There is some truth in that, but it is not the whole truth.

Things may go wrong. And it is true that, if and when they do, some dogs will do a lot more damage. There are dangerous dogs, and the whole thing cannot be disposed of with reference to the humans.

There also humans who don't know how to handle dogs properly, of course. And with some dogs, they might get away with it but with other dogs they may not.

It is also not just a matter of large size. In fact large dogs can be much more placid than small ones.

My London friend had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She was huge (the dog, that is) and incredibly heavy. When I was there she would abandon her person and sleep on my bed. And if I did not stake my claim to the covers before she jumped on the bed, that was it: she was immovable . And the gentlest thing imaginable.

True that, as is this guy, a true blue gentle giant.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I read all the points and counter points , There is definitely risks with large breeds of certain temper especially in terms of crowded urban dwellings, having one enter an apartment lift could cause concerns.

But while crafting such regulations , I hope the authorities take into account the out of town , rural and suburbs where there is ample space and more importantly there is plenty of need for guard dogs, as working dogs for a purpose. Some of those large breeds are perfect for such utility.

Yes but its also a fact from countless studies that some breeds are inherently more risky because dogs were bred for different purposes unlike humans. And when something does go wrong with a dog, then these risky dogs have the potential to cause more damage. Assume a human group bred solely as hunters for example vs. one group bred for endurance racing.

Out of the 23 listed bar Staffies, Rotties and perhaps at a stretch Pitties all others are NOT for your usual dog owner. I reread the list and they're outright dangerous for an average pet parent and most if not all of these breeds are outlawed in many western countries.

Coming to the topic of guard dogs, there are plenty of native breeds like the Mudhol Hound or Rajapalayam for example which can do really well.

As with any blanket ban there are pros and cons, but here the pros far outweigh the cons.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I think the real problem lies with the people owning dog breeds that are aggressive. In India there are no rules enforced on pet owners. I have borne the menace caused by unruly and untrained dogs next door where they used to bark endlessly causing nuisance throughout the day. Besides that uncourteous owners making the dog poop around anywhere they feel like, near car tyres, house main entrance and middle of the road, the list is just endless.

Having lived in the US and observed how strict the laws are around keeping pets, I think we should have more regulations around that.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I've had dogs at home almost all my life (i'm old ..er), including two German Shepherds (the best doggies in the world, obviously ). And in that time I have learnt a lot about their behavior.

With that knowledge and experience, I see cognitive biases written all over this thread:
"My dog is not ferocious, therefore ALL dogs of that same breed are not ferocious".
"Dogs are perfect creatures, therefore ANY and ALL incidents related to dogs are the human's fault".

You know, just like most humans are sometimes moody, unpredictable and illogical, most doggies are too. And just as some human beings are more aggressive than others, some doggies are too.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Some dog breeds are a little bit more ferocious than others, it’s true no argument there especially breeds like Pitbull and Cane Curso. Better than a ban would have been more stringent conditions for one to own these breeds and to monitor the purpose they are bought for in the first place as these are not your friendly neighbour hood Labrador and even going for a simple walk with them can turn out to be a nightmare with things quickly escalating to go out of control especially if they are in the hands of a novice similar to the case of automobiles, it’s just like buying a Hayabusa or Zx10r as a first bike, proper training is a must especially for these breeds but in contradiction there are some people who just buy them for bragging rights which is the core issue.

Sad to see Rottweiler make it to the list , always loved them, friend gave me one as a puppy years before when i was in high school, bought it home and told parents it’s a Dachshund (because of the Rott’s notorious image even back then)but then the lie was exposed when a relative came for a visit who knew a thing or two about dogs and swore to my mom that it was a Rott and not a dachshund, mom immediately made me give it back to the friend but then i saw it coming because in three months it was going to be evident.True German brutes they are at the same time can just be adorable as a Lab but not for nor to everyone.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Rotties are lovely in the right hands and I agree they should not be in that group with Kangals, Dogo Argentinos, Tibetan Mastiffs, Cane Corsos etc.

I often think they get a bad rep for how they look.

The 23 should / could have been a progressive list:
1. Allowed for civilians but with checks (registration mandatory for Rottweilers for example)
2. Not allowed for civilians but for organisations (Tibetan mastiffs could be used by the ITBP for example)
3. Not allowed (breeds suited for dog fighting)

Overall a blanket ban means
A. There will really be a stop in breeding these, which is good for most civilians
B. There will be illegal or underground breeders. I think this will still happen but without KCI certification hopefully in very small numbers

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I have read in several cases in kerala ( from newspapers) the drug runners, ganja people all used to keep pitbulls and rottweiler and the stuff was hidden in their kennels. And when the police went to raid them these dogs were let loose on the police force.

These kind of behaviour forces the public to turn against dogs however exotic they may be. Dogs used for the wrong purpose unfortunately.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

My uncle got a Rottweiler at his farm in 2021. The pup was just 4 months old when we visited and already looked massive for that age but I am not familiar with that breed so may be it is natural. At night, as is the ritual we slept out in the verandah and all night I could hear his paws making tuck-tuck-tuck sound as he paced everywhere.

