Animal
Rating: 2.5/5

The first half of the move was simply excellent. I am still in awe of the first half of the movie. The visuals, BGM's, performances by actors everything was top notch. However, the second half was a snooze fest. There was no emotion between father and son. It was dragged unnecessarily. I almost fell asleep in the second half.

A must watch 1st half, but 2nd half, well, not so much.

Animal : 3/5

As Sai mentioned, 1st half was superb.

Fight scenes are dragged for too long. At some point one feels will it ever end?

Ranbir is outstanding as usual. Did not agree with few scenes where women were been addressed. Could have been a wonderful film.

Must watch for Ranbir fans. Will never be able to forget his character.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Animal - 4 (For the first half) / 5
I was fully invested in the first half (though the opening did not gel with me), but the movie spiralled down in the second half, turning into a yawn fest. No doubt it's a riveting narrative encompassing power dynamics, deceit, and familial bonds, but its a 2 hour movie at best (Not the current stretched 3.2 hours).

The screenplay was great, intricately weaving a complex and absorbing story line. The seamless integration of a compelling background score, harmonised with songs seamlessly interwoven into the narrative. Audio experience was scintillating.

Ranbir Kapoor delivers a tour de force performance, showcasing his acting versatility. His portrayal of the central character adds nuanced layers to the storyline, capturing the essence of the character's journey with finesse. Anil Kapoor, in a role demanding both nuance and authority, delivers a standout performance, reaffirming his commanding on-screen presence. While Bobby Deol's performance is commendable, a deeper exploration of his character could have further enriched the narrative. He isn't spoken in any of the reviews but a Marathi actor Babloo Srivastav killed it in the limited screen time he enjoyed. So did the arms dealer.

The cinematography and production design warrant accolades for crafting a visually captivating world that seamlessly aligns with the film's narrative. The director's vision is palpable in every frame, guiding the audience through a labyrinth of emotions, suspense, and unforeseen twists.

Watch it in theatres for the immersive sound.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Animal - 3.5/5

Just watched animal and kind of liked it. It's a out & out Ranbir Show ! Acting, action, comedy, drama, he just nailed everything in this movie. And look the part too

Coming to movie
  • First half - excellent
  • Second half - a bit dragged
  • Action - Enough of it , some places a bit too much
  • Drama - Yes, in good amount
  • Alpha male heroism - More than required. Toxic & Unnecessary at places
  • Charector development - Only for Ranbir
  • Blood bath and gun shoots - More than enough
  • Comedy - In bits and pieces, some are placed unnecessary though
  • Logic - None
  • Entertainment - Yes, in good amount
  • Strong villian - Hmm, I don't think so. The under utilised Bobby Deol.
  • Length of the movie - Bit too much, feels dragged in second half.
  • Cringe scenes ? - Yes, many.
  • Worth watching ? - Yes
  • Family movie ? - Do not watch with kids.

Who shouldn't watch ? - Those who seek logic in movies, who wants to connect with all the characters, who don't like action, who don't like gore, who can't stand toxic masculinity on screen etc.

PS: I'm done with the 'Big Gun' scenes in recent action movies. It's just getting irritating now. Hope this trend dies soon

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Sam Bahadur 4/5

One of the finest performance by Vicky Kaushal. He kept our interests in a relatively slow movie. The screenplay is slow and has focused a bit more on Sam's personal life than needed. Vicky's efforts to understand the Field Marshal including his mannerisms, accent and style is commendable (actually I don't know an adjective to describe it) Fatima as Indira is OK & Sanya as Sam's wife is decent too. There was one interesting fact shown in the movie which none of us were aware of (not revealing it here)

If you like knowing behind the scenes of our Wars till 1971 then you must watch this movie. As Sam says "wars are not fought only on the frontier"

Sadly all awards for acting will go to SRK however Vicky truly deserves all of it. Katrina has bought an uptrend stock which can give 10X returns soon

Unless you are being sarcastic, stating that the definition of "finest cinema" is Kill Bill is stretching it too far dont you think ?

As pure spectacle, as a lesson in the use of light and color within frame, I think Kill Bill deserves that epithet.

It’s often touted as all style, little substance, but then I guess that’s what Tarantino was going for, along with his obsessive fetishistic portrayal of Thurman.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Animal : 1.5/5.
Wasted 300 precious rupees.

