Reprinting PAN cards - Is it quite the ordeal that it seems to be?

So my 25 year old PAN card is soiled. One character on my DOB is not as legible. And a bank guy recently raised a fuss about it. And I have a property registration coming up so I don't want another fuss.

However, I have the epan printout ( that I have printed to a thick sheet and laminated ) which is clear and legible. Will this be legally acceptable anywhere instead of the plastic card we all get?

Anyway, I still tried to get it reprinted and went down a rabbit hole, got tired and stopped the process.

1. Tried reprint option on UTIITSL's site. Seemed to work well but midway I realized that the reprinted card would be dispatched to the address I lived when I got the PAN card 25 years ago. It seems that linking PAN and Aadhar isn't sufficient to update the PAN database with the new address.

2. I aborted the process midway to first change the address. I did the PAN address update online using Aadhar seeding. Worked well!

3. Next now I moved to reprint the card. But it now said, reprints cannot be done via that option now as I had changed my address online. It asked me to go through another option (correct details/reprint option).

4. I tried using it after spending an hour filling the form and attaching evidences, it failed saying that my Aadhar address was more than 120 characters. Now it says I have to do only the 'physical submission' mode.

5. Going to attempt it today, but really, is this the only way forward ? Is there a faster way ? Or do I even need the plastic card reprinted as I have the epan ?

What has been your experience?

If you have linked PAN to Digilocker, isn't that equally valid as physical PAN?

My PAN still reflects my address from 2 decades ago, and same as you mentioned it doesn't allow to copy over address from my linked Aadhaar due to character limitations. Hence I've given up.

Exactly my point. Just asking for an affirmation / if someone may raise a stink and cause trouble at an inopportune moment.

You can update your address and opt either for an E-PAN or get a new printed one to your current address. It will cost you 115-150RS I guess. Fairly quick process and I got mine delivered to my address in a week's time post address update

I really can't remember the last time I had to produce my physical PAN card anywhere. I scanned it/xeroxed it a long time ago and have been using those copies/online version for everything. KYC, bank work, property work, etc. Most of the time, just the PAN number is enough. So not sure why the condition of the original PAN card would really make a difference. (But I may not have thought of all the possible cases.)

My PAN card has developed a crack and I was thinking of getting it reprinted but looking at the OP's ordeal I am in two minds now. Even I have an address change to be done, will get hold of a reliable agent to get both the things done.

However you want to do things on your own, there are some issues which still need the services of an agent unfortunately.

I got a replacement PAN because I wanted to add my last name to make it same as AADHAR and it was a fairly simple process. Took about 10 mins to fill out the form and I got the card within a week. It had automatically taken my new address and even photo from Aadhar.

I too managed to get an updated PAN card using the portal. The payment failed a couple of times but eventually we t through. And the card arrived by speed post in a week or so.

There are technology laggards such as the following one, that, on the one hand do Video KYC, but on the other hand mandate you to have a physical PAN card.

Walk in to any xerox or document processing shop with e PAN and ask for a physical print out in card form. They will print it on proper plastic card and provide you for 50Rs. I did it for my daughter and the quality was better than the original one I had. No one can make out whether it is printed by NSDL or locally.

I got the PAN reprinted and delivered to my AADHAR linked address last month. My old PAN address is far away. Fairly easy process. I think there is something amiss or you made some mistake. Got it printed from UTITSL itself.

This is the real answer. One must always have a physical PAN card and duly signed in the back to be valid. I came to know of this recently when I applied for a Credit Card.

On the other hand, I had no issues in going to the portal and updating the address, photo etc deriving from Aadhaar, and got the printed card in a weeks time.

re: Reprinting PAN cards - Is it quite the ordeal that it seems to be?

It is better to keep the address in PAN database updated and correct. Now most of the notices from the Income Tax Department is sent by Email. But physical copies of all income tax notices will be sent to the address in PAN database only. If the email on record is the one with a previous employer and the address is 25 years old and incorrect, there is a possibility that you may miss notice from the department.

re: Reprinting PAN cards - Is it quite the ordeal that it seems to be?

I recently got my PAN replaced and it got shipped to my aadhar address with new photo everything taken from aadhar. It took around 3 weeks for the new card to reach my permanent address. I don't even know what my PAN old address was and it was linked to Bangalore sub section and the last I lived in Bangalore was in 2010. But it reached properly to my aadhar address in Kerala.

re: Reprinting PAN cards - Is it quite the ordeal that it seems to be?

First, thanks to the OP for creating this thread. My concern is similar but slightly different to the topic.
To start my ordeal, a close relative from our village lost their new PAN card last month. Adding to that, they have not used it anywhere and possess neither the PAN number nor any sort of copies or even the acknowledgement number.
The agent who applied for PAN, initially said that he would apply for a re-print. When approached the next day, he said that he could not do anything in this matter.
What could be done now and has anyone been in a similar situation?
