Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Looks like courier company executives are involved as they're calling guys who should receive/or sent a parcel.

I'm starting to think the same too. I received a parcel a couple of weeks ago, and I too got 2-3 automated calls about issues with a parcel. I have informed my entire family about the same and asked them to cut any such call.

Looks like "Fedex" has become too hot for these scamsters. Got a call yesterday saying they were calling from DHL!

Sigh...

One more scam resulting in a loss of INR 85 Lakh to a retired professional. People are losing their life time savings, left, right and centre....Govt has to do something about these frauds now.

A retired senior executive of a multinational firm was coerced into paying ₹ 85 lakh by a gang posing as CBI, customs, narcotics, and income-tax officers - all on Skype

In this day and age of information overload; news and modus operandi about how such frauds are taking place is everywhere, be it in newspaper, social media, WhatsApp, news channels etc. Govt is sharing helpline numbers and also giving ads about not sharing personal financial info with strangers or fall for get rich overnight schemes. However, either greed or fear is making people lose sight of common sense and fall for such scams. Irony is that most of the FedEx type scams are happening with educated class who, I'm sure, would have been aware of such things via some form of communication. But still people are falling for the same old trick

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Just received a call from Customs IVR which asked me to press 9 for further details as I have gotten into a trouble. I just held on thinking it would transfer me to a human. Suspected right from the beginning.

I pressed 9 and then somebody mentioned that he is calling from Delhi Customs and asked my name. I declined to reveal my name saying that he should tell me as he called me. He insisted that I reveal my name as he can let me know the case details based on that.

I insisted he should provide by name along with details and asked for his ID. He gave me a 6 digit ID. Then, later on he mentioned that he would meet me in the next 2-3 days personally and then reveal more information on the case. I asked for his address so that I can come and personally meet him to sort it out .

All this while, I dragged two of my colleagues into a meeting room and put it on speaker. He warned that trouble awaits and then I should be careful. Awaiting his personal presence.....

I called back that number and nobody responded.

Going slightly OT, increasingly noticing the criminals getting bolder and audacious by the day while scamming their victims.

Feels like our Moderators may consider updating this thread’s title to read as:
“Lost money to a very convincing conniving scam online”

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

Confession - I always wanted to take someone on with the filthiest of hindi abuses. Somehow, it isnt a habit and for a curd rice eating south indian, it is not something that comes naturally.

I found the perfect alibi when I received the scam call from Fedex. Went thru the first round of pressing the buttons in their IVR and the moment I had a human the other side, I knew that today is the day.

I typically acted very scared and acted as though I really needed all help and favours to escape this particular case. I gave them a wrong name (Ashok Chavan is what I told them my name was) and gave them a random Aadhar number too. They confirmed that the details are perfectly alright and wanted me to get onto skype with their 'Senior' police officers. I was pre-warned that they are there to help me and I need to treat them with respect and do exactly what they want me to do.

And I had my moment there. 10 minutes of non-stop, I invoked all their brothers and mothers and everyone else in their family. For one moment though, they did get shocked and looked bewildered, before one of them quickly gathered his nerves and tried abusing back.

But it was fun. I had never spoken so much Hindi abuses ever in my entire life till that day. Whew!.

I am very impressed. I will make a word document with the choicest Hindi abuses, follow it up with some Kannada, Tamil, Konkani and Tulu abuses. End with more Hariyanvi and Bhojpuri abuses.

Actually, I will have an audio file of above and play it to him while drinking coffee and eating Cadbury chocolate.

Well done. People make money out of such low level things that I cannot believe for any non Indian foreigner how much they are facing cheating when visiting India.
No wonder we are big time bad named outside India.

Re: Lost money to a very convincing scam online | Fraudsters posing as Fedex

I got this Fedex call as well not once but twice, In the first instance, the usual pretext, 'We are from Fedex, some parcel of your's in some country, freezed by customs, have narcotics element bla bla.. the best part is when you received the call, you'll first be prompted with Fedex IVR, so that's one way/reason why many falls/continue the call. They asked me whether im working for so n so company, which was indeed my previous employer and continued about your Aadhar used, parcel went out with your details, etc.. etc.
I asked the guy in other end, how do you know/how you say i involved here, when some random person used my Aadhar card for shipping and how i'll be responsible? today for each and everything we are submitting Aadhaar at many places.
Just some random idiot send some parcel using details from my Aadhar, you cannot connect me here. Show me proof, that this parcel reached fedex from my side then we can discuss further. The call got disconnected. This happened almost 8 months before and i was not aware of this scam till that day. Then subsequently post the call i checked truecaller, it was showing the number as spam and the Fedex site also not showing any contact number of the same series. Then google told me about this infamous scam.

The second call which went really nice, since i was already aware about this scam, this time when i attended the call, i allowed them to complete the initial pre-text it went for good 10 mins, then i asked. "Do you guys still doing this?? this mode of operandi is quiet old and many of us already know about this scam, could you please try something new" the call disconnected abruptly.

Yes off late your Phone is going to get disconnected call from IVR lady is also becoming common.

These guys are on a roll today, I guess. I got the call from "DHL" at 2.35 pm from +919897609163.

I strung him along till he asked me whether I want to file an Online complaint or offline cyber police complaint. I said offline. He told that I have to come to Mumbai to file the complaint. I said why not . He asked whether I knew where to go in Mumbai to file the complaint. I said "Yes, just last week I did it for a FedEx parcel". Call disconnected

I have reported the incident at DOT portal here. Others also please do so.

I received a similar call, purportedly from telecom department stating disconnection of my line.

I replied him that I was about to call the department to disconnect my line and I am very glad that he called. I thanked him profusely and requested him to come home ASAP and take away all the wires too.

15 Seconds of silence and call disconnected
