'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

If you’re a motorsports fan, you’ve probably heard of an extremely talented young lad who made his debut in Formula 1 in 1984 and went on to win three World Driver’s Championship titles. Of course, we’re talking about Ayrton Senna – one of the legends of Formula 1.

A new mini-series titled ‘Senna’ is now airing on Netflix. The 6-part series showcases the Brazilian F1 driver’s triumphs and disappointments, his personality and personal relationships, and more.

The mini-series is based on the legendary driver’s motor racing career which began with Formula Ford, right up to the tragic accident which took his life during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.

Gabriel Leone plays the role of Ayrton Senna. Matt Mella plays Alain Prost, Patrick Kennedy plays McLaren team principal Ron Dennis, Steven Mackintosh is in the role of Williams boss Frank Williams, and Tom Mannion will play FIA doctor Professor Sid Watkins.

I preferred the documentary. I thought they rushed through the editing; the FX et all made the watch unenthusiastic and literally pause it. The Tyson-Paul fight was better, if you know what i mean.
The money spent on copyright itself; they could've released this better.

Good thought, poorly executed.

One that I was really looking forward to, and will start watching tonight!

But BHPian reviews aren't convincing. There is Boomerang's opinion above, and here's jomyboy from another thread:

What the hell did I just watch. Its like watching world war 2, and Hitler is a saint and the entire world was conniving against him. As much as I love Schumacher, even I can't romanticize my hero idol to this degree.

Huge F1 and Mclaren fan, but giving this series a miss. Way too many documentaries have covered Senna's life in vivid detail, don't need another one. He was a great driver, but the amount of content and remembrances in his name is now out of control. I highly doubt anyone could do a better or a more definitive job than Asif Kapadia's documentary from 2010.

As we say in Kannada- "solpa jaasthi aithu".

Re: 'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

Breezed through 3 episodes & I thoroughly enjoyed it . Would strongly recommend a watch to all BHPians. Reasons:

- Automotive shows & movies aren't exactly frequent. As a petrolhead, it's paying my respect to car movies / shows by watching them (unless intolerable like Fast X).

- The glorious sound of race engines. If you have a good home theatre setup, crank the volume knob up.

- Decent to good acting by all involved.

- It's the story of an icon. Sure, the series does come across as greased at times, but it is still a thoroughly enjoyable one-time watch. Won't go down in the "greats" like the movie Rush or the Senna documentary though.

- Episode 2 on Monaco is just spectacular!

- On Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton, Rossi & some other greats, I'll even watch a well-edited 15-minute YouTube clip. This, after all, is a 6-part show!

Overall was a good watch. Well shot and acted. Also always good to see stories about yesteryear icons.

On the downside, was quite one dimensional. Everything was only about Senna and the issues he faced and people opposed to him were shown almost as villains. Am sure Senna also had shades of gray. He was mostly painted as the victim. Even the changes he brought to the sport I don't think was well explored. Considering it was a 6 Episode series, could have packed in much more I felt.

I felt the Schumacher documentary was more well rounded.

Re: 'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

Being a F1 fan had to watch this series. Just finished the last episode yesterday night and it was enthralling. It also gives a inside view of how F1 management being unfair and biased.

As it was a short series I presume they had to edit to fit the episodes in the time frame but could have done better especially ending the last episode abruptly.

No doubt Aryton Senna was a legend

Re: 'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

Oh, it's nice to see this series has its own dedicated thread. I posted about it in the TV thread, but here are my impressions. First up, I'm not into Formula 1 at all, but I am into good cinema and TV, and this is among the best sports/biopic series/movies out there.

Some of the race scenes (especially when they show racing in the rain) will remind you of "Rush", that excellent movie about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Incidentally, both of those characters make a brief appearance in this series.

I liked the really good cinematography with period recreation, good editing, and the screenplay (not a minute wasted while not being jumpy). It is highly recommended, though I am only three episodes in.

Re: 'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

Almost binge watched the whole 6 episode series and I quite enjoyed it. They could have explored more but a job well done for what they have managed. Honestly you can never get enough of Ayrton Senna.

I had a peek at the behind the scenes and its fantastic how they have managed to make replicas of the classic F1 cars. They even used the engine sounds from the actual cars here. The Monaco sequences were awesome to watch too.

Good performances by the cast but funny how Prost was show like a sneaky movie villain.

Quite a few goosebumps scenes as well.

Another fact I liked was they used period correct road cars like the Mercedes 190E that Senna drove.

Worth a watch for sure.

Re: 'Senna' Mini-Series now airing on Netflix

The sheer grit, determination, and the killer indistinct for Senna were unparalleled. It was an enjoyable watch and I can imagine how tough it would have been for Gabriel Leone to copy Senna's body language. Real cars from the late 80s and early 90s were used for filming. The closeups were seamlessly linked with the actual footage at times. Lots of entertainment as well. Senna's been my childhood hero and I could never get enough of him in my early years!
