Thanks much kochup. I read the no-bystanders allowed regulation in their website too. However, when they gave the dates to get admitted, they mentioned to have one lady attendant stay with my mom. Looks like discretion of the doctor.

One question: did your dad stay multiple days before CABG? If so, how would you compare OP vs ward care? I'm a little worried to leave my mom alone. This is her first ever in-patient admission in 71 years

The in-patient experience is much better, the major issue with OP is the crowd and the chaos. i am assuming the OP might also have been ironed out as my experience was in 2017 and COVID management measures would have brought in some order.

Appreciate this kochup. In case this helps someone else, I also reached out to a friend of mine whose in-laws had familiarity with the hospital. They mentioned the same.

Will update this post once I get more details I'm gathering.

2ms.
I am not a doctor, but a note on sleeping pills. There are multiple categories like SSRIs, Benzos etc and I am not sure which one is prescribed for you. Yes, long term in consultation with your doctor is ok. However it can cause a dependency on the drug. It is a dependency and not an addiction.

Also, more than the side effects, you need to worry about the withdrawal effects. Almost all drugs in these categories can cause (at times severe) withdrawal effects if you stop them suddenly. So, you can continue to take long term if you see that its benefitting you and you are ok to depend on it for your sleep. But when you plan to stop, please taper off gradually over a period of a few weeks.

Hope this helps. This is based on my personal experience and not a professional advice.

PS: I could check with my neuro, but posting here to get different opinions.
Hi,

You should not take any medicine beyond the prescribed limits. Also, both of these medicines do have indirect effect on sleep.
As you have mentioned that there were some personal issues which led to your anxiety in the first place, which could also affect your sleep. I think you should have a consultation with a psychiatrist as well to alleviate depressive/ anxiety issues, if any. And relax

Fawad

Can anyone guide/refer to a good gastroenterologist who can help with my Acid Reflux issue? I am based out of Mumbai (Chembur) Earlier I had the same issue and on endoscopy was treated with antibiotics. I need to find the root cause and help resolve that to avoid recurrence.

Gastroenterologist are quite a few these days and what you are describing is pretty common issue for them to solve. However, if you are looking for good ones are are ok to pay their rightful fees, then I have a couple of names to recommend. My Mom has been visiting one at Hinduja Hospital (not far for you) since over a decade and he is a good Gastroenterologist indeed. He has helped her avoid a very costly (medically for her body/age) surgery through these years for her IBD condition.

Another option is Global Hospital (now called Gleneagles) at Parel, next to KEM. These guys are the granddaddies of Gastroenterology. Some of them are recipients of awards such as Padma Shri. I had good experience at Global during Covid lockdown for my Dad's surgery (some procedure that a handful of hospitals do in Mumbai)

PM me if you need more details.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Recently did a full checkup and consulted an Internist on the results.

Two questions on the prescriptions.

1. Rosuvas for LDL. The capsule indicates caution for kidney and liver ailments.

2. Nervigen for Vit B deficiency. A quick look into the medicine indicates this is for nerve damage repair and pain alleviation.

Can it be taken safely or should I take another opinion?

Views from doctors in this forum is appreciated.

1) It is safe for normal people without any liver disease or kidney disease, which I assume normal for you.

2. Nervigen - perfectly safe. Though the usefulness is limited. You can even omit taking this.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Guys,

My wife, aged 68, has had high to very high blood pressure for several years, and does take regular medication for it. She goes for blood tests every so often and has had slightly high blood sugar for some time. A few days ago, she got this from a local lab a couple of days ago, having followed the recommended test before the samples were taken.

She's never had tests that show more than pre- or mildly-diabetic before, but this one seems to have gone through the roof. As with most non-medically-trained people, I have no clues what most of these report results mean. That's what we need doctors for. She goes for test... but she is generally very reluctant to go to the doctor.

A friend of hers, who at least has the experience of being diabetic, says that this is worrying.

Please guide me: how much should I be panicking (or trying not to show it: the more I panic the more she won't go to the doc!)

If these figures are correct, then you should be definitely worried. I would suggest you meet your family physician or the doctor you go to regularly pretty immediately.

At 68 years of age, I would suggest you take this test result a little seriously.

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Thank you (and to another member who has PMed me) for your response and advice.

She is planning to take another set of tests at another lab this week. She used a friend's testing kit and got a higher reading.

She is certainly taking it seriously: as of the day itself, she has cut white rice from her diet and learned about glycaemic index. She is a veggie (I'm not), neither us eat much highly-processed food, and we do not take a lot of sweets or refined sugar*. Even her rice intake is modest compared with what might loosely be called the standard South Indian diet, but still she has cut it.

She will go and see a doctor. She is starting with diet and exercise. If doc prescribes sugar-control medicines, she will take that.

It is a whole new thing that I too have to start learning about.

*I always think that I take a lot of sugar, but really it is tiny compared to those who live on sweets and fizzy drink!

Re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

My mom has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She had a palliative surgery (colostomy) for constipation issues last week. The Dr said 15 days from the date of surgery we can start chemo every week and then plan for surgery after 9 - 12 weeks if things go as planned. My mom is in a state of shock (me as well) that we do not know whether to proceed with chemo or palliative way. Mom feels at 69 & highly diabetic her chances are less. I really don't want her suffer and need suggestions on what to do.

T.E.G. let me cut to the chase. Get her to a doctor ASAP - today. These are very high levels - both the counts are off the charts. A lot of people stay away from doctors out of diffidence, fear or arrogance {the "nothing will ever happen to me" syndrome}. Her levels are at a point where subject to her other health parameters she could lose consciousness, create long term damage to other organs - kidneys, eyes etc. Some of that damage might have already occurred. The fact she is a high blood pressure patient not taking a daily dose to keep it in control is an equally big red flag.

My mother was a similar case of refusal to see a doctor. Her resistance and I dare say arrogance was extreme and I had a very difficult time with her. Till one day in March 2020 she collapsed due to super high sugar levels and needed almost 4 months in hospital to recover and at least twice in that period the Doctor told me she won't make it through the night - all for the silliness of not going to a doctor on time. Now she has learnt her lesson.

I would strongly suggest you put your foot down and get her to a doctor.
