Re: Do you play the stock market

If you place bets, rather than invest, your returns will be like that from a casino. If you invest, your returns will be like returns from an enterprise. Means, if you choose a wrong line of business, you still lose. And what is wrong for you might be right for others.

Research and balance sheet analysis are the only means to get out of the casino model of entering the stock market.

Re: Do you play the stock market

In stock market people irrespective of one addressing themselves as investors or trader buy low and sell high to make money.
Calling someone gambler or going to an extent of calling someone who shorts the market and makes money as antinational (No one has called anyone here this way, just giving example) only shows the incapacity of the person to make money using that method and nothing more. This also shows lack of knowledge of the person who thinks only his way can make money and no other way is right.
Only way to make money in stock market is loose less when you are wrong and win more when you are right. How long someone holds a stock, what parameter one uses to take his/her buy/sell calls can and will vary from person to person.

IMHO most popular reason for someone to loose money in market is because the focus is only on buying. Real profit/smaller loss is made while selling. Buying point determines the amount or % return you make but it is selling that gives you money. Until one learns to sell right people will loose money and keep calling others names.

Very few investment books teach risk management & selling strategy but all trading books do.

And about the rest of your post, fully agree. Whatever works for someone is the best way to make money in the stock market for that person. There is no one way fits all.

Can you give some more details and feedback of this scheme ? I guess by B22 you mean Bharath 22 ETF (Exchange traded fund). Correct ? Is it better than a diversified large cap/multi cap fund ?

I don't know much about it either. A few days back there was a discussion on this thread that it has shares of some public sector companies.

Some details in post 5072 in this thread.

Re: Do you play the stock market

Swing Trading in Stock market with a good Technical + Fundamental analysis won't be called as gambling.

Some pointers which I learnt so far -

- Technical Analysis is a must to identify Price Action.
- Fundamental Analysis is a must to identify good company.
- For traders, a strict stop loss is a must & say no to emotional or over trading. Even no
trading day is a good trade.
- For investment, hold good quality stocks and forgot daily movements.
- Never listen to TV analysts, Tips or Blind buy. 95 % of the traders lose money this way.

A trader makes money for the day but an investor makes money !!!!

A trader makes money for the day but an investor makes money !!!!

For day trading and swing trading, it is very difficult to beat the operators/HFT people, they will scalp anything and everything. As an investor the best thing is to do long term investing. For people who do stock market as side hustle, please put your money in good stock, stay away from Intraday/FnO.

FA is for long term investing.
TA is for Intraday/Short term investing.

I don't know, I've put my money into Index Mutual Funds and learnt to be content with whatever I get. I just do monthly SIPs and forget about it. Don't have the time, effort or knowledge to buy and sell stocks directly.

This has also been my way to invest in stock market since a few years now. It is tiring to keep looking at charts and trying to time the market to enter or exit. The returns have definitely been better than FD's and I am quite content and happy with this approach. I will keep continuing this until my retirement

Re: Do you play the stock market

Hi Guys,
Do active stock portfolio management services exist for normal retail investors in India? If a guy wants to invest in stock market but he/she doesn't have the time to do so then is there anyway apart from mutual funds to do so?

Re: Do you play the stock market

Yesterday I sold off my little stocks collection which I had started off with during pandemic years (for personal needs, not predicting the markets etc etc).
Everything was in profit as I had started during the stock market crash of 2020.

But as I said it was some spare money I invested and watched it grow.

The profits were accordingly not much to talk about. However what strikes me is the amount of time I spent tracking this little portfolio and the number of hours I spent reading up on stock market since last 2.5 years. It kind of took over my life. I learnt a lot. But at same time now I think maybe it was not worth the time and effort. More I read more I realized how much of information asymmetry retail investors deal with.

I could have spent all those hours on upskilling/certifications etc and that would have generated more money for me in terms of career growth !!

I now understand passive investments via ETF's and Real estate.

Feeling light today. No more logging into portfolio tracker and watching things go red or green.

If you want to do charity and loose money you can take the PMS services from banks.

On a serious note, mutual funds exists for the very same reason you had asked. Find some good rated equity funds and invest in them.
