Re: The Career Advice Thread

Hi everyone,

I wanted to learn Instructional Design. Can anyone offer some reliable sources from where I can learn it? I am more in favor of online courses if the opportunity presents itself. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Re: Jobs, Attrition & Layoffs in IT companies

Forget the politics behind the protests, let's focus on the career aspect.

What is the career impact on students who protest on campus in front of cameras... it is really chilling.

Re: The Career Advice Thread

Calling all the IT and SaaS Experts for your opinion -

I have 2 offers, both with the same designation but in different domains.

The 1st 1 is into Cloud Migration Consulting (AWS and Azure), Managed Services and AI/NLP Implementation. This is a remote opportunity, with frequent customer site travel coming up, domestic and abroad.

The 2nd 1 is into Supply-Chain and Logistics Consulting (more towards TMS/FMS implementation). The office is in Vikroli, and will require daily travel from Borivli to Vikroli, with planned customer visits, domestic and abroad.

Catch :
1. The 1st offer, they want to re-negotiate the CTC after confirming the same, and I see a potential reduction of about 3L from the agreed numbers, effectively reducing my CTC by 3L atleast.
The 2nd offer stands as-is, more than the CTC offered by the 1st one.

Questions -
1. While Cloud and AI are the talk of the town, I'm unable to digest the reduction in the compensation that I'll be drawing.
2. The 2nd one, though is more like a start-up, but is an established technology solutions provider in it's space, but I do have my reservations in the sustenance of the industry/demand of the tech and my prospects going forward.

While I'll be directly working (and reporting) to the founders in both the offers, I'm
confused which 1 is the right fit for me?
Should I be foregoing the 3L to get into Cloud and AI (a more established industry and the organization), or should I be greedy and jump the ship into an emerging startup?

Thoughts please?

Cloud/Data Science/AI are just the latest buzzwords in an industry that thrives on buzzwords. Which of the companies is doing the kind of work that interests you? That will motivate you to go beyond your role and won't seem like work? That should be the deciding factor.

Another factor is that this is not exactly a great time for startups. My last job was at a startup and my present job too is at one. I left the last company a year before they folded, the signs were obvious, but only after I joined. Before that, they painted a very rosy picture. And while my present org is well-funded, the prospects for breaking even or being acquired don't look good. If you have a choice between an established profitable company, versus a startup, that might be a factor. But of course, there is no guarantee that there won't be layoffs at an established, profitable org too. And an early-stage, well-funded startup might pay very well for a few years with no issues.

(Also, and this is purely my view, I'd gladly forgo 3L overall CTC in exchange to not have to commute in Mumbai!)

Re: The Career Advice Thread

I have a query on how to show an ex-employer which is no longer operational in my resume. Let me lay out the scenario:

I joined a small IT consulting firm for my first job which I left after 2 years of service. This company remained operational until around few years back when it was merged with couple of other similar sized companies to form a larger IT consulting firm. The new entity has a new name, office and most of the people from my days with the first company have moved on. There is no entity by the name of my first company anymore. So, how should I represent this ex-employer on my resume so as to minimise any adverse impact on background verification with a prospective employer? Should I just mention something like "no longer in operation" in my resume against this company? I do not want to mention the newer larger company that was formed by merger since I do not have a means to verify whether they carried over my employment records from first company or not.

Anyone here has dealt with a similar situation?

Depends a bit on what stage of career you are in. How many years of experience you already have?
In IT it is the domain you should be going after. And specializing in it. Software tools come and go. Domain remains.
People who made sure that their job changes aligned with the domain/industry of their choice did well in long run in IT.

So ask yourself which domain you want to be a specialist of. And do it well.

How about:

X years at XYZ Company (Now a part of ABC Corporation)

Is the old company's website still active? Provide a link to that. In most cases, they will re-direct to the new entity website, giving additional credence to the fact.

Thanks for the pointer. The old company's website is not active anymore but luckily the new company's website has references about the old company. I would still need to check with their HR to know for sure that they have my employment records at the new company.

My suggestion is, don't bother. If it comes to that, that is what the company is paying the background-check agency for. As long as the new entity website states that your old company was acquired, that should do.

I've worked for 3 companies that don't exist anymore. A significant portion of my total experience. Two were acquired and had a name change, one just folded. One didn't even have a physical office, or an office ID card, all I could provide was salary slips. But I've switched jobs without any issues post those developments, with BG check processes.

(And frankly, a lot of these background agencies just do very, very minimal checks. IMHO, companies just waste money employing them, more for compliance than anything else.)

Re: The Career Advice Thread

Hi All,

Looking for advice from the seniors members.

I am 33 years old, completed by B.com in marketing in 2014. I had been running my martial art classes all these years and have never worked in corporates. Now I am thinking of switching my career and wanting to join a corporate to finding more stability financially while reducing my classes and teaching for the passion towards the art.

The BIG question: What are my options and how do i go about it? Will i be a fresher starting from zero again? What short courses can i do which would help me secure a job?

I am open to all suggestions.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Re: The Career Advice Thread

Hello BHPians

Thank you for sharing your candidly sharing your views regarding the future of software engineering. I believe that S/W engineering as career is surely going to stay, however the skills required to excel will change.

My friend who is in early 40s (Computer Science UG, BITS + Top 5 global MBA grad + 17+ yrs of work exp in big 4/strategy/ops) is considering pivoting to AI/ML. The number of exciting opportunities in traditional strategy/consulting seems to have plateaued. He wants to jump onto the AI/ML bandwagon and is willing to learn the ropes.

He has the following queries:

1. Should he enroll in a full time AI/ML program or learn online?
2. How much time should he factor in before he is able to crack a AI/ML role in big tech?
3. How receptive would employers be to talk to a "17 yrs experienced newbie"?
4. Would spending time sharpening his cloud analytics skills be a better track to take?

Thank you very much.

Hello,

There are a plethora of courses/certifications that you can pursue online. You first need to narrow down your search. There are thousands of skills you can learn. However, for making a meaningful impact you should choose at most 2 .
First step is to figure out your area of interest by talking to people, reading, listening to interviews, looking at career progressions of people on LinkedIn.

Once this step is done, you need to list down the key skills that organizations value in your chosen area of work.

Next step is to start learning those skills and at the same time networking (v important).

Most importantly you need to be patient and not get deterred by repeated failures/obstacles.

Hope this help.

Best of luck!
