Maybe the vehicle number can give an idea of the vehicle's age, but practical implementation still looks tricky. When a customer enters a petrol station for a refill, I doubt the attendant will deny them petrol when the customer is ready to pay.

I can't help but wonder; will this lead to a drop in second hand vehicle prices in Delhi?

Who will buy 8+ year old cars in Delhi, if they can run it only for less than 2 years!?

Other option is to sell cars to states which don't have the 10/15 year rule in place. It's a win-win for both seller & buyer.

When we look at this, not from the perspective of pollution control but as a means to increase the sales of new cars, it all makes sense.

Re: No fuel for 15-year old motor vehicles in Delhi

This is a knee jerk reaction. Though there is a central database of vehicles however a petrol pump attendant is not expected to check number plate of every car before refuelling. It is a needless exercise which will become a defunct rule within 6 months of its implementation.

Re: No fuel for 15-year old motor vehicles in Delhi

Seems like another off-the-cuff remark by a politician.

Till RTO/Transport Dept puts in place a mechanism to prominently display the year of manufacture on a registered vehicle, this will never take off.

Re: No fuel for 15-year old motor vehicles in Delhi

My two cents. In the pursuit of reducing pollution, we’re quite literally missing the trees for the woods. A lot of pollution depends on how well you maintain and drive the car. You have 5 year old cars that are badly maintained and more polluting than 15 year old well maintained cars. Idling away at traffic signals is another big cause of pollution. Rash driving with sudden acceleration and braking in the name of exhilaration causes more pollution than sedate steady driving at optimum rpm. But hey, none of these get discussed. If we need to curb pollution with what we have, societal change through driver education can have far reaching impact. Sadly, these don’t fetch you votes, and there’s no money in it for the industry so it will continue to get relegated to the bottom of the priority list.

Re: No fuel for 15-year old motor vehicles in Delhi

The easiest way to check if a vehicle in Delhi is over 15 years old just by looking at it? Simple—gather a group of car enthusiasts, station them at key locations, and let them judge! The only twist? Suddenly, every old Civic will magically appear under 15 years old, and order will be restored!

Delhi: 15-year-old vehicles will not get fuel from April 1

Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has announced that all vehicles that are 15 years old or older will not be given fuel from April 1.

The newly formed Delhi government has launched a pilot project called ‘Aaveg System’ to identify end-of-life vehicles. The system, which is said to use special gadgets, has been installed at 500 petrol pumps. Sirsa also said that a special team will be constituted to identify such vehicles.

The government aims to strictly implement the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) 2015 order, which imposed a ban on 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol and CNG vehicles.

Sirsa said that vehicular movement around the airport will be monitored for emission levels. Carbon credits will be offered based on the reduction in emissions. The government is also proposing a credit system for undertaking plantation drives. Plans for cloud seeding are also on the table.

Well here in GZB, the bunks have stopped giving fuel in bottles/jars. Do not claim that every single bunk has stopped, but as recently found out, every single one in my locality did not give it to me in a 2 litre bottle, citing "orders from above".

BUT, one of them also gave me a solution, "Request one of the 2 wheeler owner to fill 2 liters extra, go out of the premises and make the transfer." He even offered to give me a plastic tube

Where there is a will, there is a way!!

All it’ll do is waste more fuel and increase pollution as owners will be forced to drive further down and get fuel across the border.

Politicians being in bed with car mfg’s again.

I have been driving since 1996. Since then, I have been asked for a PUC certificate just once by a petrol pump going by the no PUC no petrol rule. How is this rule going to be implemented by the petrol pumps? Will cops now stand with the pump attendants checking the registration or will the attendants be trained to judge a car's age going by the looks. In the latter case best Delhiites should get their cars nicely detailed and polished so that they look new .

The OP has quoted an article in which the transport minister has been quoted saying they will install a gadget. So obviously there won't be any physical verification required, by attendants or anyone else. Though it is not clear what kind of a gadget will be installed and whether it is possible to install such a gadget in all the petrol stations by 31/Mar/2025.

"We are installing gadgets at petrol pumps which will identify vehicles older than 15 years, and no fuel will be provided to them," Sirsa said, adding that the Union Ministry of Petroleum will also be informed about the decision.

Haha! what a joke of a rule/policy.

How did they even think that the pretol bunk owners and attendants are going to lose on their sale for no mistake on their part. They will happily provide petrol/diesel to all cars without even checking until and unless some automated system is put inplace with no human intervention. (which is impossible even in a decade in India).

Isn't plying of such vehicles already prohibited in DL? And if one is not driving, then why & how will one fill petrol in that vehicle?
