The online auction was conducted by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on April 7. The auction began with an initial booking price of Rs 25,000. Five individuals took part in the bidding process.

The final bid of Rs 45.99 lakh broke the previous record for the most expensive fancy number sold in Kerala, which was Rs 44.84 lakh.

Another special number that fetched big bucks at the auction was ‘KL 07 DG 0001’. It was sold for Rs 25.52 lakh.

An additional zero between the D and G would've been hilarious.

Wow!! That is a huge price. When we bought our M800 (the next after launch version with the short bonnet) we paid Rs 2500 for TCQ 777. The car was priced at 58,000 and I told my mom that she was wasting money. How times change!!!

Cheers

The chap who bought this Urus also owns a Gentian Blue 992 Turbo with the number "0911".

This guy's number plate is worth 2x more than my entire new car budget.

Can someone explain what makes this number so fascinating? I’m not getting it :Frustrati

James Bond double O, yet another O, 7 :)

Even I cant understand why it cost so much. It also means others wanted this number that it went for such high price. Hope he forfeits the booking amount and doesn't waste paying

And they say, India is a poor country.

It's high time for foreign manufacturers to look at India more seriously. Just look at numbers Mercedes and BMW are doing for last few years. On the other side, companies like Toyota, Honda, Jeep, etc. still thinks we are a third world country and don't have potential.

Thala's DOB, that too twice on the plate!

Does he get to keep the number for life? Or it will go to the next owner when he sells the car?

And the auction date is also 7 clap:

Honestly, while I get that some people love fancy numbers, it's hard to understand such crazy bidding amounts for ordinary numbers that any average joe with money can pick.

Numbers with such huge amounts paid for them should either be meaningful/exclusive (such as G0063 on a G63 Mercedes) or look good (such as HP999999). Guess what? The HP number was bought in auction for 30 lakh for a TVS Jupiter.

In my opinion, inexpensive vehicles with expensive plates are the real flex, such as this 0003 WagonR.

On a Lambo, even if it's KL07DG0707 or KL07DH0007 instead of KL07DG0007, who cares?

4 digit fancy number looks better now since the zereos act as a blank space and spoils he look. Had it been the earlier format with single number, it would have looked nice.
BTW, we paid around 2k for KL 07 Y 7 back in the late 90's. Time definitely has changed :D.

You’re missing the point.

No one, including the owner, cares.

He’s paying for the publicity he gets to become known as the first guy who paid 46 lakhs for a number.

Fancy numbers have always been there, and will continue to be aspirational. It's not for anyone to judge someone else's fascination with a particular number. The buyer is willing to pay, it's a legitimate deal where the MVD earns money - so why question it.

I personally like the transparency with which the Kerala MVD deals with fancy numbers. One doesn't even need an agent to procure one! I myself have bought fancy numbers (of course not anywhere near the prices mentioned here) as it gives me happiness!

I'm so happy that he got this number (whether it is to become James Bond or for Thala or any other personal reason).. Its a win for the govt and public... we should not ridicule his social service by donation to govt funds :)
