The Marvels - 2/5

In a time where the words "Superhero Fatigue" is thrown around a lot, The Marvels just like some other Superhero movies from these past few years did nothing to bring back the love for the genre.

The attempt to intertwine the stories of multiple superheroes feels forced and lacks the cohesion that has made previous MCU films so enjoyable.

Movie seemed more of a "Chick Flick" than a "Superhero Flick".

Movie recommendation: The Art of Racing in the Rain
Available on: Hotstar

You won't regret watching this film, especially if you love dogs. It was truly heart-warming and touching. It is captivating from the beginning to the end, and a movie you can definitely watch with your family.
Note: It is definitely a tear-jerker!

Calibre*(2018): A totally unexpected, twisted movie that, by the time it ends, leaves you mentally exhausted and torn. The suspense develops in a scary way. The brilliant cast and superb screenplay make it worth watching. Go for it without any doubt.

Argylle - 3/5

A spy/ comedy flick featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, etc.

Went in with zero expectations and the first thing I noticed that, along with missus and I, there were only 8 other folks in the hall. On a Sunday afternoon.

The movie is a standard spy flick with tons of twists thrown in and becomes ridiculous in the last 30 mins.
Watch if you like spy movies but please don't expect much.

A million miles away on Amazon Prime

Its based on José M. Hernández's autobiography, Reaching for the stars. He was the first migrant farmer boy who became an astronaut in NASA. The movie also shows a bit of Kalpana Chawla(referred as K.C). While IMDB rating is 7.3, I personally loved it. A nice light watch

Rating : 4/5

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Platoon (1987)

My father had a CD of the movie Platoon even before I was born (he keeps his CDs, books, and childhood car toys very close to his heart, just beside the lungs) and I rediscovered the disc after many years. I asked my him if we could watch it together. But we found that something must be wrong with the disc and he gave me the task of bringing it back to life.

I did some research on CDs and found that in most cases rubbing some toothpaste on the surface may work for older ones. So I whipped out some Colgate and a microfiber cloth and prepared to give the disc the spa treatment of its life. I rubbed, scrubbed, massaged, and maybe even washed the CD with toothpaste. But unfortunately the thing was scarred forever.

So one day when I found Platoon on Prime, I instantly recognized the picture on the CD I had once closed up in my old tiffin box, never to be opened again. I was overjoyed and we sat down to watch the movie that night itself.

I really love war movies. I don't know what it is, but there is something strangely more realistic about them than any other story and it completely draws me in. Platoon follows an educated young man who volunteers for the Vietnam war of the 1960's. It is loosely based on Oliver Stone's experiences of war. He directed the film.

Chris, played by Charlie Sheen, pushed through the dense forests, thick in disease and death, of Vietnam, to fight someone else's war. But more than that, he sees his comrades, kill and be killed. They are from unheard of towns, tucked away in the land of opportunity, like many of the soldiers then. He sees people be tortured, and he saw men lose their sanity and watched people turn into animals. Or, in other words, soldiers in war.

This film brings to light the brutal inequality of life. It tells us that kind of people that were drafted were anything but random - whose lives, according to the ones in power, are less valuable than people who we considered more important. Such an insignificant thing like the class someone is in determined life or death. And making it out alive did not make up for the things you see, and the things you've done in war. And the fact is, war is just another pastime for people in power, just something to worry about and try to win. It is just a matter of their position for them. Not a matter of life and death.

I totally recommend this film. Charlie Sheen, Willem Defoe, Tom Berenger and everyone else did beautiful acting. I don't think this is the best family movie, but there is a lot to learn from it. The cinematography was also very good. It is heartrending, so better keep a handkerchief handy!

Hope this helped!

Hunt for the Wilderpeople*(2016): A genuinely exceptional family movie that is appropriate for children, biting enough for grown-ups, and captivating enough to hold everyone's attention. This entertaining short journey tugs in a lot of different directions, but it never loses momentum. One of the best from Waititi.

If you are fan of music then I would even add the movie The Blues Brothers to this list somewhere at the top. Lot of cars in this one and lot of songs.

Ronin probably has the best chase scene ever filmed. Speaking of those scenes, I also love the extra dramatic chase scene in Matrix Reloaded. The destruction is glorious.

However, hands down pure driving film without dialogues has to be a short film named C’était un rendez-vous. Still gives me chills despite it being in 360p. I would appreciate if someone finds a remastered copy of this.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Have watched every movie in that list except Drive My Car. Which OTT?

Rush is my favourite of this lot.

Why Gone in 60 Seconds and The Italian Job not in the list? Blasphemous, right?

The Marvels

Streaming: Hotstar

I have not seen a worse movie than this one from the Marvel Franchisee. The movie is so cluttered with plots one starts to lose the main plot. Somehow could not connect to the movie neither the stars. There are some ridiculous back ground characters, a musical sequence thrown in and tons of cats all around the place making the movie look a lot childish.

To get over the movie, I watched the End Game again to regain my faith in Marvel.
