Man drives into 30-feet-deep drain | Allegedly guided by Google Maps

Quote:
Another incident of Google Maps-based navigation gone wrong has surfaced online. A man driving his car using the GPS tool in Greater Noida died after his vehicle was guided into a deep drain.
Quote:
He was reportedly using Google Maps to drive to his destination, which proved fatal for him. A video from the nullah showed the car being rescued from the site. The incident took place on Saturday around 3 PM.

A delivery agent, Saurav, who was travelling on the route witnessed the mishap and tried to save Bhati. He was standing in close proximity when the station master's speeding car rushed into the deep drain. Saurav speculated the man was driving the vehicle using Google Maps, which misled him into the nullah and resulted in trouble.
Quote:
According to reports, Saurav and other delivery boy with him rushed to the car to pull the driver out. They broke the car's windows after noting the vehicle doors were locked from inside. They took Bhati to a nearby hospital but he couldn't survive. The police looked into the matter and informed his family about Bhati's death.

Locals urged the need for a warning board to prevent further accident at the spot. They requested the authorities to place barricades or signboards informing danger ahead.
There has been a noticeable rise in cases where navigation systems have misdirected drivers, sometimes leading to tragic accidents. How can we prevent such incidents? Share your thoughts.

Most unfortunate. I see these sort of accidents being reported across the world. First of all we should stop labelling these incidents as “google maps drives man into.…..if anything label them driver follow navigation system instruction blindly!

Lets make one thing clear. Google map did not do this.

The guy drove into this drain himself. Maybe there was an error in google map, but everybody ought to understand you can't blindly follow a map, a digital map, a GPS navigation aid. Even if you have somebody sitting next to you doing the navigation, the driver is still responsible.

Its unclear to me, if there were any signage missing at this spot. But blindly following a GPS navigation system without driver due attention, focus and appropriate speeds for the actual situation is simply one hundred percentage the responsibility of the driver and nobody else.

Navigation device is just an 'aid' at the end of the day and it's to be used as such. As Jeroen mentioned, ultimate responsibility is with the person driving the vehicle.

Police will never blame the other govt. bodies (PWD and others) for not putting barricades or making the road inaccessible. Locals might be aware of road conditions but ultimately roads are not just for locals.

Moreover the blame here on Google maps is based on speculation of a viewer. When will we start using forensic?

Too many cases blaming navigation aids:

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/stree...s-death-6.html (Man drives onto submerged bridge after following Google Maps, drowns to death)

Imagine what will happen when autonomous driving becomes prevalent and such incidents happen!!!

It’s not like Google or any other navigation guide you to an accident. Even if it did, what was the driver doing? And what was the authorities doing? Shouldn’t they barricade and put up warning signs to prevent any vehicle from driving in?

The news report is based on a SPECULATION by a bystander that the driver was navigating using Google maps and that led him into the nallah. There is zero evidence that this happened due to Google Maps.

Mods should consider to delete this thread lest we get sued by Google for speculative, defamatory posts .

It's always baffling how some people blindly follow navigation screens as if they're on autopilot—literally! Technology is meant to assist, not replace common sense.

I find it hard to believe that Google Maps could lead people straight into rivers or drains. The worst it has done to me is guiding me into narrow lanes where even a bicycle would think twice. But hey, a quick glance at the entrance, and I know when to trust my instincts over the GPS

We'll probably soon see a headline reading Google Maps drives car into a truck on the highway. Its the same right

Do people really drive without looking at the road ahead

I never really understood why people get into accidents while relying on Google Maps. From my own experience, I’ve gotten lost a couple of times due to a poor internet connection, which led me to take wrong turns. Otherwise, Google Maps is quite reliable, as it is regularly updated.

I remember back in 2016 when I was living in Bangalore and used Google Maps for navigation. I would simply enter my destination, put on my headphones while riding, and follow the given instructions carefully. By doing so, I always reached my destination without any trouble.

Just a curious thought, Can someone use AI to give false instructions to a specific navigation or GPS device?

The military implications of such devices will be humongous. Sort of like the lighthouses on shipbreaker's bay directing ships onto rocks.

I know crowd sourced map data can be manipulated by users to display false data to all. I am asking about data given to a specific device.
