What's the best way to get Top News Headlines in 10 minutes in India?

I have loved the Times of India Daily Newsletter. For years, that email with the Top 10-12 headlines was my way of being tuned in to current affairs. It picked the best news & had superbly crafted summaries. Times Top 10 was indeed the best newsletter, and this is coming from someone who also subscribes to Bloomberg, NYTimes etc.

Sadly, TOI has terminated that daily newsletter due to (presumably) cost cutting:
Quote:
Dear Reader,

A note: There will be no Times Top10 edition from tomorrow. We hope to revive the newsletter in the near future in a newer, improved avatar. Until then, so long and thank you for reading.
- What is the best way to get headline news in 10 minutes?

- Without visiting multiple sources?

- And without looking at a page with 50 news articles (e.g. the ugly TOI homepage)? It's easy to drown in information overload on that kind of news page.

- Just looking at a short & sweet summary of news headlines. Give me 10 important news happenings instead of 50 less important ones.

Thanks!

Google discover on mobile phone is good source for checking quick news from various sources we have been interested in. Available on left swipe of home screen on most Android mobiles.

Similar thing is nowadays available on Windows OS as well where headlines from various news sources are available at one place.

Google News remains the best option. But here, we need to avoid the 'for you' section - because it is customized based on your interests. We don't want that! Instead, go to Google News -> Headlines

You can also see the top India/World/Business/Sports etc category news too.

For the web, this is the link to Google News headlines:

You beat me to it
Google News has been the source of 'top news' for me since many years now.
I just browse through 'Headlines' tab in from my mobile app and browse through 'Local News' section from browser for local news.

Note: Strangely, I don't see 'Headlines' in the browser and 'Local News' section in my mobile app.

My previous post has the link for 'headlines' in the browser. Local News section in the mobile app is under 'For You' tab. You just have to scroll down a little:

I wouldn't dismiss the "For You" section quite so easily. The customisation algos are pretty good. Sometimes I get T-Bhp links in the "For You" section of the app .

"Local News" shows up in the "For You" section of the app.

My go to app for news headlines has been Inshorts. You can customize your areas of interest like daily round-up, sports, entertainment, world affairs etc and the news headline feed comes in based on this selection. There's no 'personalized' curation based on your browsing history, which for me is a good thing.

Do check it out.

Re: What's the best way to get Top News Headlines in 10 minutes in India?

I’ve been through my share of Inshorts, google news and digital papers but what I have been using for the past couple of years is just reading two newsletters which come on my Mail :-

1) The New York Times Morning Brief - Keeps me updated on International affairs. Plus it has a few games if you have some more time on your hand.

2) The Daily Brief newsletter - More on national news but covers the major international affairs as well. It covers two to three major news items in detail and gives crisp write ups on others which you can visit to read in more detail.

All in all I can finish reading both of the above in 10 mins or so, which is pretty good in cases of cramped days.

Also both are absolutely free and also mostly free of annoying advertisements

The disadvantage is that both run from Monday to Friday so you do miss out on any big news event on weekends. Although these are covered on Monday.

Sharing a screenshot of the daily brief newsletter :-

Will this help - https://inshorts.com/en/read

Or this? Best part being, we only have to listen while doing the chores

And ofcourse, this is something everyone knows & has endless customization to it

Looks like I am an old school here. My preferred way to get the morning bite of news is physical newspaper itself. If in a hurry, can go through headlines only, if time permits, go on with a long read. The morning tea plus newspaper combo is something I look forward to every morning.

Over many months and years, I use these two app to keep myself updated.

InShorts - I seldom find myself missing any news on any front.
Feedly - This is an RSS feed app. I've a curated niche of topics and publications to keep myself updated. Including local news.

Both are free

I go to https://www.msn.com/en-in which is set-up as default page on Edge browser for me.
Then have a click glance through daily briefings by pressing the 'next slide' arrow 15-20 times.

Interestingly, I find The Economic Times, newspaper with its characteristic, reddish colored paper every morning, an absolutely relevant source of general and political news... I don't read much of the financial part of it, but I've been getting it delivered to me for the last 25 years ... Love the summary of the important and relevant news - of India - for India - and by India(ns) to paraphrase a famous slogan

I subscribe to the Splainer!

You get:
  1. An in-depth article on a monday morning + interesting reads
  2. An email daily with the headlines and links to the sources
  3. An advisory on the weekend on music, a location guide, books
