re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Just finished watching "Full Metal jacket".

Its not just another Vietnam war flick. Its rating as one of the best war movies ever made truly is well deserved.

It not only explores the perils of the war through the eyes of a "war journalist", but actually begins from how the marines were trained and the humiliation they suffered at the training camps too. It also explores the justification the Americans had for this war with 0 accountability of their exploitation and torture of the general Vietnamese people. Like some gave a lecture on how the army was there to help the "gooks" whilst others kept busy by shooting down farmers, women and children from an attack chopper.

Visually its not too gory (hardly actually) but the acting, that too from a relatively unknown star cast is commendable.

Must watch for any war movie buff out there.

Rating - 4/5

Next up, "Apocalypse now".

Memorable quotes from Full metal Jacket, the gunny sergeant is brutal.

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched 50/50 this weekend. A sweet n sour movie that mixes comedy with pain. This film is NOT for teenagers, rather being more targeted toward young adults. Liked the performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt - calm and understated. Seth Rogen plays the perfect folly - loud and brash. Do watch it.
4/5 in my book.

The Entitled

A very good kidnapping-gone-wrong movie. Wish it had powerful starcast. But that is ok as this movie doesn't demand high profile acting. Lots of twist and turns and not bad 1 and half hour spent.

A good one time watch.

4/5

Mr. Popper's penguins

Funny movie that shows relationship between a family of human and penguins. Jim Carry is real good ably supported by kids and wife. Penguins are cute and funny. Each penguin has a trait which is explored very well. Good direction, good story, obviously won't win any oscars but it is a feel good, family oriented movie. Kids would love it. There are some over the top scenes, but it is ok.

Overall, a very good family movie.

4/5

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched the following movies :-

Full Metal Jacket

What a fantastic movie. It shows the training to become a marine and also focuses on a protogonist who decides to take up war journalism during the vietnam war.

Lee Ermey as the drill sergeant was exceptional and his monologues should be saved on a CD as they are so inspirational and his dailogue delivery is excellent. He deserved all the awards he received for his short role. He gets into the skin of nasty characters ( remember him in Texas Chainsaw Massacre?)

Overall a great watch

4/5

Catch the Kid

Saw this movie on someone's recommendation on this thread. This movie as the name suggests is for the kids. Story of 3 teenage kids who rob a hi-tech bank to generate 250K for surgery of one of the member ( girl) of the hiest gang.

Most of the planning shown looks too easy for it to happen in real-life and with some action thrown in, was just a below average time-pass flick

1.5/5

Goodwill Hunting

Story of a genius math student-cum-laborer ( Matt Damon) mentored by his pychatrist ( Robin Williams) and professor ( Stellan Skarsgard)
Great story and superb acting by all these 3 main stars with able supporting role by Ben Affleck who wrote the story along with Matt Damon.

Stellan Skarsgard ( also seen in Ronin) has a terrific voice and excellent style of dialogue delivery.

Must watch movie

4/5

P.S: Next in line is "Analyse That". I watched the prequel and laughed my guts out. Is this a suitable sequel?

Water for Elephants is a nice movie. Its drama and romance. Puts a perspective on the memories when we visited a circus. Starring Robert Pattison, Reese Witherspoon and Christopher Waltz (from Inglorious Basterds).

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

'Real Steel' is real deal - especially on IMAX. The father-son connection drew in a lot of families, as did the animatronic robots fighting each other in death matches. This $110 million film won't win any oscars (save for visual effects etc.) - but shall appeal to the kids and young adults alike. Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo are equally good.
4/5 from me.

Just saw Captain America last night.... good flick..... again on the lines of serious superheroes but not as good as a Batman or an Iron Man (Part 1) & yes saw Transformers 3. Painful. Now it's become just a lot of crushed metal, explosions & not as hot as Fox heroine.

Watched Gran Torino over the weekend. It was on my 'to do' list for past couple of years As always, the movie revolves around the strength of Clint Eastwood's character.

4/5 from me.

Try Mel Gibson's "We were Soldiers". It is about the first ever battle between the US & North Vietnamese Armies in the Vietnam War (Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965). If you like war movies, this one is a must watch. The UH-1s flying nap of the earth, are too good, so are the Close Air support scenes by US fighter jets.
