Bird Box on Netflix

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock intercuts between two time periods—about five years after the end of the world and in the first days when everything collapsed. The movie never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.

3.5/5

Watched this yesterday. Thought it to be like Salt, but it turned out to be quite an underwhelming movie. The pace is pretty slow, storyline is weak, too much of shooting has been done in dark. Not happy at all. The end could have been better. Overall a 2 stars.

Lot of loose ends and poor acting. It does actually start on an interesting note and just goes down the hill every passing moment. You consistently start questioning actors' actions and decisions as the movie progresses.

If you avoid it, nothing of value will be missed.

1/5.
I usually check IMDB before watching anything.
This time I made the mistake of not doing it.
This is the crappiest movie with no logic and story whatsoever I have seen in a long time

I will Rate it 0

Free Guy : 3.5 / 5

It's so interesting that script writers are able to figure out new iterations of an idea (conflux of the real and virtual worlds) that's been tried and tested so many times. Well, the USP of this iteration is the subtle (kind of puns but much better) jokes that are splattered all over the movie. Some of them are so good that you don't even realize that you are smiling at that funny moment (e.g. Captain America reference and the next immediate scene).

And that's the only reason one should really go watch this movie. My only grouse? The absolutely delightful Taika Waititi should have got a much bigger share of screen time. And Ryan Reynolds needs to drop the Deadpool tone in other movies.

Free Guy:

Was a good one time watch. Would rate it 3.5/5 for that. Ryan and Jodie really work their magic on this and dude from Stranger things as well.

Some of the names listed in the credits did make me go back and revisit those scenes

Cry Macho:

Clint Eastwood at 91 years still has amazing screen presence. Watch the movie just for him. 3/5.

No Time To Die 3.5/5
The narrative was choppy but I was 'stirred' no doubt. It's a different Bond with the character 'shaken' to the core. The opening sequence lives up to past moves but is not a 'Bond' moment. This villain was the weakest of all I felt. Don't go with high expectations. I'm not saying more here, lest I spoil it for you. Catch it to say your 'byes' for the Best bond ever (In my eyes) - Daniel Craig, who enthralled us for 16 long years. Big shoes to fill, for the next incumbent

No Time To Die: 4 out of 5

The movie is gripping and good. But classic Bond is lost amidst the onslaught of superheroes in the last two decades. How do you introduce Bond to the new generation and mass market the flick to the much techsavy and younger moviegoers seems to push the producers to pack a punch with invincible macho man aura around double ooh.

I would rather prefer Bond to be a sauve womanizing cloak and dagger spy with a word play that would bury the generation of one liners. A touch of classics is what I miss most in the new age Bond movies that is distant and apart from what Ian Fleming intended. Lucky is my generation who have experienced or have memory of good old Churchill, Vietnam and the Cold War time period that appriciates Bond who could be someone sitting next to you on a train journey, with a briefcase by his side and gently reading his daily.

Damn, I was hoping they would have corrected that. Most of the newer Bond films suffer from having a villain who's too neutral, bit wishy-washy. Casino Royale and Skyfall were the exceptions with a truly menacing 'main-bad-guy'. In Spectre, I thought the henchman was more memorable than the main villain! Still, looking forward to watching this one. Thanks for the heads-up! Going to be my first movie in a theater since the covid shutdowns, awesome that it'll be a Bond film!

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

^^ Bond movies have always lacked strong villains (not aware of Sean Connery era villains) - the villain with the most dynamic and strong personalities was Xenia Onatopp/Famke Janssen (in Golden Eye) and Raoul Silva/Javier Bardem (Skyfall); however they do not come close to the villains of other series (e.g. Heath Ledger/Joker, Karl Urban/Russian assassin in Bourne Supremacy) who hold their ground extremely well.

Well - I hope to see the last Bond movie of Craig just for the pure ruthlessness he brought to the character, especially the first movie (his best work out of the lot IMO).

I wanted to counter with waltz's blofeld.,but thinking back, I really don't recall much that stands out in spectre. Yes, famke janssen for sure. She outshone Sean Bean.

She's probably been the best villain in a Bond movie so far! Hmmm, interesting, perhaps that's the direction they should take more often instead of debating whether the next Bond should be a woman- a strong female villain who is more than a match for Bond. (That's also been done in a couple of films already, though only through the 'henchwoman' role.)

The pre-Brosnan era films did have some memorable villains, Maximillian Largo (Never say never again), Goldfinger (classic), and Christopher Lee come to mind. I think the later movies, by trying too hard to be more modern- showcasing how good and bad are really ambiguous, they lost the 'all-out-evil villain' aspect of the old films. But that's what made the bad guys bad. Javier Bardem was talented enough to play that balance just right though. Tom Hiddleston might be another who could pull that off in a future Bond movie. Or a total unknown talent. (Just an armchair critic/Bond fan's opinion.)

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Along with the Villains in the older Bond movies, the henchmen really stood out.

Jaws from Spy who loved me (my first bond movie) and moonraker

Oddjob from Goldfinger

Gobinda from Octopussy

Baron Samedi from Live and Let Die

Yeah, i watched Roger Moore before watching Sean Connery

And lets not forget, the amazing lairs of the villains.

Thanks a lot, I just watched 'Its a mad mad...world' and what a brilliant and 3+ hours of pure fun it was. Comedy at its very best without any irritating background music emphasisizing comedy. And it is from the 1960's, truly timeless. Somebody give an oscar to that MIL in the movie

Are there sequels to this movie?

Not to my knowledge. This is a stand alone comedy classic.

My personal favourite from the cast is Terry Thomas - the suave English conman. I think he has killed it in this movie. What brilliant character acting. He was a very famous thespian and a character actor, who spent his last days in a sad state afflicted with Parkinson's disease.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

No Time to Die—3.5/5.

Watched the movie in imax 3D on Thursday earlier this week when only 50% occupancy was allowed.

The movie is visually great, and Daniel Craig carries on his style, full on action and yet emotional and vulnerable. I haven’t watched much of the older bond movies, and I always thought Pierce Brosnan was sort of the perfect template for James Bond. But when Daniel Craig was cast as the 007, everyone had apprehensions. But right from the first movie he has established his very own take on the character. Raw, vulnerable, swift and what not!

So the last movie where Daniel Craig plays James Bond, I thought it was well made, good actors all around, and high on action scenes.

What was a big turn off for me was some of the aspects which seem so outdated! A bio weapon, a creepy villain, and lastly the location of the climax. I mean, how do all villains since the 70’s and 80’s find those secluded islands? Just lacked creativity in some way.

Not to take away anything from the movie itself, my 9 year old son, my wife and I absolutely loved the movie. I’m also sad that this is Daniel Craig’s last one as the 007, but I guess there needs to be a refresh. And no offence, but I just hope the next 007 is not an Afro-American woman, changes shouldn’t be done just for the sake of inclusivity. Some characters are left as what they are.
