I thought this would be interesting. But not sure where to post. So it goes here.
IBNLive > Olympics > Beijing menu: scorpion fry, seahorse kebab
They do have so many beliefs like we do. Eg:
Quote:
The Chinese traditionally believe certain animals or their organs have medicinal properties. "The seahorses are good for men's kidneys and their virility. Those (crustacea) are for the girls to improve their skin and looks, and these (lizards) are for both the boys and the girls, they boost your virility," said food vendor Sun Hainan.

Well, IMO when we first hear of it, it seems odd, but I guess it is all about "One man's meat is another man's poison". To a pure veg guy, it would be incomprehensible how a N.V. person can eat the flesh of an animal/bird say chicken/pork/mutton/beef. But a NV guy does not think its a big deal.
Same here. I can't imagine eating a scorpion, but for someone it might be a tasty thing. Dont mind eating the seahorse though. :)
In Japan, octopus is a delicacy, but we grow up reading how it uses its 8 tentacles to catch prey - basically a fear factor. There they serve live baby octopus with sauce and my friends said that when you swallow the little ones, they try to hold on to your tongue using their tentacles.
I would not mind eating cooked octopus, but not live ones. :Shockked:
See the pics I took at a department store there.
Packed Octopus :
And the squid is just yummy (cooked ie.).
Raw squid for sale :
Cooked squid (in some kind of batter) at a restaurant :

Agreed.
In Japan they eat most stuff raw - Sushi (Raw Fish), basashi (Raw horse), Raw Chicken, octopus etc. I was able to make the first 3 (I like it too), but never successful in live octopus. Infact I could not even eat the cooked one, since it was so chewy and... ok I leave it there.
All of Beijing is an Olympics venue Quote:
The cigarette industry is also dislocated. Smoking is a national habit in China. Paramount leaders like Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping were chain smokers. The supreme sacrifice of curbing smoking is already under way. Even in the restricted rooms where smoking is permitted, they have fitted nano air filters have to break cigarette smoke down to harmless particles before it is released into the atmosphere.

They have another national habit -- spitting. The traditional belief is that phlegm is evil and must never be retained in the body. Singapore ended the habit by imposing heavy punishment on offenders. China is currently trying persuasion. What is called the Capital Ethics Development Office has distributed to local people two million booklets on how to behave in public places. It is all about smiling, queueing, not littering and of course not spitting.

scorpion fry and sea horse kabab , that should be interesting
We have such a great variety in food eating habits in India itself. There are people who eat all kinds of stuff in different parts of our own country. The list includes frogs, winged termites, rats, dogs, quail and many more. We probably do not eat any of these in raw form.
Vegetarains please forgive.
So the talk is about weird food.
I got this in an email a couple of months back.
Ill let the pictures do the talking.
cheers:
OMG my appetite is dead right now, man dog and vegetables. no more BON appetite!
Only thing I can think right now is y**. Never liked these type of foods though. This is entirely my opinion. How do people eat snakes and other stuff shown? There are so many varities in vegetarian itself why not try it?
My mouth is watering.
Can anyone please book a ticket to the olympics. I love exotic food always. Purely personal opinion
Love to see the way they cook.
Else let me know the place in Bangalore where I can taste them
Man food in India is far far better and world class delecious :)
Yuckkkk.....you guys just about killed my appetite! And I'm a hardcore Non-Veg food lover!!
Each country has some variety to offer ! Indians born and brought up in China or Japan (we have family members settled there) do eat all these above stuff as we eat chappathi, dal, pani puri, dahi vada, idli, dosa etc. no difference at all. So, its about how you are brought up from childhood.
You like non-veg food because you were born to a family that eats non-veg as a daily dish. You like veg food because you were born to a purely vegitarian family. So, its our family and food habits that matters throughout life.
I cant even imagine eating a snake or a worm, even if I am totaly drunk !!
It totally depends on availability. India is rich in pulses, spices, veges starting from day one of the world. So, probably we did not had any NEED to taste these things. Japan, surrounded all over by Sea, is hard core fan of sea foods. Same goes with Calcutta or kerala too right? But the diff is, it stops in fish. Because there are alternatives.
Just my opinon again.
