Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Finally watched Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
4.5/5
Great movie! The best one I have watched in a while. Unlike Inception, it doesn't get confusing at times even though they have a similar concept. It contains a little profanity so not a family movie. I think the biggest selling point was Tom Cruise. Must watch.

How come Inception has a similar concept? It was about dreams and manipulation of them and Edge of Tomorrow is about Time loop. Completely different concept.

Also if anyone has not seen please avoid 22 jump street. First wasn't funny and this again fails.

You should try Danny Boyle's Trance, then.

Inception had a bit of sci-fi about it, but this one is similar, only that they use hypnosis.
Stars James mcavoy and Rosario Dawson, and that French villain guy from one of ocean's films.
Brilliantly done.

5/5

I have seen it. It's a very good movie. Again, it's a different concept. I don't think Inception can be compared as it was a masterclass. There were so many tiny details in that movie which boggles your mind. And the open ending was superb.
Btw, anyone interested in seeing Trance must know it's got a lot of nudity so not a family movie.

Lucy

The matrix and limitless met transcendence with the black widow.
I honestly thought it would be more of a thinker, but it's an out and out masala flick.
Scarlett Johansson is gorgeous, and the action is slick.
4/5

Actually Edge of tomorrow is very similar to Source code - that was an absolutely brilliant movie and even better than Edge of tomorrow. Another similar movie but slightly older is Deja Vu. The time relapse theme is kind of getting repetitive now with multiple movies!

Master and commander :Far side of the world.

"Fantastic" comes to mind having watched this movie. Russell crowe and Paul Bettany have acted brilliantly. Story is about a one on one naval battle that involves strategy, planning and trickery. Beautifully scripted and executed. A small twist is included but a semblance of it is provided beforehand enabling the viewers to guess. Really e with a watch. Deliciously enjoyable.
4/5.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

"The Company Men" - a 2011 movie starring Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, etc. It is about the life of three men who have been laid off from work, and how each of their situations and circumstances are different. (I was able to connect with this movie as I was an employee of Lehman Brothers in NY when it went bankrupt in 2008.)

I would rate this 4/5. A must watch.

I loved that movie too. I could relate a lot to character played by Ben Affleck, but yeah in very different circumstances.

Movie: Deliver us from Evil
3.5/5

Another movie in the Exorcism genre. But it is not as good as the Rites (starring Anthony Hopkins) or the Exorcism of Emily Rose.

I would rate this movie a 2.5.
The director is Scott Derrickson whose other movies include Sinister, Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Barring the Zoo scene, the movie pretty much bored me.
The climax had way too much religious-ness thrown into it.

Also watched Annabelle - 3.5/5
The movie is supposed to be about the Annabelle doll which we see locked in a glass cage at the Lorraines house along with other "souvenirs" in the movie Conjuring.
Quite a few jump-scare scenes in the movie. Decent story but the ending was too stupid!
That basement scene gives me the chills!

We did see quite a few from the B&W era in the last few months. Looks like you've seen quite a bit Hitchcock movies. You've missed Rear Window and Strangers on a Train that are very good. Spellbound is pretty good too, Ingrid Bergman is a good excuse to see this

Few other recommendations:

- Duck Soup
- 12 Angry Men
- Witness for the Prosecution
- Double Indemnity
- Dial M for Murder
- Dr. Strangelove
- Its a Wonderful Life
