re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched 'Skyfall'. The movie wasn't bad but there was something missing. Was expecting to see the latest DBS or a Vanquish but there was a DB5 instead.
Maybe they should have extended the shower sequence!

Yeah me too felt the same , the movie is good. There is not much story line and twists and turns were missing. James Bond is a spy , I wish there was more intrigue in the movie.

Safe House

Starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington , its about a CIA safe house caretaker and his charge, an ex-CIA rogue agent who is actually trying to escape.
Movie is shot in South Africa and has solid performances from both the men. Good action sequences too.

Rating : 3/5.

PS : Dont miss the Indica's on the road!

SkyFall - Vintage Bond.
Probably the best Bond film ever.
I am a long time aficionado who owns every single book written by Ian Fleming as well as a lot of other volumes about the James Bond phenomenon. I also own every single James Bond film each of which I have watched many times.
Yes, including the infamous Casino Royale with David Niven playing Bond which was a spoof more than anything else.
Skyfall lacks to some extent, the "intrigue" element as some have said but what it lacks in intrigue, it more than makes up in the softly sinister character of the villain. More an anti-hero with a fairly justifiable cause for his persecution complex and desire for revenge.
I like the lack of gadgetry, a la the earlier Connery films. I was very pleased to see dear old BMT 216A (the Aston DB5) again!
I like that Craig's portrayal in this film is no more the pure physical Bond, but a slightly tempered emotional Bond too.
Brilliant touch, the SkyFall Estate setting with James being of the "family of local Lairds" etc.
Superb cinematography - the starkly paralysed "ghost town/ island" with lively period music blaring out from those ancient cone speakers! Bizarre and sinister at the same time! Superb potrayal of Malory by Ralph Fiennes - excellently set up for the next M.
A very modern, very stylish yet sinister take on James Bond.
Of course there is no "book" or other reference to compare this storyline and screenplay to, but in my opinion, it is certainly worthy of even Ian Fleming's own acceptance and praise.

I too liked Skyfall.
Bond is now using his brains and muscles more than gadgets.
Also, women are no longer portrayed the way they used to be.

I couldn't help but draw some parallels between Rodriguez and The Joker from The Dark Knight.

I watched Skyfall last weekend and I liked it. I wonder why people are bad mouthing about the movie. Loved the shot where Bond opens the garage and behold the Aston Martin DB5, the classic Bond car. Those who have watched Goldfinger would know what the little red button on the shifter does Too bad they destroyed the car in the end.

There were a few gross negligences, like for example Eve uses a Olympic Arms K23B with what appears to be a 4x scope, however the magnification shown (when she zeroes in on Bond on the train top) is that of a 8x scope (pardon my nuttiness).

On the whole the movie is good.

True, overall its a nice movie, DB5 is the best and when he opens the door and the music score for the car is super cool, M and bond do mention on the little red button as well. Wanted to see the DB5 in action but :( Jag and Land Rover Defender look cool on screen, TATA will be proud and i guess there will be a new jag, M edition

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

I absolutely enjoyed watching Limitless

The story revolves around an aspiring author. He is at the very bottom of his existence. His girl friend has just dumped him, he has no money, no job. Absolutely nothing.

Then he bumps into his ex-wife's brother. He gives him a pill. This pill opens up his mind. He can remember everything, learn anything, see patterns.

He realizes the potential and starts writing his novel. But the effect wears off before he can complete it. He ex-wife's brother is dead. But he luckily find a stash of pills.

The movie follows his journey.

Decent acting and an ok screen play.

Just imagine, if any one of us gets such a pill.
Remembering every thread on team-bhp. If nothing else, our spouses would kill us.

One interesting parallel in SkyFall. There is that scene with the motorbike chase on top of the roof of Istanbul's Great Bazaar.
This is the exact same setting used for the Climax scene of 'The International', another excellent film in the thriller genre with Clive Owen playing the lead.
I thought that Clive Owen would have made a great James Bond too!

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Skyfall - As the series progresses, MI6, and Bond, look more like humans and become more fallible. Javier Bardem as a Bond villain is a splendid idea, and often outdoes Daniel Craig in the movie. Adding Ralph Fiennes to the cast only betters the deal.
There's less womanizing and gadgets, and more of knuckle sandwich and gritty action. The film is not without it's share of loose ends, and the climax in the chapel is particularly campy in nature. But there is a hint of a series reboot in the post climax scenes, and that, my friends, should be a fact that we should rejoice upon.
A thoroughly watchable film with some exceptions, and thankfully nothing remotely close of a spy movie like 'Ek Tha Tiger'.

P.S - This movie was not filmed with IMAX cameras, so give the IMAX version a pass.

i wonder how the movie would have panned out if Pierce Brosnan did the part of 007 in Skyfall. i feel he's the best Bond ever, combination of finesse and ruthlessness. Sean Connery is a close contender.

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

A very nice way of putting your review across BlackAsta - I enjoyed reading your post. "Ek Tha Tiger"? Good heavens! That is as bad a movie as Agent Vinod is going by the excerpts I ve seen - I would not wish to watch either of these films.
A good point made about Skyfall and IMAX. I almost bought IMAX tickets and then decided against. Am glad now!

IronH4WK
I also like Pierce Brosnan a great deal - it is indeed a close contention between him and Sean Connery for the title of "Best Bond" ever.
Tough decision to make there!
I like Sean Connery because he was the inimitable original and I think he is a fantastic actor. I also like Pierce Brosnan because he is elegant, stylish, was an absolute natural successor to the Bond role after Remington Steele and is a very good actor too.
