Yes. Strong wind, rain & hail all together around Mahadevapura for a good half hour. Tapered off quickly though, just a slight drizzle now.

Rained pretty heavily in South Bangalore an hour back. Was raining for an hour and quite heavy with winds. Now it has stopped. Was useful to bring down the heat to some extent

Severe rains in coastal areas today. Mangalore is drowning since the city has very efficiently sealed all the storm drains. Udupi, which is receiving equal amount of rain has no flooding since storm drains are still working.

I remember one fine day in 2010 when Udupi/Manipal received 20 cm. And yes, I do remember the incessant rains for months together (it rains for 6 months?) but I always thought the lack of flooding in Udupi/Manipal is due to the slopes and hilly terrain. My underlying assumption was that all that water runs off to the sea since the entire area is a few metres above sea level (Udupi is 27 MSL and Manipal is 73 MSL). I never quite thought of (or saw) stormwater drains doing their job. Hmm.

No I was inwardly chiding myself for missing that connection. But are there storm water drains outside of 'urban' Udupi?

I think out in the wooded Badagabettu village where TAPMI is, there's no transport-related infrastructure beyond just the tar-roads. There were no drains that I saw in the jungle. I can in fact say the same of some regions in outer Udupi. If what I say is true, it has to be nature's water drainage system doing its job via catchment areas and unimpeded channels in the soil which aid in flow of water to rivers and the sea.

There are natural gullys in the forests and open areas. Sometimes it causes flash floods, but it doesn't cause much trouble to people. Local offroaders go driving in those waters during monsoon. This is very much in Manipal.

Looks like the storm which hit Mangalore has now moved to Bangalore. Half an hour back, the sky became clouded over with jet black clouds. Loud claps of thunder, flashes of lightning followed by torrential downpour in South Bangalore which is continuing unabated till now.

Look forward to temperatures coming down sharply over the next few days.
