Rating a well deserved 4/5 !

Watched "Dangal" today. Review comments would be similar from my side. I would rate 4/5. All the actors have given good performance. Would rate better than Chak de India - just, maybe this is Aamir khan film.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Slightly OT

Dhaakad is my nominee for 'Song of the year'. The song perfectly portrays Geeta's growth as a wrestler and has lovely beats and lyrics. Overall arrangement is also excellent. Most importantly, even being a rap of sort, it is excellent. I hate all the rap (Baadshah, Honey Singh, Eminem, etc...) that is produced, not only in India but anywhere, because the lyrics are mostly trash. But Dhaakad breaks that logic, and does it really well.

Agree with you 100% - a little bit of trimming here and there would have helped. But the movie delivers near 100% on what it sets out to - simple, straightforward, heartwarming show (helped by some good performances)

Brilliant one time watch.

Not much in terms of nuances for a second watch - except the scenes of the last tournament, just for the stunning editing

Dangal = 4.9 stars

Where did the 0.1 go ? You guys remember the winning moments of Pursuit of Happyness and Chak De ? I feel that Aamir could not portray "that" triumph moment and the relief the way the Will Smith did.

To be fair, the director had no scope to capture those moments. If I discuss anything more, it will reveal the plot. Zip.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched Dangal

The first half of the movie is amazing. It really encapsulates the struggles of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters. Also, important social issues are dealt with humour. The performances of each and every cast member is brilliant and the wrestling scenes are totally realistic.

As other have said that the movie is predictable but, I feel that's the nature of any sports-based movie. The real issue with the film is the forced melodrama in the second half which is totally unnecessary. I think it was a great movie up until the last 30-40 minutes of the movie. It's obviously better than other hindi movies churned out throughout the year but, it is not as good as some of Aamir Khan's previous movies.

Rate it ~4/5.

+1 to the above, AK delivers yet again and by jove what a punch! There is hardly anything I can fault the movie with and have already watched it twice.

I guess the movie and the hype surrounding it has made some view it ever more critically, but if I don't give Dangal a 5/5 then I dont know which movie deserves full marks.

I felt is was not just the movie itself, but kudos to the makers to bring sensitive topics to the fore and to release a movie with similar storylines / sports within a couple of months and still manage to deliver on all aspects as well as make it a commercial hit is no mean feat!!

A full 5/5 from my side!

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Direction and the art of storytelling is NOT hereditary. As good as Yash Chopra was (think DDLJ, Lamhe, Trishul, Darr good - only to name a few), Aditya Chopra has been a disappointment. Mohabbatein was bad, while Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was average.

Befikre is a disaster. Music and the lead cast are the only reason it gets 1 star from me. Everything else like the story, screenplay, supporting cast etc is below par and the movie drags. Not even a one time watch.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Dangal is a great movie except for misses as far as I am concerned. I think the last scene where Mahavir is lead to a room on a pretext and locked was in my opinion pretty unnecessary. The national anthem was fine but then "bharat mata ki jai" right after was again a bit unnecessary. That apart the film is pretty well done. The wrestling scenes are actually pretty realistic and I was at the edge of my seat even knowing that it was just acting. Gets a 4/5 from me.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Dangal : 3.5/5

I know many will bash me for this rating especially Amir khan fans. Reasons for the rating given below ..

1 Pt. for good acting by all the character actors.
1 Pt. for the good editing and direction
1 Pt. for the story
0.5 Pt. for Amir Khan's acting

-1 Pt. for the length of the film
-0.5 Pt. for the songs

The movie could have done well with a few scenes cut down. The wrestling match against the Nigerian could have been shortened considerably.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched a hindi movie after a long long time. Dangal is a simple and a brilliantly made movie. The only peeve I have is the length of the movie.

Everyone delivers, especially young Geeta and Babita. Even the cousin's acting was fantastic. Aamir being Aamir was exceptional. I had hoped that it ditch a bit of melodrama but, guess you cannot truly take that away.

Overall pretty much a must watch if this is going to only be watching a few hindi movies.

Dangal - 4.5/5

I have a thing for sports movies, and this one struck all the right chords! Unlike all Indian sports movies I've watched (very few, I know!), the wrestling scenes have turned out real well! No unnecessary slow motions, bollywood-moves, close up's with sweat dripping etc. Aamir Khan has done an excellent job as always! The younger Phogat girls have done a wonderful job as well! I'd definitely call it a must watch!

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Dangal : 5/5

I'm pretty stingy with ratings but this is one movie that deserves full marks for the story-line and overall execution. There is hardly anything to fault in the movie and I wont be surprised if this movie takes away a long list of awards

Aamir Khan was brilliant in the emotional scenes and he can really strike the chord for such scenes and his physical transformation is simply unbelievable

And, unlike other members unhappy with length of movie. I had no qualms as it felt perfectly right length and good that like a Sallu movie they didn't add any unnecessary romantic soundtracks that would have taken the movie off it's stride

Many people ask this question

Is it as good as Sultan (Sallu Movie)?

My 2 cents : Sultan just pales in comparison or rather fades into oblivion when you pit it against Dangal even though Salman is my favorite hero and i like him better than Aamir. But, Dangal is a lot superior movie from all angles

Aamir and Geetha stood out in the movie

Wrestling scenes looked as if watching a true wrestling match. I particularly liked the fight between Geetha and Aamir. Lovely picturization

I just wished they showed a quick re-wind of some of the moves as they were really professional and would have loved to see it in a slow-mo

I hate to say this because I never said it before. I dont mind watching it again in theatre (never did this in last 20+ years)

Go watch it !!!
