SL @ 110 for no loss in 19 overs against the Aussies.
You spoke too soon and SL got jinxed.
From a probable 300+ they bundled out for 209.

Much needed for Australia. Hope the rain subsides and they are able to chase this down within 30 overs. The World Cup is just not conceivable without an Australian side right up there in the thick of things. A big win for them to follow up England’s loss to Afghanistan will open up the tournament.

That's why it's better to test commenting on other sides.

The standings table does look odd with the Aussies bottom of the list @#10.

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup

Am I the only one who thinks that this World Cup has generated the least overall interest so far? Its an absolute ho-hum affair. Honestly I think the game needs a few new major countries/ teams to really step up and create some excitement. Right now it is becoming a family affair of sorts because everyone plays everyone else regularly and all teams are in awe of the wealth and fame of the Indian team.

I agree. The ICC World Cup is on, and here in Australia no one talks about it. Different story the team lost 2 games and won 1, but even then 0 interest among folks at work.

Only reason I tuned in is to watch the India vs Pakistan game, and that's about it.

I think the matches have been exciting enough, or at least as exciting as any other WC at this stage. I mean there have been low-scoring matches, Australia at the bottom of the table, home team recovering from a very shaky start and going on to win a match, a minnow upsetting the defending champion, matches with huge totals.

With previous world cups, not much else matched the intensity. Now test match cricket is providing some intense match-ups and results. The WTC is generating WC vibes. Then there's always the IPL.

I think we've all just had an overdose of cricket. Had to happen at some point.

Edit: Perhaps the availability of easy streaming/live updates on phones is also contributing to the unapparent excitement? I can follow the match without interrupting my life now, while commuting, at work. I don't need to put my life on hold and sit down and watch the whole match anymore. So perhaps it's moved from being a 8-hour viewing high to more of a background-buzz now.

I think the overall effect is due to this being an ODI World Cup. I mean in this age of TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Insta Reels who has the patience and bandwidth to spend 8-9 hours watching cricket esp. when nothing happens between overs 11-40 in both the innings.

This might very well be the last ODI WC to happen, so I definitely think India should win this and etch its name in history.

Very good point. I drummed up a lot of excitement within my family to watch the match between India and Pakistan together. Everyone was excited and then my daughter realised this is a 50 over game and runs over 8 hours! Time difference doesn't help either. She hit the bed just as India started batting.

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup

Can anyone please confirm if
1. its ok to carry binoculars to a world cup match in Bangalore?
2. Can you collect your physical tickets from the stadium on the match day? It will be a bummer to go all the way to CBD just to collect tickets.
3. Can you leave the match for a stroll or snack outside and re-enter? It can be a long test of patience otherwise.

This is the only 'official' ticket guidance I can find for what are pretty exorbitant prices. No mention of a helpline, no FAQ, no forum. And no e-tickets.

I notice outside food is 'strictly prohibited'. Of course due to security reasons.

On the contrary, while the entire cricket watching public (and some teams) think this way, I feel that is where games are being won and lost.

In yesterday's SL v Australia game, the game turned between over #25 to #40 when SL went from a dominant position to a dire one.

Similar pattern was seen in the England Afghanistan game. The difference there was that Afghanistan could recover from that period in the between overs 40 to 50. England was all out by the time they reached 40.3.

India Pakistan game was also eerily similar. Pakistan was going great guns till 29.3 overs with just 2 wickets down. Then capitulated to 9 down by 40.1.

In the India v Australia game, Australia lost half their side between over #28 and 37 leading to the inadequate total that lost them the match.

The difference here is that it is now substantially easier to score faster during the period from 10-40 as compared to 40-50 due to the additional boundary rider in P3. Overs 30-40 are better suited to score faster compared to 40-50 so now the best bowlers come back to bowl their 2nd spells instead of taking over directly in the final 10. This has led to more wickets falling in this period and these game changing spells of play have led to newfound excitement that is happening prior to the start of the final 10.

It has made a greater portion of the 50 overs watchable but it has also made ODIs less conducive to TV watching. It was much easier earlier when we just had to follow what happened in the 1st 15 and the final 10 to understand what happened. The middle 25 overs, where nothing happened, could be conveniently ignored. Now we have to keep following the middle overs as well or else the turning point of the game could very well be missed.

Teams that understand this best and navigate this period better are going to win this World Cup.

Coming to the lowering attention spans. About a month back, I figured out how to stop the YouTube App from showing me any shorts. I only watch long format content now (that is a lot easier to consume with the premium subscription). Short form content is a big big waste of time at least for me and I would find 1 useful short video among about 150 shorts that I would watch. And it was very addictive! I was not in to this trend earlier but was slowly drawn in by YT shorts. I never had TikTok installed, rarely use Instagram and loathed it when my YouTube feed would be filled with these shorts. Now that they are gone, I am better off.

Off Topic .

Can you please share how to disable shorts in YouTube. I tried a few suggestions by Google but none worked. Even I want to get rid of the shorts in my feed. They are distracting.

None of these are new concerns tbh. And some possible reasons for the lower interest has been discussed here earlier. BCCI or ICC, this time around has messed up big time as organizers.

Its got to do with the format - 50 overs. Make it into two 25 over innings with option to follow on, based on score in first innings, then it will get interesting. The God of Cricket 'SRT' has even prescribed this .

Link

Even reduces the effect of toss to some extent. That should make it interesting.

Based on my experience in Dharamsala during Ban - AFG match:
1. Do not carry the binoculars. A police person was not allowing me to take my car key inside. I had to show him that its a car key of a Maruti car. Only mobile, car keys were allowed inside. The checking was very thorough.

2. Cant comment on this as we got the tickets via post/courier from bookmyshow.

3. No one is allowed to leave the stadium else we can not re-enter. The stalls are located within the stadium and one can eat there after paying the money saved during Big Billion Day sale/ Great Indian Festival.

We had a good breakfast before entering the stadium so we did not feel the need to have any of the overpriced stuff being sold.
