First name and last name are interchanged on PAN. Tried submitting online application for name correction, but it gets rejected at the Aadhar e-verification stage because of name mismatch.

Apparently this can now be done only through PAN centres which have biometric device for Aadhar verification. If anyone has experience with this, please share some pointers.

Please visit your nearest PAN card facilitation centre. These centres also called TIN centres (Taxpayer Identification Number) are outsourced to private parties. Please fill up the form again with your correct name and submit all desired documents with the application in Form no. 49A ( for Indian citizens in India). Such documents can be self attested copies of your Aadhar card, school/10th/12th certificate and so on that record your correct name. And as a footer on the base of your new application form please mention the reason for submitting this fresh form 49A. Please list the annexures attached alongwith at the base of the form.

The staff is usually cooperative and duly help the desirous. Usually they do not ask you to return the existing PAN card . But the requisite fees of Rs 100 plus will have to be borne by you.

You can do the correction online https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/...erContact.html all by yourself as long as your aadhaar has correct information. I just corrected my interchanged-names on PAN last month after being incorrect for 15 years. If your aadhaar is incorrect, then better to get aadhaar corrected first at your nearest enrollment centre. My aadhaar also was incorrect, so I asked them to update it as per my passport.

PS: Before updating aadhaar, I did try updating PAN directly but failed as what I wanted on my PAN was not matching with the information on the aadhaar. So correcting aadhaar is necessary.

I had the same issue, and know many people who faced it.

The old paper form that was used for filing the PAN application had last name in the first column followed by middle name and first name. Anyone who fills the application themselves after reading the form will fill last name first, followed by middle name and then first name. But when the data was entered in the system the operators typed last name in to first name messing up names for a lot of people. Now immediately below the name in application, there was another column for Given name where you have to give the name that has to be printed on the physical PAN card.(this is more like display name) This was a single column and so everyone writes their proper name here. As a result the physical card comes with a proper name but the actual names in IT records remain interchanged. Since most people only verify their names in the physical card, this remained uncaught for many years until aadhar came along.

Easiest way to check if you are affected is to look up the pan details on IT website and see if your names are listed properly. There was a webpage for this and doesn't need a login, not sure if it still exists.

For the correction, in my case , I just had to raise an online request in NSDL/TIN website and ask for a change in name. Attach some id proof with proper name and that should do. I corrected my name in 2014, so I am expecting the process to be much simpler now.

There are 2 main aspects here:
[1] PAN does not allow just a single letter for lastname, whereas all other documents like Aadhar, DL etc do. This causes an issue for those whose names are a firstname followed by father's initial - they simply do not have a surname or lastname.
[2] Whether the person applying for PAN (someone from the corporate finance team in my case) or a data entry operator messed it up, the first and last names got interchanged in PAN.

Tried till now:
[1] Online name change application - gets rejected because of name mismatch with Aadhar.
[2] Spoke to a few PAN centers. They all mentioned that in the existing scenario, their system will also reject a name change application just like the online system did for me.


Heard about people who first updated their Aadhar name by expanding the initial and then usied that to correct their PAN name. But all the remaining documents like marksheets, certificates, DL etc continue to retain the old name. Not sure whether down the line, someone can claim that the markeheets/certificates/etc (having first name + father's initlal) and the Aadhar/PAN (having first name + father's initial expanded) belong to two different persons. Hence not keen to take this route.

Based on guidance received from a friend, decided to apply afresh and choose offlne mode for submitting documents (instead of e-verification which fails anyway for my scenario).

The system accepted the application mentioning that there is a partial match with Aadhaar demographic details, so additional proof is needed. Submitted the same,waiting to see how this goes.

Got it done!
For those whose Aadhaar has only an initial for surname and want to get interchanged names corrected in PAN, here are the steps:

1. Go to the UTIITSL website and navigate to "Change/ correction in PAN data". Choose "Physical" option and provide the details.
Pro tip: Ensure that apart from the fields (name) that you need corrected, all the other fields have exactly the same values as per your present ITD data.

2. The system will mention that there is a partial match in demographic data and seek that another document should be provided in support of the change requested. Choose an option accordingly (eg DL with same name as in Aadhaar).

3. Pay the fees. Print and complete the application, attach copies of the supporting documents (Aadhaar, PAN and any others that were specified when filling the application) and send by speed post or courier to the appropriate regional office of UTIITSL.

4. The UTIITSL website has a Track PAN option. Keep monitoring the progress of your application.

5. If any objections are raised, do the needful to send clarifications regarding the same. Contact the call center in case of any doubts - they are very helpful. Typically this would involve sending copies of documents or scanning a hand-written letter and sending by email to UTIITSL.

6. In case of delays, contact the call centre, email helpdesk or social media handles of UTIITSL.

As on date, Protean e-gov also is authorized to handle PAN-related applications. Probably the same can be done in Protean also, but the steps might be different.

PAN will not allow initials for last name, it has to be expanded.
The good thing is that even if Aadhaar does not have expanded initials, PAN can still be corrected using Aadhaar as proof.

Apparently the 5th letter of your PAN number is the 1st letter of your surname. So if we reverse the first and sur names in the PAN database it would break this "rule". Curious to know how/if this is allowed by system, because doing so would change the PAN number itself.

Yes, the system allows this but only via the "offline documents submission" mode. The PAN number remains the same.
