There are plenty of superstitions and 'home remedies' for epilepsy, one of them being made to sniff a shoe or slippers.
adbdriver is right, it's to prevent any further injury because the person is unconscious but the jaw muscles are very much active. The fit subsides by itself after a few minutes. Rest is all superstitions.

In rare cases I have seen the person semi conscious and being able to communicate but not able to control the fits that last much longer.

How does this work. What is the relationship between metal keys and an epileptic fit.

Thanks.
No connection whatsoever. The other things mentioned like stuffing a piece of cloth in the mouth is to prevent tongue biting which can be severe in some cases of fits.

.
Most convulsions last for a few mins whether you give a metal piece or not. If you see anybody convulsing in a public area, try to get/ push the guy to safe flat empty area so that he doesn't bang his head or any body area on hard objects, furniture etc. Preferably put him in a prone position or at least to a side so that he does not choke on his saliva. After the convulsion, the person will be drowsy or unconscious( called "aura" in medical lingo). Meanwhile arrange for medical help.
The part about tongue bite is correct, but it may not always be possible for a lay observer to put anything in the mouth. A tongue bite will always heal and is not much of a problem.
Coming across a person having convulsions, the first time is little scary.

Checked on this point> While hormonal changes is one possible reason, it is a remote one. It can be a possibility if the lady is in menopausal stage. But in this case, if she has school going kids, then she should be younger.

What can @carfreak suggest here for this person ?

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hey guys,

another question.

Recently had a master health checkup done and got this report which included this little thing:

Liver panel test
- SGOT (Rate reaction + PP)
- Result 75 (Unit - U/L)
- Reference value 15-46

- SGPT
- Result 198
- Reference value 13-69

Something I should be worried about? Suffered from a serious bout of hep-B when I was a kid.

PS: did a little research now and before anyone asks:

1. Quit drinking entirely in Jan this year. Even prior to that, I used to drink just scotch/neat once or twice a week as a night cap.
2. Am a fitness freak - 5 day work-outs a week/twice a week swimming/just did a 260 km trek into tibet.
3. My body weight is 70 kgs, am about 30 yrs old, height of 171 cms.
4. Am completely off body supplements (weight training) for the past 6 months.

Sometimes giving space and time to a woman will solve a lot of problems. Women undergo mood swings more often than men, and with any hormonal changes it could only get worse. And unlike men, women can become very unstable in their behaviour due to bodily changes.

Proper medication and giving her enough space and time is the key here. Forcing her into something will have only serious implications. Everything needs to be handled with a lot of care and patience.

I wish her speedy recovery and hope the family gets harmony very soon.

I'm no expert here. But based on whatever I read I understood the following -

1. It is important to give the person his/her space and time. As you mentioned in your post a lot of us don't understand what is personal space.

2. It is important to not let the person become a recluse.

3. Sometimes life can hit a person hard, very very hard, where he feels that what's the point in living. It's very difficult to guide such a person to recovery without knowing the proper reasons for his depression. But one quick possible part of solution will be relocating the person to a different city/place. Change of air and change of place can do a lot of good.

4. As a person who is around a depressed person, you can keep your conversations simple and around day to day talks. You can never be negative, and being too positive to the person will only make the person feel it's all false hope. But yes, it doesn't mean you should not be positive at all, you got to give it slowly. Taking the person to spiritual places, and places where he likes to roam around earlier, will also do a lot of good.

5. Whatever I've said earlier are only very common approaches, but treating a depressed person could at times can take a lot of thought process. So it's important, solutions are created on case to case basis with a lot of thought given to each of the solutions.

I wish your friend a speedy recovery and a Happy Life.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Guys,

Quick one on behalf of my friend:

Distal radius fracture in the right hand caused by a bike accident 2 years back. Was operated and has titanium plates and 6-screws. All of a sudden, while playing badminton a couple of weeks back, he realized he's unable to extend his index finger.

Consulted a plastic surgeon and orthopaedic surgeon in Sparsh hospital and bad news is one of the screws has ruptured the index finger's extensor tendon. He'll require surgery now to remove the screws and plate (from the plamar side) as well as another surgery on the back of the hand to repair the torn tendon.

We've been told the recovery would take 6 weeks (and for that no use of right hand!).

I'm writing to find out the general recovery protocol and what to expect during/after the surgery/recovery and whether it has any other impact on any nerves or anything ?

In general, in 6 weeks from the surgery will normal range of motion and strength be back ?

Also, anyone has any prior experience with Sparsh Hospital (Hosur Road) ? Any other/better alternative hospital for this surgery ?

Well, I think that for an extensor tendon to rupture when the volar plating has been done needs a long screw that is protruding from the dorsal side, and that should not happen. In other words, with proper technique and instrumentation, the screws should not protrude from the other side. The repair rehab protocol is correct and it sould not be much of a problem subsequently. A hand surgeon would be your best bet for this. Sorry, I dont know about your local hospitals so cant help with that.

Local steroid injections can also help. In severe cases, excision of the spur or release of the plantar fascia can help.

A common and normal condition that is of concern to most parents. Will resolve with increasing age. And don't keep pointing it out to your daughter, most kids at 7 years are not conscious of their looks at all, unless their parents make them so.

My kid has been through similar formation, though I wont compare situations. Best to consult a pediatric dentist or orthodontist. What I was told is that the visible teeth that are mostly milk teeth (dont have roots like permanent teeth) but for some reason dont fall off easily as permanent teeth emerge. Hence the deviations. Also the age by when most of the milk teeth are replaced by 10 to 12 years age and if any corrective action to improve bite or appearance via braces etc is typically done on permanent teeth. One solution for crowding of teeth is to go for early extraction of obstructing milk teeth. Your orthodontist is likely to ask for a xray to study before recommending such action.

Related to corrective extraction of milk teeth, Stemmade India offers to extract stem cells from dental pulp, for those who didnt go for umbilical stem cell banking at time of birth. Needless to mention, these are costly and depend on success of stem cell research advances in future. Visit this site for more information http://www.stemade.com/

it is very well explained by SS-Traveller. it must be the ugly duckling stage. but, in case you see teeth erupting behing existing milk teeth. consult a pediatric dentist. you can post a photograph of your daughter teeth for more correct interpretation.

Regarding Stem ceels. its a good ide to preserve dental stem cells in case u missed cord blood cells.

POINTERS
1. Tendon ruptures are uncommon but known complication of plating.

2. 6 weeks is a conservative estimate. I should think recovery will be earlier. Please do go to a hand surgeon or a plastic surgeon.

Sorry can't help you with the hospitals.

Cheers

Hi,

I am suffering from bleeding and secretion from belly button for two weeks now.

Consulted a doctor who gave ampicillin and paracetamol.
Reduced but not healed completely

underwent sonography which reads:

Finding are suggestive of a small granulation tissue along the umblical region. No collection is seen. no other significant abnormality is detected.

The doctor says its a 15 min surgery that is needed.

I am not comfortable with the current doctor.

request for suggested treatment or doctor/hospital to visit in mumbai/navi mumbai

TIA,
Vikram
