I rate it 5/5. Saw it last night, brilliant plot, acting, sets everything. Its more dialogue than action but for pure engagement, it was brilliant

Dont miss!

Val Kilmer for me is Chris Shiherlis in Heat (1995). Those golden locks, and that shootout - teenage me was in awe.

I believe military experts use this scene/video from Heat of him doing magazine reloads in their training videos to show how it should be done. The man had such dedication to his craft to perfect this for the movie.

RIP.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Speaking of Oscars, I watched the much nominated THE SUBSTANCE 4/5.

Was blown away by the concept of an ageing hollywood actress who uses a 'black market substance' that creates another version of her, so she can continue to be under the arc lights. Later it turns into a battle to remain alive.

Demi Moore rocked the part. But let me warn you that there is plenty of gore, and I couldn't 'stomach' few scenes.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

The great sadness that comes with the passing of these wonderful actors. Too many greats to mention.

Gene Hackman. What a legend he was.
Arguably his greatest was Mississippi Burning
A Bridge Too Far as General Sosokowski.
First class films too numerous to mention.

Val Kilmer. Yes IceMan and the Saint and Jim Morrison.
But also, as Doc Holliday in Tombstone, a role which he played superlatively but for which the Oscar eluded him.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched 3 good movies this weekend, all in prime videos.

Puncture (2011) - Drama/Thriller : 3.5/5

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-images-20250405t190259.764.jpeg

A legal drama based on a true story. The movie follows Mike Weiss (Chris Evans), a brilliant attorney battling a major healthcare conspiracy while dealing with his own drug addiction.

Positives:
  • Chris Evans gives a grounded but strong and emotional performance.
  • Compelling real-life story healthcare corruption.
  • Solid performances by supporting cast.

Negatives:
  • Some side characters feel underdeveloped.
  • The pacing dips slightly here and there.
  • Could have delved deeper into the systemic issues it raises.

Land of Bad (2024) - Thriller/Military action - 3/5

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-images-20250405t190010.438.jpeg

This movie is an action-packed military thriller, which is the story of an elite special ops military team on a high-stakes rescue mission, aided by a drone operator (Liam Hemsworth) and a veteran air controller (Russell Crowe).

Positives:
  • Good action sequences with great cinematography with some great gun sequences
  • Russell Crowe shines in tech-heavy role.
  • Good use of drone warfare as a plot element.
  • Pacing keeps the tension high.

Negatives:
  • Thin character development;
  • Some cheesy one liners
  • Cliché and predictable storyline as almost all military movies.

Avengement (2019) - Crime / Action - 4/5

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-avengement.jpg

This was a lucky find and a hidden gem. A brutal and bloody tale of revenge set in London. Scott Adkins stars as a hardened convict who escapes custody to confront those who betrayed him.

Positives:
  • Intense, raw performance from Scott Adkins.
  • Intense & Raw fight scenes.
  • Good direction and a strong revenge arc.
  • Surprisingly good making for a low-budget action film.

Negatives:
  • Flashback-heavy storytelling can feel repetitive.
  • Some supporting performances are a bit uneven.

Great to see this movie listed here. I discovered this movie a few years ago and I was super impressed with it even though I am not a hard core action movie fan.

Scott Adkins fight scenes left me gaping. He is superb and should get more good movies instead of the B grade movies he gets casted in mostly.

In fact, I saw this movie twice. Maybe, I will check it out again for some of the fight scenes in jail and in the bar.

4.5/5

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

A Real Pain

A comedy drama about two cousins visiting Poland to honor their grandmother's Polish roots, centred around holocaust. A slow, at-times-funny-at-times-poignant movie that is a decent watch on a slow day. FYI: Kieran Culkin won an Oscar for his role (supporting actor).

4/5

Side note: this reminded me of Ricky Gervais joking to Winslet that the most sure shot way of winning an Oscar was to do a holocaust movie.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

My son started pestering me about this movie almost 3-4 months back.

We decided to go to the 4Dx experience at PVR.

His mom and sister refused to come along.

The theater was disappointing. The tickets were seriously expensive but the seats were stained. The show was supposed to start at 12:10 but they played advertisements and trailers till 12:30.

I don't know which idiot decided the trailers for movies like Sinners is appropriate for a movie that has a target audience of young boys.
If anyone from PVR is reading this, reconsider what trailers are shown based on the movie that will be screened.

The first 30 mins of the movie were dry and boring for my middle aged brain.

But then the kids started laughing.
Some character will come on screen and the kids will start screaming out names.

There were only boys accompanied by their parents in the audience.
It was full "paisa vasool" for these kids.

If your son likes this minecraft stuff, take him. He will love it and you will enjoy sitting next to his super excited screaming and shouting.

Clearly this movie is catering to a different generation. Some of us are caught up in multiple ones.

I asked my brother if he wanted to see the Minecraft movie over the weekend. His retort was

Minecraft? Is that the game that existed in earlier versions of Microsoft OS?

(If you know what game he’s referring to, then you are part of that generation; same as @bblost)

Mickey 17 - 5/5

I'm still reeling from the experience of watching Mickey 17. This film is nothing short of phenomenal. From the opening scenes, it bombards you with a plethora of themes, messages, and emotions, leaving you wondering how to process it all.

Bong Joon-Ho delivered yet another masterpiece that is both unique and unexpected.

G20 - 1/5 Amazon Prime

On the lines of "Air Force One" starring Harrison Ford as a kick ass president, this one is absolute disappointment.

G20 is a film that desperately wants to be a high-stakes political thriller but instead plays out like a tedious, self-important mess.
