Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Got a text which shows from IndiaPost requesting to reconfirm the address for a failed parcel delivery and a fake URL for address confirmation. These folks are getting more innovative daily..

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I received a call today from +917045462570 with an automated voice saying there was a problem with my DHL parcel.
I pressed 9 and some to the agent. When he mentioned that my parcel contained drugs, I told him that my friend want to use drugs, so I sent him some. Call disconnected

I’m reading the responses to the scammers and chuckling away! Haha
Nothing more fun than unloading all sorts of hell on the scammers.
Hope my colleagues don’t think I’ve gone mad crunching numbers as am looking at the phone and laughing

ohhh! This made my day.

More power to you,brothers/sisters! May the force be with you

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I hate talking on the phone and don't answer unknown numbers unless I am expecting a call. So, my phone is graveyard of missed calls. My reasoning is that if it's really important, person would text/WhatsApp/email and I can call back. I have been trying to get the voicemail working but its hit or miss so far.

It's easier to spot scam when you are not live with another person. You can notice the subtle queues and avoid getting scammed.

I have got a few of these automated calls from some of these scammers
  • FedEx : Got this call a few times in the past 6 months. Though I block the number each time, the next time it comes is from a different number. So many people have been affected by this. Every week, there is at least one news appearing in news paper regarding this.
  • Telecom department : The mobile number will be blocked in 2hrs - I think I have got this twice in the last one month. This seems to be a new scam.
  • Bombay high court : Got a call once

But it was fun. I had never spoken so much Hindi abuses ever in my entire life till that day. Whew!.
I think everyone should use these golden opportunities to relieve some stress. Plus you keep them occupied for a while longer as these guys can't help but absue back, so you hold them on the phone longer, saving some poor victim.
Let this be India version of stress/anger room instead of mobbing random strangers involved in accidents as is the Indian way.

Truecaller is giving out this message since today morning. It’s good to see this scam being acknowledged and social media platforms doing their bit.

Well Truecaller is the original source of data for all these scamsters. These are guys who have stolen your data from your friend and family. Unfortunately truecaller fetches all contact information from any installed device and makes it searchable by others, whether the owner of such information has provided consent or not.

None the less social engineering is the best form of scam attack.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Just yesterday my wife got a very genuine looking SMS saying Rs 10k has been transferred to her account, followed up by a phone call informing her that her husband Mr Nk (giving my correct name) has asked to transfer 13k to her account and he will transfer the balance 3k immediately. She then gets another SMS that 30k had been transferred to her account, followed up again by a call that 30k was an accident and it was supposed to be only 3k, so she should transfer 27k back to him.

My lovely wife calls me to fire me for asking random people to transfer money to her account. I had to calm her down and explain that I have done no such thing. In the meanwhile the crook is blasting her phone with missed calls. When she answers the phone and tells him my husband knows nothing about it, he talks to someone at his end and then says it was meant for another Mr Nk's wife and she should transfer back 40k and keeps insisting that she do it immediately else he will complain to the cops.

My wife is all ready to transfer 40k to him and it took an effort on my part to convince her that she should transfer nothing. I told her to check her bank account to see if there were any credits, and there were non. It was only then she realised it's a scam and agreed to not transfer anything. Till then she was arguing with me how we can keep somone's money and we should transfer back the money right away before the cops got involved.

Shouldn't be too honest without verifying.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I got a call from an unknown number. This was an automated message saying some 50000 rupees have been spent on my credit card and asked me to press 1 to confirm the transaction or press 9 to speak to a customer care executive if this was not an authorised transaction from my side. I knew that this was a spam call since I didn't have any credit card with the last 4 digits that the IVR mentioned.

But this seems to be another variant of fraud call.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Life is funny. Just as I was reading the post above, I got a call from a non-spam number IVR, saying that my parcel from DHL is undelivered and to press 1 to connect to DHL (obviously, a scammer at other end). Being aware of this scam, I immediately cut the call. Saying even "hello" on the call could be dangerous these days, since we never know if our voice could be recorded and cloned using A.I., to produce it as if it is us talking.

Given the extent of tele-scamming these days, just think if a spammer is able to speak local languages of many states, how many people could be scammed.

That's so true. We need to inform our near and dear ones to first check bank account or at least consult someone in the family before taking any action involving money or responding to threatening callers.

Being aware and watchful is the only way to prevent such frauds.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Instead of innovating in science and technology, they are innovating in how to scam people. I shudder to think what will happen with rising unemployment coupled with scorching inflation. When a large number of people do not find any legal means to make both the ends meet, it is a recipe for proliferation of crimes. A very tough problem without any solution in sight.

Some Customer care app got installed which surely could be a remote app.

As soon as i installed it, i realised this was a scam since the so called MNGL was overtly helpfull.
I cut the phone and switched off my phone wifi.
The guy called me twice asking "phone kyu cut kiya"! So sweet of MNGL

I told him you can cut my connection, after which he with a disaapointing tone cut the call.
Had to Factory reset my phone as a precaution.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Scamming has become now so common these days.

Just the other day I overheard my wife saying to a similar call that she received "Please don't disconnect this call before you hear me out and tell me honestly with such good communication skills, can't you get a better job? Do your parents know what you do for a living?"

Result?
The caller hung up.