Out of 3.2 hours, more than 2.5 hours of torture. Many times felt to leave the cinema hall, but friends wanted to stay back. Some good acting by Ranbir and few others but overall bakwaas story. Last time in Kabir Singh the hero didn't have any purpose, he ust give in to the hormones' demand. This time apna hero has litres of adrenaline in his body, entitlement of best alpha male who whatever says the heroine she agrees and runs away with him, plus best money, power and a great purpose to revenge the attack on his father. All of this combined will torture you so much that you will make a resolution in your life not to watch Sandeep Vanga's movies again.
There's a message for USA in the movie, instead of waging wars on any country, they should just inform the heros of Sandeep Vanga's movies that his family is attacked by say Iran or Afghanistan, then the hero will just go and kill the whole country.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Sam Bahadur.
Rating: 4 out of 5.

Watched Sam Bahadur movie today. Proud of Indian Army and also a proud Parsi.
The movie revolves around the life of India’s first Field Marshal, who had military career of over 4 decades.
The highlights of the film was Vicky Kaushal‘s acting. Thankfully other actors did not do the role.
For anyone to actually understand the finer points of the story, one needs to the know the brief history of India right from 1942 to 1971 as the movie fast forwards from one event to another. Hence the screenplay could have been better and some important events like sending the Army to Kashmir in 1947, the surrender of Pakistan Army in East Pakistan etc., could have been better.

What was missing in the film is this: A Field Marshal never retires and serves in office in uniform until his death. This rank was awarded to him in 1973. He continued to draw the pension of a General, a small stipend, and it was only on his deathbed that the government gave him a cheque of over 1.16 crores as arrears. This was sanctioned by none other than #APJAbdulKalam, the then President of India, who personally visited Sam at the Army Hospital in #Wellington. Guess what Sam did with the money ? He donated it to the Army Relief Fund.

After he died, it was a national shame that he was not given an appropriate funeral. On June 28, 2008, when he passed away, the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister did not deem it necessary to attend his funeral. The Army chief was away in Moscow. The national flag was not lowered to half mast and the government’s explanation was that it had “forgotten” to add Field Marshal to the Warrant of Precedence!

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Sam Bahadur - 5/5 for execution, and if viewed as just another movie, 2/5 for doing justice to the man himself.

The movie is exceptionally well done - everything is just right, and Vicky Kaushal's performance is marvellous. Even the supporting cast is brilliant.

But that's that.

Sadly, the movie has rushed through all the major event in his life as if to check boxes on including them. Every incident/event that took place in his life - be it as an individual, or a part of the Armed Forces - is given a formality-sake couple of minutes, and then you move to the next. His appointment as Field Marshal got maybe 20-30 seconds?

Very unfortunately, the movie doesn't grip you or get you involved, the way say, Raazi or Uri did. It was quite symbolic in how the audience reacted during/after the movie - no overt expressions of patriotism, no raising slogans or even clapping - everyone just walked of.

There was may be just a couple of pictures/clips of actual footage - those could have really made a difference, especially during the credit roll. I understand that this is a movie so there is the obvious constraint of time, but this is no ordinary topic for a movie.

As others have said, so many aspects of his life have not been included. If you are aware of him, or even read the Wikipedia page on him, you'd feel immensely shortchanged when you watch the film.

All said and done, do watch the film.

Exactly the same thoughts. I sat through the entire credit roll expecting they would show real pics and events of his life. Sadly there were none. Not even the legendary pic of him in the office (given below)

Mission Raniganj

The Hindi Movies Thread-1.jpg

I wouldn't call this brilliant but was a good watch. VFX was poor on few occasions but doesnt really bother with the viewing pleasure. Akshay was pretty good in this role and other actors supported him really well. Wish they had given more details of the real person during the credits.
Also, the song at the end was totally unnecessary.

Rating - 3.5/5 (Netflix). Recommended.

This was one Akshay starrer that I actually watched, all his movies are a big no no for me, this one was a refreshing change, it was good the makers showed the pictures of the real Mr Gill in the credits, something which the makers of Sam so blatantly forgot, even Pippa had the pics, this is my only grouse with the movie.