Around 6am I woke up and was standing by my bed. This dude came from somewhere and grabbed my ankle! I was startled but realized it was just a play-bite did not try to wiggle away (a strict no). I grew up with dogs yet this was surprising as he ambushed me skillfully. I kept calm as he looked at me let go but remained sitting at my legs. Clearly no harm was meant but scary enough. Definitely did not expect this first thing in the morning. Later that day he did the same with my cousin as he was feeding cows. I have a feeling this breed needs training to curb their bite-y nature?

May be it is unpredictable nature of these dogs that make people wary of them. If it was some small kid instead of me I am pretty sure the kid would have been scared sh*tless, possibly injured as even for a 4 month old, the pup had considerable strength in his jaws and massive paws.

2 years later my cousin now tells me he has stopped biting people. I don't know. I am gonna be careful next time I visit their farm.

A picture of him from same morning.

I could not endorse this enough, I wish everyone understands this. These fur balls are bundles of love and joy.

I can relate to this very well. I was not a cat person until I got introduced to a stray kitten 5 years ago. Now I (along with family and some neighbors) actively take care of many stray cats in our community. I feed and often pet them, I give them rubs. There are all kinds of food and treats at home. We have medicines handy. We have taken them to vet when needed, even rushed to emergency in middle of the night. I was able to save lives but I also lost some. I shed tears and even sobbed like a child. I got scratched (playfully), bit (accidentally), had to get rabies shots twice.
But for the life of me, I cannot ignore them. There is a sense of satisfaction and happiness in knowing that you are helping another living being. We just attended to one injured cat, a couple of hours ago. We set him up comfortably right next to our door.

My apologies. I understand I have gone off topic, but I just felt like sharing this. Cats have that charm, we just have to understand that they are not dogs.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Cats make you work to earn their trust and love. On the other hand dogs fall in love with you pretty easily and unconditionally. Even the stray dogs.
I think that is why when cats (stray cats even more so) show affection towards you it's more satisfying.

Might have something to do with:

- Size difference between humans & cats (vs humans & dogs)

- Stray dogs are used to human interactions all the time. Since birth, they see people all around them. But because of presence of stray dogs, cats cannot afford to be "seen" and human interactions are minimal.

- Since birth, stray dogs are directly (kindness) or indirectly (garbage bin) dependent on people giving food. Stray cat/kitten supplement food given by people with hunting (rats/birds/lizards/frogs/insects)

Firstly I feel pitty about those Dogs who are kept in apartments. Even a biggest size apartment is small for an animal like Dog. The result is aggressive behaviour of the animal resulting in bites. Atleast, Some breeds are just meant to be in the open spaces like farms etc. Keeping those breeds in apartments will only lead to ferocious behaviour of the pet. I cannot understand the role of a Doberman and German shepherd (even thought these breeds are not banned) in a closed apartment.

I have seen most of the people going out for office with Dog alone at home. The owners donot have enough time to attend the Dog resulting in dog getting aggressive.

I myself had a dog at my Parents home at Himachal Pradesh. Our house had a huge courtyard and a garden and the Dog was never prefered inside the house. He had a small room in the courtyard.
This kind of environment may be preferrable for a dog but in an apartment complex keeping a dog is actually not good both for the Dog and the neighbours.

The authorities cannot control the parenting techniques of the pet owners therefore banning is the option left out.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

I'm also a dog lover, not the trader or buyer kind, I'm more into feeding street dogs after our pet died a few years ago.
Here is my opinion on this topic:-

1. Some dog breeds are indeed more aggressive than others, but the first year of their life determines a lot about rest of their life.

2. Instead of banning a specific breed, controls should be put in place for dog traders/sellers (I don't call them dog-lovers, never). Registration should be mandatory and they should disclose all activites & material facts to local municipality.
And no puppy should ever be separated from the mother at birth, at least 6 months should be given.

3. Company matters a lot. Put a Retriever and a Pitbull together a few years, the Retriever will be little aggressive, while Pit will be a little docile.

4. A lot of other trends in the dog world, like risky/exotic breeding, anti-climatic breeding, etc. should be banned first. They're actually the bigger evil.

5. I'm fed up of high society cheapskates who buy aggressive guard dog breeds because hey, who can afford a human guard on regular duty?
Keep dogs only if you're ok expanding your "family", simple.
Keep dogs to give the gift of friendship to your growing kids.
Keep dogs as family.

6. If possible, adopt from street. Specially dogs who're abandoned by their owners, because these softies can't survive the street. This way you'll get a good breed.

Again, these are just random muses of a true dog lover, not likely to be enacted anytime soon, but I do hope something good happens.

They have a right to live, love, raise a family and enjoy the gift of life.
When you suggest banning a dog breed, please ban the breed that's causing most problems on Earth, yeah, human beings...
