Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

Please suggest some good shoes for half marathons (twice in a month). Currently, I am using Decathlon shoes but now looking for shoes which can give bounce and comfort on long runs.

You can check the new Puma Nitro range. They have different models to suit your style. Lightweight and comfortable.

Thanks Abhisheknott.

Any suggestion on Adidas, Nike, New Balance and ASICS models?

You havent specified any budget for the same.

The Nike Pegasus and Asics Nimbus line are my go to. Usually change once in 1.5-2 yrs and always have 2 pairs at a time.

These shoes are ~10K a pair. You have multiple options both cheaper and way more expensive.

However for half marathons I wouldnt really recommend going for shoes any cheaper than Pegasus.

Adidas Supernova is decent shoe. Asics Novablast is another option.
Nike fit is narrow so haven't used them for a long time.
Do ensure that you try them before buying.

Any recommendations for running socks? I run between 5 to 15km frequently. But running with regular cotton socks gets rough when I try to do over 15km. My soles burn and blister.

Hi aneezan. In my experience, I have found that shoes, rather than socks, are responsible for burn/blister. The shoes are essentially rubbing against the area of feet where you have blisters. Thicker socks might make the matter worse, since you will end up having less wiggle room in the shoe. The solution is to go for wider shoes with soft and flexible upper or go sock-less and see. If sock-less works for you, then you can try out the five finger socks available from Amazon. They are thin and they work fine preventing the toes rubbing against each other.

Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

I'd say it could be either socks or shoes TBH. I think move to any "running" socks as a starting point - they'd have been designed with running in mind. ASICS has some decent ones I know. There are many other specialist brands as well but not necessarily needed.

The point on the fit of the shoe is also valid but if you are confident that your shoes fit right, don't have undue movement etc, then go with the running socks first.

Or get rid of socks. I moved to barefoot running a year ago and haven't looked back. There's a wide range of "barefoot" shoes available in the market. I currently use Vibram Five Fingers; and don't need socks (they do offer running socks but many choose to run without them). Have gone up to a HM with no constraints faced.

But on a general note, your shoes might be more to blame than the socks. Start off with them first I'd suggest.

You can try Asics Gel Kayano 30. I have them and use them to run 10kms 2-3 times a week.

Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

Hi guys. Budding runner here. Took it up as a means to stay fit (as a natural extension to longer and faster walks I was doing) when I hurt my wrist in a fall off my cycle (I'm a cyclist ... cycling is my primary sport) and before long my competitive juices started flowing and I got hooked on to it. Did a few timed runs. 5k's and 10k's, and the Bajaj Allianz and Tata Mumbai Marathons, 10k for both. Started training again recently (thanks to the rains and the muck preventing me from taking my bike out) and planning on trying to go for the Half Marathon this time, again in the Bajaj Allianz and Tata marathons. Stumbled upon this thread while wondering if there was anything on running here!

Cheers, Doc

Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

Hi guys,

In training for my first Half Marathon, in addition to the 2 weekday runs and 1 weekend long run, should 1 weekday run be dedicated to Intervals or Hill Repeats?

Which will be better?

This is the 6 week plan I have completed the first 2 weeks of (but without the Intervals on Thursday ... just doing a normal run instead on my standard loop).

The Running / Marathon Thread-img_20230904_1801482.jpg

I'm asking (wondering) if I should replace the Intervals sessions shown for Thursday with say 2-3 hill repeats of a 860 meter 3% hillock (26m elevation gain), which takes me around 6 minutes each. From this week on.

As per the plan, I have a reasonably rolling 15k run this Sunday.

Both have value, you can mix them up. If you're ever looking at a hilly course then of course make it hill training biased but both are important and you can alternate amongst them. I recently ran the Satara half and my training involved a mix of interval training as well as hill training.

Some rolling terrain thrown into your weekend longs doesn't hurt either. Just to vary it up.

Good luck with the event - which one is it if I may ask.

Cheers.

Thanks! Yup, for the weekend longs I plan to run them on Pashan NDA road which is a favourite of runners and pretty rolling. The 15k this Sunday is the month's LSOM and on Sinhagad Road, which again should be a reasonably rolling course.

I have access to my college athletics track which is a professional Olympics style artificial red rubberized running track, for the Intervals too.

The main HM event for me will be the Tata Mumbai Marathon in January next year. The 10k at the TMM I ran this year was great in terms of pace because it was so flat, but I hear there is a big flyover on the return in the HM route.

I might also do the HM at the Bajaj Allianz marathon in Poona later this year. Once again, I had first run a 10k there last year, leading up to the TMM. Along with another timed run in the Southern Star Vijay Run of the Indian Army Southern Command that was a 12.5k run (I ran the 10k fast, stopped recording my run for the paced time, and them ambled across for the last 2.5k).

This was my Tata 10k earlier this year (though Strava had me at 1:02:40 ) -

Pashan NDA is nice rolling - good place for sunday longs. I’ve run there a fair few times too since my base when I’m visiting Pune is usually Baner area.

TMM 21k is a nice route (compared to their 10k). All the best for that - I’ll be running TMM too.
