Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?-screenshot-20240810-9.48.108239pm.png

Keeping track of time is crucial for success, and we often rely on watches to do so. There are two main types of watches: digital and analog.

Personally, I prefer an analog watch. It provides a sense of the current time in relation to the entire day or night, allowing me to quickly gauge how much time is left by visually interpreting the angle between the watch's hands. In contrast, a digital watch simply displays the current time without this broader context.
Digital watches watch provides features such as date, timer, stopwatch etc,

So, BHPians, which type of watch do you prefer and why?

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Thread moved from the Assembly Line to Shifting Gears. Thanks for sharing!

IMHO, for sheer art, design & style, nothing beats analog watches. I have a great collection of watches & enjoy wearing them on social outings:

On the other hand, on a daily basis when I'm working, I wear an Apple Watch. Nothing beats a digital smartwatch for functionality (I use it for health monitoring). Even in terms of style, my girl has the Apple Watch Ultra; once she slaps on a designer strap, she wears it for social outings over her more expensive branded analog watches. But still, my preference is analog over digital for the look & feel.

Clocks? Analog again. Let's see anyone beat this bad boy in my office

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Watches:

For everyday wear, I’ve started enjoying wearing proper analog watches. I only started this very recently (like 6 months ago) - have started out with a collection of 3 watches, two dressy ones and one rougher field watch but hope to build this up slowly over the years.

I use a Garmin heavily for monitoring actual workouts and I try and use it while sleeping for monitoring sleep metrics but I’ve stopped wearing it for tracking time. I might use it as a single watch for some rough traveling though where it serves both purposes.

Clocks:

I don’t pay attention to this much but personally I’d prefer a digital clock just for the visual ease etc and not having to be concerned about tracking the accuracy etc of an analog clock.

To me, the clock is pure function over form while the daily wear watch is now heavily form over function (except for Garmin I wear for function during workouts).

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

What do you do when you cannot decide? I love my regular analog watches but I also want to keep track of my steps, sleep cycle etc.

So I wear both.

A regular watch on my left wrist, and a fitbit smart band (not a watch) on my right. I don't care if it comes across as weird, I love both.

All the clocks we have at home are analogs.

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Maybe I should not respond itself, but having no preference is also an answer I guess.

Watches: I have no real interest in watches. Always had one Casio watch for the longest time. General preference has been digital, but don't mind analog also. Currently also only own one smartwatch where most of the time I keep a watch face that is digital, occasionally switch to an analog face. I also have another fossil watch, only because someone gifted it to me. Rarely wear it. Yes, I wear the same smartwatch for any occasion and with any attire. I know it will sound ridiculous to most, but hey, that is what I do.

Clocks: Prefer analog for wall clocks. Only reason is that such clocks are seen from a distance and analog makes it easy to view. Large digital displays look weird. No longer use smaller clocks as the phone covers that use case.

I specifically prefer this particular clock model:
https://www.amazon.in/Ajanta-Quartz-.../dp/B00P4GHMUQ

Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?-screenshot_5.jpg

Has everything you need in one glance (Full date, day of the week, time) - including the all-important room temperature data. However, it needs its own wall socket power supply. Couple of AA batteries are there, but they just ensure that the clock/calendar is not reset when power supply goes.

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Voted digital. I don't have any strong preference on wall clocks but when it comes to watches, it is always digital, non-AMOLED watches. I like a watch face that include seconds. I derive some sort of satisfaction by joining online meetings on the dot. I hit "join call/join meeting" at HH:(MM-1):57 seconds so that I exactly login to the meeting scheduled at HH:MM:00. Even the clock on my desktop shows seconds. The more the data fields the watch has without compromising on readability, the better.

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

I prefer to use digital clocks. But I have experienced that even reputed brands in India are not accurate. Time start drifting within few days and they are as bad as old generation winding type clocks ! Fed up with these cheap products, I decided to convert a old mobile phone to a clock. I found needed app and also did many tweaks to this phone to work as perfect clock which will not drift even 1 second because I have an app that keep syncing this to atomic clock standards ! I use this phone clock as wall clock at home. I also built another standalone LED clock that has a design (chip set) with very minimum drift

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Watches
- Analog options pull my strings like nothing else. I initially started focusing towards automatics and solar driven options; but I'm guessing the simplicity and reliability of a Quartz watch is winning me back.
- Digital option is only for my sports. The ease of doing my long runs with just a smartwatch is fantastic; but I end up carrying my mobile out of habit (or other or unavoidable reasons). It's more of a good to have; but not a necessity.

Clocks
- Analog for wall clocks. Purely because there are so much options in this area (e.g. cuckoo clocks) and I still haven't found a reason for the additional information that a digital clock provides to be made available on a wall clock.
- Digital works better for bed-side table clocks (e.g. alarm function) or for the kitchen (e.g. for timers, etc.)

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

About a year back, all I wore was analog watches and real heavy ones at that. Now I wear a smartwatch after getting to experience the functionality and multiple functions that a watch of this type has.

Cheers

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

I prefer Analog watches. Have a few in my collection which I rotate but most weekdays I wear my Seiko mechanical watch. Digital watches are like a gadget and I really do not wish to charge my watch. I wouldn't mind wearing an Apple Watch to the gym, provided someone gifts it to me!

Voted for digital or smart watch.

When it comes to watches, I prefer good design and look rather than brand name. I wore analog watches for a long time, but now, I use a digital or smart watch for ease of use. Additionally, you can change watch faces or try different looks for your smart watch whenever you want.

We are in very similar boats. I had been using an Apple watch primarily for the last 4-5 years, but very recently kind of got over it. My friends getting into the hobby of watch collection also must have contributed to me getting drawn back towards analogue watches. I am starting with 5 watches. An existing Apple watch which I rarely wear now, an already owned watch and 3 new in the collection. 3 for office/dressy ones and 1 basic G-shock for rougher and regular use.

CHEERS!!

Re: Analog Vs Digital Watches & Clocks | Your preference?

Both have their own charm.

Own an analog Casio Edifice with a silver steel strap (it was bought simply as a goal when we visited Singapore, as I never really saw these "flashy stuff" during my studies). That was a nice accessory when I would be driving in a car to the functions - now it has become sort of a hassle as the strap vibrates thanks to my bike. Will probably be my only dressy watch until I get something like that Tag Heuer watch that GTO displayed. A big fan of a well designed, leather strap analog watch.

Got into smartwatches when I got a FitBit Versa 2 during my weight loss journey, to track steps, calories, sleep etc, but the performance started degrading barely a year into usage. Now, my daily is a BoAT Xtend gifted by my company for the last 3 years and itching to upgrade to the Apple Watch Ultra asap.
