To be a An Auto stylist

Hi Manoj,

As in every profession the luck plays an important role, ofcourse with qualifications too. But there are respected stylists without anybackground in specific design education.

Coming back to topic. A stylist should be an engineer with a heart of an artist. Its just like anyother art, requiring, sketching, carpenting, sculpturing, electronics, engineering, materials & lot of other skills. All of these are taught specifically.

In India you can do Masters In Design from IIT's or from NID Ahemdabad, with specialised emph. on transportation Design. One of the best schools in the world is Pforzhiem near stuttgart in germany, to do tghe same.

But you have to have a luck, to get a job afterwards. As a part of this industry, i see a lot of qualified & talented people still struggling to get a good break. Ironically still lot of vacancies remains unfilled in Industry.

Lot of people shift to consumer product design like, which is much easier to get into, with lots of freedom & scope to play with design boundaries.

thanks and one more......

dear Mr. Arun
thanks for ur info, can you suggest me an advice based upon my following qualifications also so that i can do a sole search and be classified in making my decisions since i need to take a big risk of going back to education from a well settled earning status.

edu: 2004 pass out B.E. mech with distinction
proffesional: 3.5 years experience in design in indias two of the leading auto manufacturers AMW and Mahindra in the field of vehicle design and chassis engg of trucks and cars with some styling jobs too.

personal skills: possesed enough skills in pencil sketching and rendering to reproduce any kind of object as it is and made enough car and bike concepts,
moreover possesed enough vehicular & manufacturing knowledge to build any reliable automobile starting from scratch including powerplant selection and vehicle dynamics.

im in a great craze and mad in this field. but at the same time it is little bit risk for a guy of middleclass origin since i would be investing all the money or more than which i ve earned so far.

Can you suggest for me in taking these decisions Eventhough it is hard to get a job in auto styling, is there any alternative scope atleast to survive till i get into auto sector.

thanks in advance
Manoj

Manoj
Was just reading thru...Just something to add to what arunforu put down.

A good place to start would be design competetions. Like the one mentioned here. National Automotive Styling Challenge

I will agree with arunforu1 about the 'luck' part. But if your's is one of the finalist/winner, the tide might as well turn. You could have the auto majors calling you.

But then the basic foundation would be your designing skills (and the level of proficiency). Not to forget your knowledge about cars/systems.

Nevertheless, go ahead, take part in the contest on National Automotive Styling Challenge.

we might just have a great designer who started early on TBHP.

Best of luck
