A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

Recently tried Indian Tiffin Club, Jayanagar.
This is just opposite Jayanagar traffic police station in the old Maiyas building (they have now moved to the adjacent property that’s right behind).

Tried a few items with a small group of friends.
Idly and Vada (a bit dry) were just ok, sambar was good, it was mildly spicy, not the red coloured sweet ones that are passed off as ‘Udupi’ sambar at many eateries these days

they served 2 chutneys which were ok, but the coconut chutney was a bit cold (refrigerated) which I don’t like.

Next up, we tried the Rice baath of the day which was Veg Palav; it was mild on the spices and simple, served with a Raitha. This was good and had a homely feel.

As luck would have it, our last orders were the best fare - Plain Dosa and Pineapple Kesari baath were really good.

Overall, I felt it was an ok place. The staff who served us spoke only Hindi and added to it the ambience was a tad too sophisticated (upmarket/star hotel types) so we don’t get the vibes of a local South Indian breakfast place.

We left the place and headed to Maiyas next door for the coffee which was not bad (locals swear by their coffee after a morning walk in the area).

It is the 25th year of the Annual Avare Bele Mela. The event is being held at the National College grounds till 5th January 2025. Worth a visit if you are somewhere in the vicinity.

Burma Burma Restaurant.

Tried recently at the Orion Mall, Bangalore. Good (all) vegetarian restaurant. They also have very good Kombucha on tap. Did not try their dessert though.

Past few weeks we have been going over to multiple places across Bengaluru.

1. CTR - None of us (except for my bro in law) liked CTR. The dosae and the chutney both were bland with no taste and too oily.

2. Rasotsav, forum south mall - Typical Gujurati/Rajasthani cuisine food. Too much sweetish for our taste buds but the kids loved it

3. Basaveshwara Khanavali, Jayanagar - Typical north karnataka style food. We usually go for brunch around 12:30 as the place gets full post that. Another plus going in early is that all food will be hot. Like the food except for the Obbattu which I feel is too thick (My mom makes it thinner which tastes much better I feel).

4. Ironhill, Forum south - Loved the ambience, especially the outdoor seating but its smoking section (no kids on the day we went so it was ok for us). Liked the Nachos nutty salad, spiced corn, Brocolli lollipops and Garlic mushroom Bao.

5. Kapoor's Cafe, Jayanagar - Had been here on the 1st of Jan and got a place after 5 mins wait. Ambience was good and we loved the food too except for the cheese paratha (too much butter). Their Chaas is very good and highly recommended.

6. Janardhana hotel, Kumara Krupa road - Ordered idly, vada and Masala Dosae. Typical fare, less oily but the dosae is okish. Coffee is good.

7. Vidhyarthi Bhavan - Liked the dosae and chutney (for kids we took sambar) but felt it was bit oily than last time. Coffee as usual was good.

8. Sri Vinayaka Tiffin Center, Banashankari 6th Stage - A small eatery serves only idly, vada, Khara bath and Kesari bath. Idly was soft and Khara bath was very tasty as well. Vada though tasted good was cold. They serve only with Chutney which was very tasty. Felt it has similar taste like Brahmins. Coffee was not so good though. Recommended to visit early as it is very popular and gets crowded very fast.

Visited few hotels around Bangalore as well and listing them below.

9. Sri Shiva Darshana Shashi Thatte Idly Hotel, Bidadi - Stopped here on the way to Mysore. Ordered thatte idly, masala dosae and Puri. Loved the idly and the spicy chutney but others were meh!

10. Shivalli restaurant - On the way back from Mysore, stopped here for late lunch/snacks. Ordered chats (masala puri, dahi puri), Puri and Masala dosae. Regular stuff but liked the fact that both puri and dosae were not oily. Coffee was good.

11. Maddur Tiffannys - New one opened on new expressway towards Mysore. It is clean and ample parking space. Ordered Dosae, maddur vade and coffee. Kids loved the dosae while I liked the coffee.

12. Shankar tiffin center, Mulbagal - We had plans to visit Prasad hotel for the mulbagal dosa but after going there found that they have closed it permanently (and moved into catering). Was suggested by locals to try the Shankan tiffin center. Its just a short distance away from Prasad. Ordered mulbagal dosae, Masala vade and idly. Loved all of them was very tasty.

13. Rasta cafe - Kids wanted to go out for a night drive so planned to visit this place. Ordered garlic bread, fries and chocoldate waffles. Fries and waffle was good but the garlic bread was okish.

14. Filter cafe - Liked the ambience and the food here here better than Rasta cafe. Ordered Pizza, Crispy fried corn, tomato soup.

With Bangalore being a comparatively new place for me, I find that the food I have generally tried has definitely not hit the right palette. However, there were good experiences in terms of taste that I encountered, namely:

Magnolia Bakery: The Tres Leches is one of the best desserts I have ever had. While being expensive, I definitely recommend it. 10/10.
Dhanraj Ji Chole Bhature (Koramangala): Love the Aloo Paratha. It's something you can have very frequently. 8.5/10
Harley's Fine Baking: The Signature Belgium Chocolate Medovik Cake is very tasty and supremely fresh. 8.5/10.
Brik Oven: My go-to place for Italian pizzas. 8/10.

I also liked the experiences of Rameshwaram cafe, MTR, Taaza Thindi.

I am yet to find good places for:

Hot Chocolate
North Indian
Pav Bhaji
Vada Pav
Frankie

Any recommendations for the same are greatly welcome. Would love to try around the places especially if accompanied by a BHPian.

For hot chocolate, you can try T'Art Cafe on Brigade road. Its a bit on the pricier end but its pretty good.

For north indian, I'd recommend Kapoor's cafe, Grammer in Koramangala and Srinathji's. They are all pretty good and pure veg.

For rolls I'd suggest Fanoos, if you are ok with non vegetarian. Don't have a lot of veg rolls so no idea on that

Basically for a good hot chocolate one should head to a good chocolate place. Thats why Smoor is good. The other one is Zoroy.

Dont know fine-dine, but chowman has some amazing Chinese food. Its located in arkere micolayout. Seating area in small-mid.

If you like Japanese/ thai food, I'd recommed Suku in HSR layout; they serve some amazing delicacies; every dish that I ate was a 10/10.
