sabarmati Report on Zee5

The story of a journalist battling vested interests in the media & political landscape, covering the infamous Godhra incident of 2002.

Frankly speaking, I was expecting more after watching the trailer, but I believe the makers have tried to play very safe to avoid any political ramifications. Vikrant Massey, as usual does a terrific job, supported ably by Ridhi Dogra and Raashi Khanna.

Loveyappa- 3.5/5

Decent movie with fresh approach and feel. Simple storytelling without stretching too much. Enjoyed 2hr plus in theatre after a long time.

Mrs. ZEE5

This Sanya Malhotra headlined movie is such a worthy remake of ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’- the Malayalam masterpiece. While the original was in a traditional home, this Hindi remake is in a much more modern setting of a family of doctors. The everyday toxicity and random misogyny is so glaringly shown that it hits you in the gut. For those folks who have not seen the original, please do have a look at this one. Sanya Malhotra has acted brilliantly and so does the rest of the actors including Nishant Dahiya. This movie should be made mandatory viewing across cross sections of the society. Highly recommended watch.

The Mehta Boys

The Hindi Movies Thread-1.jpg

A light hearted movie showcasing the relationship between a dad and his son. It's a straight forward story and nothing new but they have portrayed it well. Good acting by all but Boman Irani as always pulled it off with ease. I have always loved this guys acting (he can do any kind of role). Not sure if he directed any other movie before, if not pretty good for a debutant.

Rating - 4/5 (Amazon Prime). Recommended.

Chhavaa 3/5

I am a big fan of Vicky Kaushal and he does not disappoint in this movie as well. Though such movies need a different kind of directorial and storytelling skills, Chhavaa and Laxman Utekar were pretty average here. There was no character building but only focus was on dialogues and fight scenes. Akshay Khanna was decent, did not have much to do other than being unrecognisable in the Aurangzeb look. After a long time a good non Mughal centric bollywood movie which is fairly well made. Must watch for Vicky Kaushal's acting. He is way ahead of every Kapoors and Khans today.

Dhoom Dhaam on Netflix.

A largely forgettable movie, save for same decent acting bits from Pratik Gandhi and Yami Gautam in between. Watch only if you have nothing better to do!

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched CHHAAVA at PVR Jio BKC. 11 p.m. show on a Monday was housefull.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but the movie failed to project the grandeur of Sambhaji in the true sense. Sambhaji was much more than just a warrior leader. Since the movie is an adapation of the book by author Shivaji Sawant, the makers had a golden opportunity to present a multi-faceted and well-rounded Sambhaji. Unfortunately, it may or may not have been an editorial call, as the makers might have wanted to restrict the runtime.

Vicky Kaushal has done a remarkable job and his efforts are eminently visible in his portrayal of a legend on screen. Expect all the awards to go to Vicky this year.

Rashmika was an absolutely shabby choice for portraying Yesubai; her dialogue-delivery is heavily accented and that is a major downer. This role was designed for a Mrunal Thakur or Sharvari Wagh, who could have pulled it off with élan.

Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb was a bold choice, but turned out to be a fantastic one! The heavy prosthetics make him virtually unrecognisable, but the way he has channelised the fury and demonic vibe of Aurangzeb through just his eyes, deserves a standing ovation.

The rest of the supporting cast does their bit well.

The music is the real downer of what could have been an otherwise scintillating spectacle. Don't hate me for this, but A.R.Rahman is not the legend he once was! You can't have a Maratha movie like Chhaava sound and feel like Jodhaa Akbar. The BGM and soundtracks fall flat, taking the aggression and valour down with them. This was a movie squarely meant for Ajay-Atul, wonder how the makers made such an uninspiring choice!

Ultimately, except the concluding sequence of the movie, the rest of the film fails to resonate and/or evoke strong emotions. This should have been a larger-than-life spectacle, but ends up falling short of achieving the greatness it was destined for. That said, if you are planning to watch the film, please do so only in a cinema; because if you are planning to watch this at home on OTT, this will just end up appearing bland.

There is no vulgar but some scenes may depend. I somehow liked the movie, timepass and comedy timing is good. Reminded me of some of old Bollywood comedy action movie.

I resonate with every word of what you said. Forget the music, the bigger disappointment was BGM. Completely bland. I was a die-hard fan of Rahman, but I have moved on from him in the last few years. My childhood was joyful due to his music and I thank him for that.

Coming back to the movie, I think the movie was supposed to be a bit longer. There is no emotional connection with most of the characters barring a few. The movie will be a blockbuster due to the out-of-the-world performance from Vicky Kaushal and the somber yet scintillating last 40 minutes of the movie. These two points make it a must-watch in theatre.

One has to wonder how easy it was for our historians to easily omit such great stories to be taught for us in our childhood. The intellectual dishonesty of our historians and the education department for 70 years stands exposed quite starkly!

The Mehta Boys Amazon Prime

I concur with every word that fellow member @naveen.raju has said about the movie. Boman Irani has clearly shown what he is capable of in terms of acting and what the movie industry is missing out on by not utilising his immense talent properly. That he is also the producer, director and the writer of the movie tells us how he wanted to tell the story to us.

Avinash Tiwary, Shreya Chowdhary and my personal favourite Siddhartha Basu have done their roles well enough to hold your attention. The impact of acting great Barry John shines throughout the film. But all said, it’s the director Boman Irani who towers above all. The clever use of camera angles is one of the highlights of the movie. The movie tugs your heart strings at the right places. I hope we get to see more of him as director and the one who can tell the stories he wants us audience to see. Highly recommended watch.

Off topic but movies are the last medium to learn about history. It’s a director’s medium and the creative liberties that one takes. I am not talking about the rest of the factors that determine the making of a movie. In the end, every commercial movie is all about making money.

There is nothing below-the-belt; but some scenes may be a visually a little bold depending on your/family taste. I myself watched it with family without any concerns really.
