Thanks, I have come across many excellent models made by you all over the Internet. Looks like you have been building models for quite some time.

My model building is long behind me and was never at the level you have. But I did enjoy it immensely. I am still interested in model building as a hobby, especially planes and boats. I am lucky there are a number of excellent model building exhibition in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.

My model building these days is in engines, from metal, brass, aluminium and so on. I have build a number of plastic kits on engines too. (V8, VW Boxer, Volvo F16). Just started on a Wright Cyclone engine.

Last night I came across this total amazing range of kits:

I am a hardcore Apollo nerd, so I think I know what my wife should be getting me for Christmas. I am a little worried about the size of these models and how to paint them. I am not sure if you can just use a brush or have to use an air gun.

1/72 BAe Hawk Mk.132 of the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team

The BAe Hawk Mk.132 was inducted in the Indian Air Force on 23 February 2008. The IAF received 24 Aircraft directly from BAE Systems and a further 42 were assembled by Hindustan Aeronauticals Limited.

Surya Kiran (Rays of the Sun) is an aerobatics demonstration team if the Indian Air Force. The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team was formed in 1996. the team used to fly the HAL HJT-16 Kiran Mk.2 Aircraft before being disbanded in 2011. The team was resurrected in 2015 on the HAWK Mk.132.

The kit used in the build is a 1:72 Airfix Kit. Its a decent kit, it came with British and Indian markings, though I did not end up using the Kit decals. There were no fit issues and was built mostly out of the box. I did print my own decals, the roundels and fin flash were from bright spark. Colors used were a local Camel brand art acrylics.

Re: DIY: Scale Models built using Plastic Kits

Gorgeous model

Lovely airplane the Hawk. Still in use by the famous Red Arrows to date. (Different version though I believe)

My Brother in law was involved in the deal with India on the Hawk. Part of the problem was it needed quite a bit of re-engineering, part due to Indian Requirments, but also, due to the fact that the Americans had put restrictions on sale of certain products and sales. So it became a bit of a rip and replace.

Could you elaborate on the print ting of your own decals? How does that work, do you have special software to make and design the decals? Is there a database from which you can pull? What kind of printer/paper?

Thanks
Jeroen

Re: DIY: Scale Models built using Plastic Kits

Jeroen I used Corel Draw to make Suryakiran logo in English & Devanagari. and the serial number. I then went on to print it using a laser printer on a decal paper meant for laser printing. the Roundels & fin flash came with the kit

Hearty congratulations Foxbat. What a handsome aircraft with that weathered look. Your hardwork has paid off. And those photos are great. Wonderful outcome Comrade. Stalin is pleased. :-)

The MiG-29M would have made history but for the collapse of the USSR. Alas.
