Re: With Paytm gone, which is the best prepaid e-wallet?

The Rupay credit card has rendered the wallet as redundant actually. There is now need of wallet. Get a Rupay credit card and link it to the UPI front ends such as Paytm, PhonePe, Gpay etc and keep charging the smaller denominations to the Rupay CC. For bigger expenses, there is always a Bank Credit card.

What I found after a few attempts is - a PhonePe wallet works when the shopkeeper has a PhonePe QR code. If he has a PayTM QR code, then it goes to UPI payment route

Does this have a 16 digit number like other CC's ? And Similar documentation to get a card ? If yes, then I would prefer not to add another card. (I actually cancelled one card recently as part of my consolidation)

Yes, wallets are linked to the vendor's QR. Similar to PayTM when they had a wallet active.

With UPI lite, which is like a wallet, there is no need for any Vendor specific wallet. I wonder why the PhonePe wallet even exists with the advent of UPI Lite?! PayTM wallet had an added advantage of Fastag using the amount from the wallet. UPI Lite suffices for all small transactions.

But not all merchants have an active wallet to pay to.

Also, PayTM no longer has a wallet now, so any PayTM QR code is only UPI payment. That;s what I am trying to say.

Yes, its like any normal credit card. If you have a credit card already with reputed banks like HDFC, ICICI, SBI etc, then you should get the rupay cc relatively easy without any additional documentation. I have got a virtual Rupay CC from HDFC, no need to carry another CC in the wallet, have linked to all major UPI gateways and smaller denominations no longer appear in the bank statement. Was happy to see a clean & less cluttered bank statement. The only grouse is the UPI pin needs to be entered during every transaction to Rupay CC. In case of wallets that was not the case.

My upi usage is mostly to transfer small amounts to different vendors directly. Can you do that with the rupay cc?
For shops I use regular visa cc.

Many vendors have disabled acceptance of UPI payments through Rupay credit cards.

The vendor needs to configure their UPI id to receive payment by credit card also. Most shops would be doing that but small time vendors like veggies/fruits/flowers etc would not know that and may not have done that.

I am not very sure if the transactions charged to Rupay CC is immediately deposited to vendor accounts or there is a delay as seen in the normal CC. Also not sure if any merchant charges are being levied for Rupay transactions.

It's the other way round. I belive the rupay credit card payment is enabled by default for merchants and they need to disable it if they want to.

There are charges deducted from the customer payment and that's the reason many merchants are now disabling the rupay credit card payments.

Re: With Paytm gone, which is the best prepaid e-wallet?

I was looking for a wallet which can be used in multiple devices with the same account.
Tried Mobikwik Pocket UPI which does not require a bank account. Account opening was very simple and quick. The interface is good and easy to use. It works on multiple devices as I wanted.
Sadly amazon pay wallet is dependent on the device and can be used only on one.
